Radstock is a town in Somerset, England, 9 miles south west of Bath, and 8 miles north west of Frome. It is within the unitary authority of Bath and North East Somerset and had a population of 5,620 according to the 2011 Census. Since 2011 Radstock has been a town council in its own right.
Radstock has been settled since the Iron Age, and its importance grew after the construction of the Fosse Way, a Roman road. The growth of the town occurred after 1763, when coal was discovered in the area. Large numbers of mines opened during the 19th century including several owned by the Waldegrave family, who had been Lords of the Manor since the English Civil War. Admiral Lord Radstock, brother of George, fourth Earl Waldegrave, took the town's name as his title when created a Baron.
The spoil heap of Writhlington colliery is now the Writhlington Site of Special Scientific Interest, which includes 3,000 tons of Upper Carboniferous spoil from which more than 1,400 insect fossil specimens have been recovered. The complex geology and narrow seams made coal extraction difficult. Tonnage increased throughout the 19th century, reaching a peak around 1901, when there were 79 separate collieries and annual production was 1,250,000 tons per annum.
However, due to local geological difficulties and manpower shortages output declined and the number of pits reduced from 30 at the beginning of the 20th century to 14 by the mid-thirties; the last two pits, Kilmersdon and Writhlington, closed in September 1973. The Great Western Railway and the Somerset and Dorset Railway both established stations and marshalling yards in the town. The last passenger train services to Radstock closed in 1966. Manufacturing industries such as printing, binding and packaging provide some local employment. In recent years, Radstock has increasingly become a commuter town for the nearby cities of Bath and Bristol.
Radstock is home to the Radstock Museum which is housed in a former market hall, and has a range of exhibits which offer an insight into north-east Somerset life since the 19th century. Many of the exhibits relate to local geology and the now disused Somerset coalfield and geology. The town is also home to Writhlington School, famous for its Orchid collection, and a range of educational, religious and cultural buildings and sporting clubs.
The main geological feature in this area of the Mendip Hills south of Hallatrow consists of Supra-Pennant Measures which includes the upper coal measures and outcrops of sandstone. The southern part of the Radstock Syncline have coals of the Lower and Middle Coal Measures been worked, mainly at the Newbury and Vobster collieries in the southeast and in the New Rock and Moorewood pits to the southwest.
Radstock was the terminus for the southern branch of the Somerset Coal Canal, which was turned into a tramway in 1815 and later incorporated into the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. It then became a central point for railway development with large coal depots, warehouses, workshops and a gas works. As part of the development of the Wilts, Somerset and Weymouth Railway an 8-mile (13 km) line from Radstock to Frome was built to carry the coal.

Melksham is a town on the River Avon in Wiltshire, England, about 4 ¹⁄₂ miles northeast of Trowbridge and 6 mi south of Chippenham. Melksham developed at a ford across the River Avon and the name is presumed to derive from meolc, the Old English for milk, and ham, a village. On John Speed's map of Wiltshire (1611), the name is spelt both Melkesam (for the hundred) and Milsham (for the town itself). Melksham was a royal estate at the time of the Norman Conquest.
Melksham is also the name of the Royal forest that occupied the surrounding of the area in the Middle Ages. An announcement was made in the Bath Chronicle in June 1792 of the establishment of the Melksham Bank by the firm of Awdry, Long & Bruges. In November 1813 the misquoting of part of an advertisement in two London newspapers caused panic amongst the bank customers, many of whom quickly withdrew their money, reportedly causing some bustle among the partners of the bank.
In 1815 the Melksham Spa Company was formed by a group of 'respectable gentlemen', with names such as Methuen, Long and others, all of whom had done very well from the now declining textile industry. Their aim was to promote a spa, after abortive attempts to find coal had uncovered two springs.
The civil parish of Melksham includes Melksham Forest, formerly a separate settlement 0.8 miles (1.3 km) to the northeast and now a suburb of the town. It has an Anglican church (St Andrew) and a Methodist church Based upon its overall road length, the shortest street in Melksham is aptly called Short Street, situated at the top of Melksham Forest.
The parish of Melksham Without includes several villages and suburbs of Melksham:
Bowerhill, a large residential community generally considered as separate from Melksham, with a large industrial area
Hunter's Meadow, a relatively new district north of Bowerhill
Berryfield, a village south of and adjacent to Melksham, often considered part of the town
Beanacre, a village to the north, again often considered as a northern suburb of the town.
Melksham has an Assembly Hall and the Rachel Fowler Centre while many of the surrounding villages have community halls which offer a wide variety of activities. Melksham Oak Community School offers a variety of sporting and cultural facilities to the community of Melksham.
The town is served by Melksham railway station, on the branch of the Wessex Main Line from Chippenham to Trowbridge, and currently it is served by eight trains in either direction each weekday (5 to 7 on Sunday), up from just 2 a day prior to December 2013. Trains are operated by Great Western Railway.
Melksham is on the north-south A350 main road from the M4 motorway (Junction 17, near Chippenham) to Poole on the south coast. It is served by bus companies including Faresaver and First West of England. The A350 stretch directly to the south of the town has been designed to allow for possible future expansion to dual-carriageway status if required.

