THE RACK RAILWAY, A UNIQUE TRAIN !
The rack railway from Diakofto to Kalavryta, ''Odontotos'' in Greek, is one of the few rack trains in the world and a unique attraction for Greece: it was so named in Greek after the mechanism that such trains use in order to climb safely on steep slopes. For the longest part of the journey the train moves on conventional rails, yet, when the degree of slop exceeds 10% it moves on the rack rails, using suitable rack gears. The train crosses scenic areas of significant natural beauty and covers the 22 km journey at a speed of 30 to 40 km/h on conventional rail and 6 to 15 km/h on the rack rails.
A WONDERFUL JOURNEY
The rack railway connects Diakofto with Kalavryta, crossing one of the most beautiful scenries in Greece. Departing from the shores of the Corinthian golf, it crosses the Vouraikos Gorge, which forms
small and larger waterfalls. The train stops at Niamata, Triklia, and Kato Zachlorou, the latter being a convenient stop for visitors of the Mega Spilaion Monastery. From that point the trip continues for another 18 Klm, with a stop at the village of Kerpini before it reaches Kalavryta, its final destination.
Kalavryta and its greater area are a fascinating destination all year round, with noumerous villages with friendly inhabitants, unique landscapes, a rich history and important monuments like the Aghia Lavra Monastery where the Greek Revolution of 1821 began, as well as the site of the Holocaust of 1943, during the German occuration. Kalavryta is famous for its ski center, one of the largest in Greece and is also one of the few places in the world combining mountain skiing with swimming being very near to the sea at Diakofto.

Cycling in Greece Episode 7 - Kalavrita to Olympia
Episode 7 of my bike tour in Greece. My cycling route in Greece was based on places mentioned in the legend of Hercules and the 12 Labours.
On day 7 of my Hercules Bike Tour around the Peloponnese, I cycled from Kalavrita to Olympia.
This was always going to be a tough day - over 100kms with 1200 metres of total ascent. It was also going to always be a very scenic one!
In this bike touring vlog, I share with you some video taken whilst cycling in the Peloponnese, showing the mountains and landscape, as well as the occasional goat.
I also talk a little about how I strategically designed my lifestyle so that I can be location independent when it comes to working. This enables me to travel a lot more than if I had a 9-5 job, meaning that I can do more of the things I love - such as cycling up mountains in Greece!

The monastery is located ten kilometers northeast of Kalavrita on the road that connects the national road Patras - Athens with Kalavrita and is built in the opening of a large natural cave (from which it is named) of the Helmos mountain range above the steep gorge of the Vouraikos River, at an altitude of 899 meters. The whole of the Monastery, dug into the rock, is a cruciform temple, engraved with two splints. The main temple has wall-paintings of 1653, remarkable marble floors, wood-carved icon screen, etc. while in the narthex frescoes date back to the early 19th century.
The monastery, which is considered the oldest in Greece, was built in 362 AD. by the brothers from Thessaloniki, Simeon and Theodore. While the two brothers were in Jerusalem, they each saw a distinction, with the command to go to Achaia and find the Holy Virgin image of mastic and candle, crafted by the Evangelist Lucas. After successive wandering and revealing dreams, in 362 AD, they met here with maiden Efrosini, shepherd from the village of Galata (Zachlorou). Efrosini led them to the cave where the Sacred Image was.
The Sacred Image, according to tradition, was located next to the spring and was guarded by a terrible dragon who was killed by lightning when he attacked the two monks who were trying to cleanse the holy place from dense vegetation. Then the two monks built a small temple and some small cells with the help of the multitude of believers who flocked to worship the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary.
During the Revolution of 1821 the Monastery was a beacon of Orthodoxy and Hellenism, but also a center of resistance against the conquerors, and although it received many attacks, it was never conquered. The fact that stood out was the rebuff of Ibrahim's assault in June 1827 ...
