The BIGGEST THALI in Kaziranga National Park at Orchid Park - 28 ITEMS! | Assam, India

Back in March of 2019, I went on one of the most incredible trips of my life when I spent two weeks in northeast India. I visited the states of Assam and Meghalaya. There, I learned that this region of India is quite unlike other parts of the country. During those two weeks, I fell in love with its unique culture, fascinating history, natural beauty, and incomparable food. I’m so excited to share these adventures with you!
After leaving Tezpur, I arrived at the Wild Grass Resort in Kaziranga National Park. My new friend Honey took me around to see the nearby orchid park and a traditional dance performance before I dove into a massive Assamese veg thali! Come along with me as I explore the area!
I started at the Kaziranga Orchid and Bio-Diversity Park. There are 600 species of orchids, which makes it the biggest collection of orchids in India! They’re from all over northeast India. There are some beautiful and rare varieties!
Next, I saw local tribespeople making traditional clothing on looms using natural dye. I then saw instruments that are used in everyday life. There was even a cool mask on the wall! From there, I took a seat in front of a stage to watch three beautiful traditional dances, including a bamboo dance. All three were mesmerizing!
Afterward, I was given some fresh, sweet orange juice with a little bit of black salt in it. It was so good! Then some of the local women there very kindly gave me a traditional Bodo tribe scarf. I loved the colors in it!
Then we moved on to the Cactus Park, where there are over 300 species of cacti from all over the world, though most are from the state of Sikkim. They also have lots of medicinal plants and others that are used in cooking, including stevia! It tasted sweet but bitter at the same time.
Then I went back to the juice bar to try an apple juice with milk and sugar. It was like thick, heavy apple milk shake. Then we went to the bamboo garden, which has 50 species of bamboo. Bamboo has many uses in this part of India, including making crafts and it’s used in the local cuisine as well.
Then it was time to eat! I tried a snack made of black rice and jaggery that was kind of chocolatey. Then I had a sweet coconut laddu and a banana juice with milk and sugar. It was also like a sweet banana milkshake. Then it was time for the veg thali, which came with 28 items!
I started with the khar, which had a slight sweetness to it. I followed that with some thick but light black lentils that reminded me of a black bean mash. I also loved the yellow dal, which was also light and soupy. Then I tried the delicious brinjal, or eggplant, which was stir-fried with onion. Next were some small potatoes that almost felt like peanuts and a wild, bitter herb that wasn’t my favorite.
Then I tried an elephant apple curry, which was like a strong, bitter apple compote. Then I tried some amazing starfruit, which was my favorite so far! Next was arum leaves, which was like a spinach mash, and a black fish snake chutney, which was like a tasty ceviche.
Then was lady’s finger, which had a flavor and texture similar to eggplant. After that was long beans with peanuts and another bitter herb. Next was a mixed veg with peas, potatoes, tomatoes, and milky gourd. It was more like a gravy than a soup or curry. Then I tried pumpkin leaves with potato and another spinach-like vegetable.
Next was some meaty jackfruit, which almost has the feel of chicken and the consistency of bamboo. Then I tried a spicy dish that was almost like pure mustard. Duck eggs mixed with small tomatoes was next, but it reminded me more of a spinach stir-fry. Next was a leaf chutney and a delicious mint chutney that had a some real heat to it!
Next was the bitter flower, followed by aloo with vegetables and onion, a salsa-like tomato chutney. I followed that with brinjal chutney and banana flower, which was like mashed, pulled vegetables. Then I tried a chili!
The last two items was banana stems, which contained onions and had a nice banana taste to them, and a drumstick vegetable, which was had a super sweet and light curry.
Wow! This was the ultimate veg thali! And best of all, it only cost 160 rupees!
