Drive Historic Lewis & Clark Bridge - Rainier, OR to Longview, WA - Kevin Hunter
SUBSCRIBE HERE!! The Lewis and Clark Bridge is a cantilever bridge that spans the Columbia River between Longview, Washington and Rainier, Oregon. At the time of completion, it had the longest cantilever span in the United States. The bridge was opened on March 29, 1930, as a privately owned bridge named the Longview Bridge.
The bridge was opened on March 29, 1930, as a privately owned bridge named the Longview Bridge. The $5.8 million cost was recovered by tolls, $1.00 for cars and $.10 for pedestrians. At the time it was the longest and highest cantilever bridge in the United States. The state of Washington purchased the bridge in 1947 and the tolls were removed in 1965 after the bridge was paid for. In 1980 the bridge was rededicated as the Lewis and Clark Bridge in honor of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The deck was replaced in 2003–04 at a cost of $29.2 million.
The bridge is 8,288 ft (2.5 km) long with 210 ft (64 m) of vertical clearance. The main span is 1,200 ft (366 m) long and the top of the bridge is 340 ft (104 m) above the river. It was designed by Joseph Strauss, engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge.
In 1982, the bridge was entered on the National Register of Historic Places, as the Longview Bridge.

2012 Flight to the Pacific Northwest -- Leaving Woodland, WA to Astoria, OR and then north
This is the beginning of Day 3 of our adventure. We spent the night at my sister Debi's place just north and west of the Woodland, WA airstrip. Had a good breakfast and now we are off once again. This time heading down to Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean. And then when we got to Astoria, OR we start heading north and follow the Pacific coastline all the way around the most northwesterly point of U.S. land in the lower 48 states.
The weather was again beautiful. Since we've been back we've been told by several folks that have lived in the Seattle area and along the Washington coastline west of the Olympia Range that there are seldom many clear days along the coast. So once again we were blessed with clear skies. I always believed September is the best month for traveling. Weather seems to be calmer than any other month of the year, no matter where I've been, Fiji, Hawaii, South Dakota, Chicago, Wisconsin, and even Minnesota. Go figure.
Some of the most amazing scenery I have ever seen, and possibly ever will see, is along the Pacific coast of Washington state. The steep eroding bluffs, the many islands in all shapes and sizes. Islands with massive arches with waves passing through. And the lighthouses perched on the steep bluffs of these remote islands a mile or more from shore.
I believe we saw scenery few folks will ever have the joy of seeing. We are very lucky.
Newport Oregon Aerial 4K
Newport is a city in Lincoln County, Oregon, United States. It was incorporated in 1882, though the name dates back to the establishment of a post office in 1868. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 9,989, an increase of nearly 5% over its 2000 population; as of 2013, it had an estimated population of 10,117.[5]
Newport is the county seat of Lincoln County.[6] It is also the home of the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Nye Beach, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, and Rogue Ales. In October 1962, wind gusts at Newport reached 138 miles per hour (222 km/h) before the wind gauge stopped working. This occurred during the Columbus Day Windstorm, which the National Weather Service has named one of Oregon's top 10 weather events of the 20th century.

Appointment of John Hayden as Commissioner of the St Louis Metropolitan Police Department
Mayor Lyda Krewson and Director of Public Safety Jimmie Edwards have appointed John Hayden as police commissioner, effective immediately.
Hayden is a 30-year veteran of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. During that span, he has risen through the Department, earning the rank of lieutenant in 1995, captain in 2006, and major in 2015. His most recent position was commander of the Police Deparment’s North Patrol Division. Between 2006 and 2013, he served as commander of the Internal Affairs Division.
“John Hayden has served St. Louis with honor and distinction for 30 years,” Mayor Krewson said. “He has a great track record building trust in the communities in which he’s served. At this very critical time in our City, John will continue that exemplary service as our police chief.”
Hayden, 55, holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Washington University, a master’s degree in management from Fontbonne University, and has earned more than half of the credits required for a law degree from St. Louis University School of Law.
During the interview process, Hayden said he is committed to community policing. His vision is of a Police Department that is accountable to the people of St. Louis, and a department that views citizens as partners working hand-in-hand with officers to combat crime, he said.
“I know how our agency functions from the executive level. I know the importance of ethical decision-making and maintaining the highest level of integrity from the top down,” Hayden said. “Our agency needs to make certain that we are providing culturally-sensitive officers with the training and tactics to ensure their safety as well as the safety of the citizens in our community.”
