Isola delle Femmine
Palermo
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea with rich and colourful history that can be seen in places like Valley of the Temples, Syracuse, Taormina and many other historic sites all over the island.
On the east coast of the island, between the cities of Catania and Messina there’s the highest active volcano in Europe – Mount Etna - with current height just above 3.300 m or 10.900 ft. And at the time of filming, active it is! Fortunately, there is only prominent white smoke coming out of, but it stretches over the horizon and can be seen from most parts of the island.
It's also world famous for their food and cuisine. That delicious Cannoli original comes from Sicily.
There is about 5 million people living in Sicily, with Palermo being the capital and the largest city with just below 700.000 inhabitants, followed by Catania, Messina and Syracuse.
Palermo is also a home to the largest opera house in Italy and third largest in Europe, Teatro Massimo. It might not be as famous as Milan’s La Scala, but it’s absolutely charming. And big.
The distance between Sicily and mainland Italy is only 2,5 km or 1,5 miles close to the city of Messina. There has been much discussion about connecting the two together with a bridge, but for now, there are regular ferries connecting both together. They are quite fast and not that expensive. Or even better, just fly here!

Places to see in ( Palermo - Italy ) Riserva Naturale Orientata Di Capo Gallo
The Capo Gallo nature reserve is a regional nature reserve in Sicily , established on 21 June 2001 . It is included in the Regional Plan of Parks and Reserves and is managed by the State Forests Company of the Sicilian Region, which has made numerous interventions aimed at recreating the original environmental conditions of the territory and making it accessible to the public.
The manager has proceeded to the arrangement of pre-existing paths, to the creation of fences, walls, fences, the cleaning of the undergrowth and, subsequently, a periodic maintenance to give visitors the opportunity to fully enjoy the beauty of the place while fully respecting the environment.
The reserve includes an area of almost 586 hectares and consists essentially of Monte Gallo, a carbonate massif, formed tens of millions of years ago between the Mesozoic period and the Middle Eocene . The Monte Gallo ends in a promontory , called Capo Gallo, on which there is a lighthouse that indicates its position. The promontory is located in the north-western area of Palermo and separates the two gulfs of Mondello and Sferracavallo , which host the homonymous seaside districts of the city. Capo Gallo is part of the municipal territory of Palermo which, since 1996 has already had the Monte Pellegrino Reserve, can boast the singular record of owning two natural reserves within its borders.
The coastal side of the Reserve of Capo Gallo extends from the homonymous cape to the west to Punta Barcarello and, given the karst nature of the rocks, the sea has shaped them in the most bizarre forms, forming a series of fascinating caves, like the Grotta dell ' oil that is reminiscent of the famous blue Grotta di Capri . In ancient times these caves were inhabited by man and in some of them prehistoric graffiti and other archaeological finds of considerable importance have been found .
To access a large part of the reserve it is necessary the marine landing , since the terrestrial connections that start from the two seaside villages do not meet. For this reason naturism is often practiced at the central point of the reserve . The easiest places to reach are often crowded in the summer season due to the proximity to the sea and the reserve is placed under the supervision of the park's naturalistic guards that control the respect of the regulations by tourists and swimmers.
The stretch of sea that connects Capo Gallo with the nearby Isola delle Femmine has been declared a marine reserve . More precisely, the protected natural marine area Capo Gallo - Isola delle Femmine (this is the correct denomination), established by decree of the Ministry of the Environment of 24 July 2002 , has an area of 2,173 hectares and its management is entrusted to the created consortium between the Municipalities of Palermo and that of Isola delle Femmine.

Places to see in ( Palermo - Italy ) Mondello beach
Places to see in ( Palermo - Italy ) Mondello beach
Mondello is a small borough of the city of Palermo in the autonomous region of Sicily in Southern Italy. Its beach lies between two cliffs called Mount Gallo and Mount Pellegrino. The town was originally a small fishing village situated on marshland, but at the end of the 19th century it grew into a favourite tourist destination. The numerous Liberty style villas on the seafront promenade made it one of the gems of Art Nouveau in Europe.
Until the beginning of the 20th century, Mondello was an unhealthy marsh enclosed by two headlands: the famous Mount Pellegrino described by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as the most beautiful promontory in the world and Mount Gallo. The ancient fishing village laid at the foot of the latter. It was also home to a tonnara (or almadraba), one of the many ones scattered along the West coast of Sicily. The tonnara is no longer active.
At some point, a Palermitan nobleman had the idea to drain the swamp. Prince Francesco Lanza di Scalea, with the help of a Belgian real estate company, built a plant for the drainage of swampy waters to the sea. The newly rehabilitated areas, previously occupied by the swamp, underwent a process of expansion and evolution from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
From 1912 onwards Mondello became the seat of the high bourgeoisie and the aristocracy. The nobility of the city fostered the construction of several exclusive and aristocratic circles, the construction of villas and the exploitation of lush gardens and natural beauty. King Ferdinand of Bourbon called it a corner of paradise. Eventually, the beach of Mondello was born.
Mondello is characterized by a sandy bay of tropical colors that binds the two promontories, called Monte Gallo and Mount Pellegrino, with a coastline of white sand that nowadays is little more than 1.5 kilometers long. The landscape is influenced by the Natural Reserve of Capo Gallo and the reserve of Monte Pellegrino. Today the area is famous for its beach, which is one of the most coveted shores of Italy, for its many Art Nouveau villas and for sites of historical interest.
The Art Nouveau villas characterize the architecture of the place, making it an important landmark in the history of international modernism . These buildings (many by the famous architect Ernesto Basile) are among the best examples of Art Nouveau in Italy and Europe.
Mondello has many accommodations, numerous yacht clubs and exclusive clubs, restaurants, shops, a marina and an old bathhouse, the Antico Stabilimento Balneare, one of the landmarks of the city. It is home of the World Festival on the Beach.

It is on the borderline with the Metropolitan City of Palermo at a distance of about 50 kilometres from Palermo and Trapani. Nowadays the town territory includes an area of 130.79 square kilometres and is the second municipality as for population density in the province of Trapani, after Erice.
Alcamo is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the north, Balestrate and Partinico on the east, Camporeale on the south and Calatafimi-Segesta and Castellammare del Golfo on the west. Alcamo is situated in the middle of the Gulf of Castellammare, at 258 metres above the sea level and at the foot of Mount Bonifato, a calcareous complex 825 metres high. At the altitude of 500 metres (near the Funtanazza) there is the Nature Reserve of Monte Bonifato. The territory of Alcamo includes also Alcamo Marina, mainly used as a summer resort.

Among the areas of naturalistic interest near Alcamo there are the beaches of Alcamo Marina, the Nature Reserve Bosco di Alcamo on Mount Bonifato and the Segestan thermal baths. The hot springs are produced by the reclimbing of water of meteoric origin which meets the water of Fiume Caldo. They are seven kilometres far from Alcamo and next to the boundary with the territory of Castellammare del Golfo, a small town which shares this naturalistic attraction with Alcamo. According to the narration given by Diodorus Siculus, they were created by the nymphs to favour Eracle's rest during his trip from Piloro to Erice.
The surrounding areas include interesting touristic and historical locations like Segesta and Gibellina. The old fishing village of Scopello, 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Alcamo, has been referred to as having a remarkable seaside. Another small town considered worth visiting is Castellammare del Golfo which is between these two places.
