Kungsleden Trek Part 2 Video Details
This is one of the STF camps that are located a day apart (around 9 to 22km) along most of the trail.
The trail is separated in four portions which each represent approximately one week of hiking.
The camps are also open in winter for cross-country skiers.
Femke will be hiking most of the trail and is using the cabins for simplicity and comfort. They provide dorm beds, blankets, kitchens & shops selling supplies. And most even include a sauna.
The Sami are the indigenous people inhabiting the Arctic Circle. One of their best-known means of livelihood is semi-nomadic reindeer herding. About 10% of the Sami are connected to reindeer herding, providing them with meat, fur, and transportation. Due to the heat and mosquitoes the reindeer preferred to stay high up on snowfields.
Our objective was the highest pass on the trail.
This is a fairly easy trek physically. It is mostly gently rolling valleys and it can be very comfortable if you use the cabins for food and shelter. But don’t expect hot water.
Yet it can also rain for a week at a time in the summer in which case a tent is not the most desired option.
At this stage we parted company. Femke will continue trekking south for a few more weeks while I cut east to Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in Sweden.
The route I am taking is called the Fjallraven Classic route, totaling 110 kms or 6-7 days.
Fishing for dinner is an option. While, mosquito repellent is not optional on this trek. Comfortable waterproof high top hiking boots are also a must have.
Kebnekaise camp is a very popular location because it is close to the eastern trailhead, a rail connection and easy transportation in and out.
Södra Kungsleden
I thru-hiked the Södra Kungsleden trail (known also as Southern Kungsleden) in June 2016, it took me 18 days to complete the 350 km walk, although I think it was more like 380. A walked from south to north, starting in Sälen and finishing in Storlien. In Drevfjällen I took the western route, which I would highly recomend. The trail is mostly well marked and there are lots of day trip huts. The landscape is diverse, from pine forests in the south to alpine tundra in the north. After finishing I walked Blommarstigen and walked to Norwegian Border, where I could see some rock carvings at Storvallen. There is a trip report (in polish):
Travel Norway Like A Local in Hattfjelldal, Helgeland
In March I spent three days exploring Hattfjelldal in inner Helgeland, husky sledding with Aaslid Polar, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and spending the night at Furuheim Farm and Saeterstad Farm. It was such a great way to travel Norway like a local!

Kungsleden | Sweden
Lapland’s nature is incredible!
Although the mountains are not the highest, but:
- this is the least populated region of Europe (1 people / km.qv.), land of Sami people (the indigenous people of the north of Scandinavia);
- 300 km north from the Arctic Circle;
- The Scandinavian Mountains are one of the oldest in the world, over half a billion years old (The Carpathians, for example, have only 60 million). They are the remnants of the once greatest mountains of the world - Caledonian. Half a billion years old!
The video was shot on drone DJI Spark.
