Best Places to Visit in Uruguay
Best Places to Visit in Uruguay
Bordered by Argentina and Brazil, the tiny country of Uruguay is often overlooked by those heading to its bigger neighbors. Uruguay is a country you cannot afford to skip from your Latin America itinerary. It has so much to offer, whether it’s surfing beaches, good wine, stunning scenery, delicious steaks and of course marijuana.
Cross its borders and the reward will be endless delights, from glamorous coastline to ranch-peppered interiors where wild lands, gaucho culture, and local folklore lives on. It was one of the first on the continent to allow gay marriages, legalise abortions in 2012 and established a welfare state in 1903.
And of course, the marijuana which it’s so famous for since December 2013, Uruguay legalised the cultivation, sale, and consumption of marijuana for recreational use.

--- Things to do in Montevideo ---
1) Ciudad Vieja
In the video I mentioned a free tour which takes place every friday to discover the old town. Anyway you can also do it on your own! The tourism office next to the town hall provides free maps with all POI and all sights are in walking distance close to each other.
2) City from above
At the tourism office you’re also able to get a free ticket for the terrace at the top of the town hall. Take the elevator and enjoy a great view over Montevideo!
3) Discover the architecture on a walk
You can find an interesting mix of architectural styles in Montevideo – discover them by walking around the innercity, where you’ll also stumble upon nice pieces of Streetart.
4) La Rambla de Montevideo
One of the best things about this city is the promenade along the river. You can find some nice spots along the 22km long “Rambla” to relax or for doing some workout.5
5) Chivito
Food should alway be part of a travel experience. Apart from BBQ/Asado like in the other countries around you can find a sandwich called “Chivito” – it’s the Deal in Uruguay and -of course- it comes with meat ;)

But walk inside and it quickly becomes clear: Estancia Vik is not your average farmhouse. Estancia Vik also includes ample equestrian activities including polo lessons on its world-renowned polo field. Bahia Vik is a luxury boutique hotel set on 10 acres of beach dunes on the Jose Ignacio peninsula. The hotel offers 10 suites in the main building as well as private bungalows scattered through the grounds. Each room is decorated in a unique style and a range of contemporary Uruguayan and international artists contributed works to complete the stylish and eclectic décor. Come To Life South America, Ep.2
The adventure continues! In Come To Life South America, Ep.2, Guayakí cebadores, Cyrus Sutton and Madison Olson, visit the beaches of Uruguay. The locals love to surf and play football on the beach. It seemed as though EVERYONE we saw was drinking mate! Uruguayans love their mate and drink it all throughout the day, going nowhere without their beloved brew. Needless to say, us mate loving surfers fit right in and Jose Ignacio became one of our favorite destinations along our South America trip.
