Otavalo, capital of Otavalo Canton, has a population largely made up of the Otavalo indigenous group. It is located in Imbabura Province of Ecuador. It is surrounded by the peaks of Imbabura (4,630 metres (15,190 ft)), Cotacachi (4,995 metres (16,388 ft)), and Mojanda volcanoes.
The indigenous Otavalo people are famous for weaving textiles, usually made of wool, which are sold at the famous Saturday market. Although the largest market is on Saturday, there is a very wide range of wares available throughout the week in the Plaza de los Ponchos, and the many local shops. The shops sell textiles such as handmade blankets, tablecloths, and much more.
During the market's peak, almost one third of the town becomes full of stalls selling textiles, tagua nut jewelry, musical instruments, dream catchers, leather goods, fake shrunken heads, indigenous costumes, hand-painted platters and trays, purses, clothing, spices, raw foods and spools of wool.
As Otavalo is famous for its textiles, many of the nearby villages and towns are famous for their own particular crafts. Cotacachi, for example, is the center of Ecuador's leather industry. In San Antonio, where the local specialty is wood carving, the main street prominently displays carved statues, picture frames, and furniture.

Otavalo, Imbabura Province of Ecuador (A Day in Life)
Otavalo is made up principally of farming communities due to the rich volcanic soils in this area. Only 2 hours by bus from Quito but offers a rural tranquility and connection to the land very different from life in the capital. The father and mother volcanoes, Imbabura and Cotacachi, stand guard over the valleys and hills where indigenous Otaveleño and mestizo families grow their sustenance. Diverse in their customs, these villagers are united by their need to work together to accomplish improvements for their communities. They farm corn, potatoes, beans, and other crops, weave textiles and baskets, and commute to Otavalo for secondary education or formal-sector jobs. The Otavaleño are one of Ecuador's indigenous groups most successful at preserving their cultural identity and traditions. Speaking both Kichwa and Spanish, they have learned to negotiate the power structures of their nation while retaining a sense of indigenousness.

Starting with the Hacienda Zuleta and the colorful market of Otavalo I explore the Imbabura Province where I also get to hike part of the trail running along the picturesque crater lake of Cuicocha.
One of the most popular things to do is visiting the actualy equator aka Mitad del Mundo - here I decided to go to the lesser known monument of the Inca Sundial near Cayambe.
Finishing with some hiking at the Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve and the hot springs at the Termas de Papallacta I leave Ecuador with loads of cool memories!

Cotapaxi is a must when you're there and is easy if you manage to land yourself your own car, fear not if you can't as taxis can be rented to take you all the way up.

Day trip to Otavalo Market also known as Otavalo indigenous market, Cuicocha Lake and Peguche Waterfall, in Ecuador 2016.
Viaje al mercado de Otavalo, Lago de Cuicocha y Cascada de Peguche
La ciudad de Otavalo esta situado en la provincia de imbabura a una hora y media al norte de la ciudad de Quito, aqui encontraras, artesanias, cultura, folklore, en otavalo y sus alrededores, tambien se puede visitar la cascada de Peguche que se encuentra a unos 10 minutos aproximadamente de otavalo, y la caminata a la cascada es muy corta y rodeada de naturaleza, tambien visitamos el crater y lago Cuicocha, que es un lugar para visitar muy vistoso, con la opcion de realizr la caminata alrededor del lago de aproximadamente 4 horas o la visita al medio de la laguna, donde se puede observar el crater aun en actividad emanando burbujas de gas.
The city of Otavalo is located in the province of Imbabura an hour and a half north of the city of Quito, here you will find crafts, culture, folklore, in otavalo and its surroundings, you can also visit the Peguche waterfall which is about 10 Approximately minutes from Otavalo, and the walk to the waterfall is very short and surrounded by nature, we also visited the crater and Lake Cuicocha, which is a very attractive place to visit, with the option of realizing the walk around the lake of approximately 4 hours Or visit to the middle of the lagoon, where you can see the crater still in activity emanating gas bubbles.

Day4 (Otavalo Crafts Market) - Otavaleños on 10 Day Ecuador & Amazon Adventure (May 2014)
By 9AM on Sunday morning (May 25, 2014), we reached the city of OTAVALO - a feast of riches for the shopper, crafts as far as the eye can see.
We arrived exactly when the local CRAFTS MARKET opened, so plenty of shopping opportunities for the next 2 hours!
The crafts market's epicenter is the Plaza de los Ponchos in downtown Otavalo.
The locals expect you to haggle and they are good at it.
The breadth of merchandise and abundance of choices make Otavalo the most renowned indigenous market in all of South America and a must-see on the itineraries of tourists who travel to Ecuador.
Situated in the Andean highlands of Ecuador's Imbabura province about fifty (50) miles northeast of Quito, Otavalo proper is home to about half of the valley's 50,000 residents.
Weaving and the tourism it produces are big business here, employing much of the population in various capacities, at least part time, in the making or selling of camelid fleece products.
Though the biggest market day is Saturday, any day in Otavalo is a treat for tourists seeking souvenirs of their travel to Ecuador.
Sales get going between 8 AM and 9 AM, winding down about 3 PM.
Crowds are smallest before mid-morning.
Prices for most merchandise are not fixed, allowing shoppers to negotiate with the artisans.
The Otavalo market is best known for its Andean knits, selling unique sweaters, scarves and mittens as well as tapestries with a multitude of designs including Inca themes, depictions of village life, geometric patterns, flora and fauna, and carpets to match the color scheme of any room.
Otavalo is NOT just about weaving. Visitors will also find wood and stone carvings, puppets and hand-made dolls for the kids, Andean musical instruments, colorful pottery decorated with a variety of patterns and Andean scenes, paintings (large and small), and jewelry for all occasions.
Should one get tired of the market itself, Otavalo is filled with art galleries, and many private homes contain craft workshops.
