Quito, the capital of Ecuador, sits high in the Andes and straddles the equator, making it the closest national capital to the sun.
San Francisco de Quito, as this harmonious city is officially called, is all about balance. Its World Heritage protected Old Town is contrasted by its progressive New Town.
The New Town, or La Mariscal, is centered on the bustling Plaza del Quinde and has markets, trendy cafés and nightlife.
The Plaza de la Independencia is the Civic heart of Old Town, is overlooked by the Municipal Palace, Archbishop’s Palace and Presidential Palace.
Quito has a wealth of ornate churches, including the Santo Domingo Church, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Basilica de la Merced, de San Francisco Church, the Church of the Society of Jesus and the Basilica of the National Vow.
There are two hills that are worth exploring: Panecillo Hill is famous for its winged statue known as the “Virgin of Quito.” Itchimbia Park has a contemporary
Cultural Center and panoramic city views.
The nearby Pichincha Volcano was once the setting of a historic battle that resulted in Quito’s liberation from Spain. But it’s the Cotopaxi Volcano, that is the Quito’s most famous landmark.While in the area, you can’t miss the Mitad del Mundo Monument and the Intiñan Solar Museum where you walk the line of the equator and be in two hemispheres at the same time.

Bolivia, a landlocked South American country, holds the promise of discovery for adventurous souls. While pretty Sucre, “La Ciudad Blanca,” is Bolivia’s judicial capital, La Paz is its political capital and also its main tourist hub.
On the Mirador at Laikacota, you get a feel for how incredibly high up in the Andes this city sits. Deep in the valley below lies the central Plaza Murillo, home to the most precious buildings: the Presidential Palace, National Congress and Metropolitan Cathedral. Most visitors stay near the Plaza San Francisco, because of its proximity to hidden gems, such as the curious Witches’ Market, the Musical Instrument Museum and the Coca Museum.
Around La Paz, you can ride down “El Camino de la Muerte, hike through the lunar landscape of Valle de la Luna and great the alpacas that road around the Tiwanaku Cultural Heritage Site.
Bolivia is a diamond in the rough. It’s relatively poor and undeveloped, but its extremely authentic, colorful and cultural. Bolivia’s riches shine through in the country’s high altiplanos, its floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca, the silver mines of Potosi, the infinite salt flats of the Salar de Uyuni and the untamed tropical lowlands in the vast Amazon basin.

If you're planning to walk the Inca Trail or visit Machu Picchu, you'll likely end up spending at least a few days in Cuzco. With it's lively square, quirky museums, artisans markets and traditional performances, this is exactly the type of destination you'll want to linger in...plus let's not forget, it's also a good place to adjust to the altitude! Cuzco Cathedral is a place you shouldn't miss. The cathedral sits on the site of Viracocha Inca’s palace, and it was also built using blocks from the nearby Inca site of Sacsaywamán. Inside you'll find impressive works of art done in the cuzqueña style.
In the evenings, you can go watch a traditional dance performance at Centro Qosqo.
San Blas
San Blas is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Cuzco and it is a great area to explore on foot. The neighbourhood is known for its bright blue doors and window shutters, and it has a nice little square with a church and a water fountain. The neighbourhood has some really cool lookout points with great panoramic views of Cuzco, so you'll want to bring your camera.
Plaza de Armas is the beating heart of Cuzco. The square is flanked by a Jesuit church and cathedral, and there are also plenty of bars, restaurants, and tour agencies around the perimeter. During the day you'll find locals and tourists hanging out in the square, and if you get lucky, you might just encounter a performance followed by a demonstration like we did.
The Inca Museum is one of the main museums in town and it has rooms dedicated to different periods of Inca and Spanish history. You can also see women weaving rugs and tapestries by hand in the central courtyard.
Qurikancha was an Inca temple built to the Sun God, Inti, and it is believed that the walls of this temple were once covered in sheets of gold. If the temple looks like it has various layers of construction, that's because when the Spaniards arrived, they demolished the original temple and used the foundations to build the Church of Santo Domingo on the site.
The Church of the Society of Jesus is a historic Jesuit church. It's worth a quick visit if you're in the area.
Templo de la Merced is another church located one block from Plaza de Armas, and it contains the tomb of two famous conquistadors.

Takanakuy: Fistfighting in the Andes
Once a year around Christmas in the Peruvian Andes, the whole town gets together to dance, drink and beat the hell out of each other.
Christmas festivities vary widely around the world, and are widely a steaming crock of boring shit. Ooh, Swedish girls wear a crown of candles the night before Chistmas? Please tell me more about this scintillating national cust-snzzzZZZZZZZZZ.
In the Peruvian Andes, folks know how to celebrate the season right. What they do is, they put on a colorful ski-mask, dress up like Mad Max mountain bikers, tie a dead eagle to their heads, and get drunk and dance for about a week straight. Then, come Christmas morning, they all gather together in the middle of town and beat the baby bejesus out of each other. Now we're talking, right?
The festival is called Takanakuy and its equal parts sporting event, indigenous display of hypermasculine defiance in the face of all the lilywhite metropolitan sissies in Lima, and makeshift judicial system. The province of Chumbivilcas, where Takanakuy takes place, has about three cops total and is a stomach-wrecking 10-hour drive through the mountains to the nearest courthouse. So if you've got a beef with a neighbor or someone's taken your girl or sheep, you don't go crying about it to some judge. You bury it away until Christmas, then get yourself all beered up and exact some Andean justice with your fists and feet. Guys, girls, little kids, old drunk men in high-waisted pants; everybody in town fights at Takanakuy.
This year we decided to forego the annual family snoozefest and head into the mountains of Peru to test our mettle against the some of the hardiest people from one of the harshest environments in the Americas. We hope you like it, since it broke our mothers' hearts.

In this episode we give you the guided tour of Hostel Azul, which is the awesome hostel that we stayed in whilst visiting Granada.
We also visited the Masaya Volcano, located near Granada and was our first ever experience of seeing actual lava.
We had a wonderful time visiting the town of Granada on our backpacking tour of Nicaragua and Central America and if you are travelling through Nicaragua you should take the time to visit.
