Cyprus is the most easterly island in the Mediterranean with a nine thousand year history of colonization. An island of beauty and contrast, a melting pot of multiple influences at the intersection of both Orient and Occident. Lefkosia, or, Nicosia, is the capital, completely surrounded by walls. Famagusta Gate is the entrance to the district of Tacht El-Kala with its many narrow alleys, small buildings and handicraft studios. The Icon Museum and old Orthodox John Cathedral form the frame of the central Macarius Square. The massive construction of the Napa-Ayia Church dominates the old town and the pedestrian zone provides interesting shops, restaurants and street cafes. The city is changing more and more into a modern city. Outside Platanistasa, the Stavros Tou Agiasmati Church stands alone within the wooded mountain scenery. In Orthodox Christianity the figures were meant to depict images of a true archetype of a divine and holy nature, not one created by man. In Lagoudera a large barn roof protects the Panagia Tou Araka Church in which once gathered the first people beyond Palestine and the Holy Land, who discovered the Holy Gospel. Cyprus is an island world with fascinating landscapes and unique historical treasures and a place where summer lasts for ever.

Greening Cyprus Beaches

In 2012 the Travel Foundation embarked on a Greening Cyprus Beaches project with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative. The project aimed to demonstrate what a best practice green beach could look like.

Two beaches were involved in a pilot project: Nissi Beach in Agia Napa and Fig Tree Bay in Protaras.

Due to interest being shown from neighbouring municipalities and beach front businesses, we worked with the CTO to design, develop and circulate a Greening Cyprus Beaches manual.

Following the pilot project, two more beaches -- Yiannathes beach in Oroklini and Polis Chrysochou beach -- are now working towards the Greening Cyprus Beaches criteria outlined in the manual.

In 2016 September I visited Cyprus with my family. The island is not very large, but there are plenty of things to see. You can see in this video all which we could fit into one week. I used my new GoPro HERO4 for the first time, and I have to admit, its 4k image quality is awesome :) Enjoy!
