New Zealand is a wonderful holiday playground for the whole family – as we were about to find out. Our first stop on the country’s North island was the stunning Hawkes Bay region and the lovely town of Napier. This rather funky city was destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1931 and totally rebuilt in the unique art deco style of the 1920’s and 30’s. Nearby attractions included the National Aquarium of New Zealand, an apple orchard and the Amazing Maze 'n Maize

Napier Top 5 activities
Napier is located on the east coast of the northern island of New Zealand in Hawke’s Bay. It has its own micro climate with plenty of sunshine hours. Apart from the many vineyards you can visit, these are 5 of the top recommendations:
1. Art deco – As Napier is referred to as the Art Deco capital of the World, it is well worth having a look at the special architecture and decoration of the buildings in this spectacular city. The city was completely rebuilt after the earthquake in the 1930s, in Art deco style! Stay in style: goo.gl/J9da9F
2. Bluff Hill Lookout – this lookout is easily reached, either by foot or by car. You can enjoy extensive views over Hawkes Bay and Napier’s port. Sleep on the hillside: goo.gl/rf2mDM
3. National Aquarium – Located at the Napier Promenade, here you will find a variety of aquatic animals, both native and from around the world. Best place to stay: goo.gl/l2WUyf
4. Te Mata peak – take one of the many walking tracks up Te Mata peak for astonishing 360 degree views over Hawkes Bay. Cheapest option to stay: goo.gl/iHHP9U
5. Ocean spa – watching sunrise from the warm waters of the ocean spa. Sit back and relax in the spa and enjoy spectacular sunrise from the sea.
Or go for a sunrise from you apartment: goo.gl/2cFKKB

Nature crafted New Zealand with the surreal beauty of a movie set. Few destinations boast so many staggering natural wonders packed into such a small area. Snow-capped peaks, sparkling coves, coastal glaciers, rainforests, fjords, and fish-filled rivers are some of the treasures travelers can explore. In Rotorua, one of the world's largest geothermal areas, visitors can witness the powerful forces that birthed these landscapes in the bubbling mud ponds and hissing springs.

City Description:
Napier, a coastal city on New Zealand's North Island, is set amid the renowned wine-producing region of Hawke's Bay. Rebuilt after a 1931 earthquake, the city is known for art deco landmarks like the zigzag-patterned Daily Telegraph Building. Along the tree-lined waterfront promenade the Marine Parade, the Pania of the Reef statue depicting a Maori maiden, is a symbol of the city.Other bayfront attractions include MTG Hawke's Bay, a complex encompassing a performing-arts theatre, art gallery and a museum with exhibits on local Maori heritage and the 1931 earthquake. At the National Aquarium, sea life encounters include swimming with sharks. South of Napier, 399m-high Te Mata Peak offers hiking trails and panoramic views. To the east is Cape Kidnappers headland, which shelters massive Gannet seabirds. The city of Taradale is home to many of the region’s most venerable vineyards, which produce popular red varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon.
Weather and Events:
Peak travel to the city, and nearby wineries and hiking trails, is Dec–Apr, when temperatures are generally mild. The temperate maritime climate also makes for mild winters (Jun–Aug). The Tremains Art Deco Weekend (Feb) celebrates the city's architectural heritage with 1920s- and 1930s-themed events. The Food and Wine Classic Hawke's Bay is a series of culinary events centred on Hawke's Bay's famous wines, staged in both summer (Nov) and winter (Jun).