Stanier Power - 44871 crushes Sapperton Bank at 35mph and a Scottish Bonus at the GWSR - 23/05/2019
The 23rd of May was a big day for filming just before the Bank Holiday. Whilst others get ready for an extended weekend, there is two special locos to film. On that day at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway, the Caledonian Railway ‘Caley’ engine no. 419 owned by The Scottish Railway Preservation Society. The engine is visiting the railway for the Cotswold of Festival of Steam during the bank holiday weekend. The engine had a runabout whilst hauling the railcar slot of the blue timetable that day. Unfortunately the engine around lunchtime but I managed to get one shot of her at Laverton passing through some stunning countryside. An oilseed rape field, green fields in the background, blue skies, white clouds and a stunning looking engine makes the shot so beautiful and charming.
The next loco in action was Ian Riley’s Black Five no. 44871 hauling The Cathedrals Express to Worcester out and back via Swindon and Cheltenham. I decided to go for a new spot at Eckington Viaduct with the locomotive crossing The River Avon on its last stretch of her very long journey from London. The area was a bit overgrown, happily I managed to get a nice clear shot of the engine gliding along at speed and sounding superb. Of course the highlight of the return leg was the climb up Sapperton Bank. As it was planned to be a gorgeous evening, the prospects were so good and decided to get to my spot as early as possible. I arrived at Frampton Mansell two hours before the train was due. The place got busy but it was a good bunch of people chatting and were very good company. The engine was running on time and was expecting it to be loud, and indeed it was. The noise through the woods was absolutely incredible and she sounded perfectly. She was so quick up there with 9 coaches in tow she roared past and managed to achieve an amazing 35mph in Sapperton Tunnel which is sensational for a class 5 up the bank. These engines are known for their hill climbing but even that was awesome, even the evening sun glistening on the locomotive made it even more special.

Trains at: Salisbury, WEML, WML 16/02/2019
Hello guys, welcome to the latest video from the Great Westerner and today we're at Salisbury on the West of England Mainline and the Wessex Mainline. Services seen here are from South Western Railway (serving) and Great Western Railway (serving). I previously visited Salisbury back in the summer of 2016 and it had not really changed since then. Often seen as one of the regional hubs for Wiltshire with most services heading to major destinations like Exeter, Bristol, Cardiff, Gloucester, London, Southampton, Brighton and Portsmouth as well as more minor areas like Yeovil, Castle Cary, Frome, Romsey and Honiton it always remains very busy and full of sprinter traffic. I was lucky to film the station with its announcements done by Phil Sayer (RIP) as the station announcements like many others on the SWR network have been changed to the Atos System with the same announcers as on the GWR network (Anne and Roger) so it was nice to have it filmed one last time. Also very nice to see the rather frequent Salisbury TMD ECS movements that take place around the station to head to the main depot, stabling or preparing for the next service.
