Walpole offers a wide array of recreational and leisure activities for residents and visitors alike. The Connecticut and Cold Rivers feature excellent fishing, while an extensive and well maintained snowmobile trail system winds through Walpole and the surrounding region. Several major ski areas are just a short drive from the Walpole area, including Ascutney, Bromley, Stratton, Okemo, Killington and Sunapee.

Walpole has a town recreation area with a swimming pool, tennis and basketball courts and a jogging track. In the summertime there are band concerts on the Village Green, which has changed little in over a century. Walpole is hardly alone among area towns in sponsoring a wide variety of community activities. BENNINGTON BATTLE MONUMENT IN VERMONTS ALMOST 400 FEET HIGH
The tallest structure in Vermont commemorates the Battle of Bennington,
a battle that lead to the turning point in the Revolutionary War.
Soaring more than 300 feet above the lovely streets of Old Bennington, a striking stone monument marks the site of a critical military supply depot.

In the late summer of 1777, the Continental Army beat a hasty retreat toward Bennington. British and Hessians pursued, but were badly in need of supplies.

The Americans, carrying what is believed to be the first American flag into battle, defeated them before they could reach the supply depot at Bennington.

The British were forced to proceed to Saratoga without the supplies, where they met a stunning defeat that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War.

Today, visitors may ride an elevator to the top of the Bennington Monument for panoramic views of the valleys and rolling hills of Vermont, Massachusetts and New York.

The New Hampshire Grants in particular now abounds in the most active and rebellious race on the continent and hangs like a gathering storm on my left.
