The emergency water diversion works to relieve villagers of prolonged drought was completed in Xiadaqing Village, Malu Township, Huize County, Qujing City of Southwest China's Yunnan Province on Thursday.
Qujing is one of the nine cities/prefectures in the province worst hit by the drought. Xiadaqing villagers, who live on a mountain slope, have been relying on self-built cellars to catch rains for water consumption, but the lasting drought dried out their water cellars early this year. For weeks they had to trek hours across mountains to fetch water from the nearest river.
The newly built pipeline channeled water to the village on Thursday. The whole village turned out to celebrate the occasion, for it was the first time ever that water was immediately available in their homes. A big red flower was tied onto the pipeline.
Fellow villagers, water is finally made available to us today, announced Zhang Zhijie, Party secretary of the village.
The Niulan River is the nearest source of water for the villagers. Though it is only 800 meters away in a crow-flight path, the villagers have to spend hours climbing over the rocky mountains. Now the pipeline channels water from the Niulan River right into their cellars.
The water in the cellar can sustain about a year for my family, said Zhang Guixiu, a Xiadaqing villager. With water available now I'd raise more pigs and grow more crops.
Yet a few families living at the highest of the mountain slope still need to walk for an hour double way to fetch water from their nearest neighbor who has a water cellar. But it's nothing compared with the trip to the river, they said. Childless elder villagers and disabled people enjoy the privilege of having water delivered to their homes by village cadres.
Pan Zhiyan, a college graduate serving as a village cadre in Xiadaqing, is one of the volunteer water deliverers. She and ten other local cadres temporarily assigned to work in this village took it as their daily task to carry water to families in need. It takes her 20 minutes to cover the mountain path and carry water to Granny Li Guixiu's home.
They always come to fill up my water vat. I'm very grateful to them. They have made three trips today, said Li.
The State Development and Reform Commission earmarked 29 million yuan to solve the problem of water supplies for villagers, and the construction of a reservoir for Xiadaqing Village has been planned. Preliminary work for the construction is under way.
The reservoir project will break ground in October 2012, and be completed within two years. It will send tap-water to every household in Xiadaqing Village, according to Qian Hu, Party secretary of the Malu Township of Huize County.
