Ivaylovgrad is a town in Haskovo Province in the very south-east of Bulgaria set near the river Arda in the easternmost part of the Rhodope Mountains. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Ivaylovgrad Municipality. As of December 2009, the town has a population of 3,756 inhabitants.Byzantine eparchial lists from the time of the 9th-10th century mention a bishop's centre by the name of Lyutitsa on the site of present-day Ivaylovgrad. According to John VI Kantakouzenos , his infantry reached the fortress in 1342–1343. The settlement was destroyed by the Ottoman Turks during their invasion of the Balkans in the 14th-15th century. The Aleksandrovo tomb is a Thracian burial mound and tomb excavated near Aleksandrovo, Haskovo Province, South-Eastern Bulgaria, dated to c. 4th century BCE. On December 17, 2000 the tomb was accidentally uncovered by an earth-moving machine. Looters subsequently entered the tomb, damaging some of its frescoes. In 2001 Bulgarian archaeologist Georgi Kitov led a rescue excavation of the tomb, discovering a round chamber of about 3 meters in diameter, accessible through a small antechamber and a tunnel, approximately 6 meters long. Both the antechamber and main chamber are decorated with well-preserved frescoes that reflect the artist's knowledge of Late Classical and Early Hellenistic art. Here we have one more monster day in Bulgaria to Ivaylovgrad in Eastern Bulgaria, tackling yet more huge hills and finding more remote villages and towns. Definitely one of the toughest days, given the wind and cold too. The next day proves to be a whole different world as we enter Greece, and of course the sun comes back out after a few weeks of pretty much winter. After just a few hours, we approach the Turkey border and continue into beautiful Edirne....

Ivaylovgrad - Hotel Armira - 6/10. did the job. Spacious and around 20Euro with en suite. Locked bikes in outside around the side of the hotel.

Greece - just cycled through to Turkey

Edirne - Hotel Edrin - 9/10. One of the best apartment style hotels we've seen. Clean, cheap, amazing breakfast included. approx. 20Euro. Great location to walk everywhere in the city. Locked our bikes in the stairwell.

Light Castle Best Bulgarian Winery

Light Castle Winery is located in the best region for red wines in Bulgaria - the region of Ivajlovgrad. The winery focuses only to produce high quality red wines, that feature an unique combination of intense aroma, powerful body and the authentic taste of the real red wines of the old days.

Production process is very natural, no conservation of the wines is permitted. They are bottled using traditional methods leaving the wine as natural as possible. The wine is made from grapes grown exclusivelly on our own vineyards, where the vine grapes are hand-picked and cut.

The winery has more than 60 ha of own vineyrads some of them have been created in the former borderline area between Bulgaria and Greece - in a ecologically preserved nature, absent from any industrial or agricultural activities for the last 50 years. No heavy chemical intervention on the vines is allowed, no pesticides is reduced to minimum, the most of the work on the vines is done using manual labor. And the vineyards are in process of certification for a bio product.

The grape varieties of our vineyards feature: 2 different clones of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which were specially selected for the terroir of the area. In 2006 we planted other suitable varieties for the region such as Sangiovese, Pinot Noar, Temprannio, Angelotta and others.
