It has been the capital city of the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship since 1999, and was previously the capital of the predecessor Kielce Voivodeship . The city is located in the middle of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains , on the banks of the Silnica River, in northern part of the historical Polish province of Lesser Poland. The history of Kielce dates back over 900 years and the exact date when the town was founded remains unknown.     Henryk Sienkiewicz Street in Kielce is the main commercial and historic artery of the city of Kielce, Poland. It was built in the middle of the 19th century. It was originally called ulica Konstantego , then Postal Street and in 1919 it received its present name. Shops and department stores are located there as well as historic buildings and monuments. It is approximately 1270 meters long and runs from the railway station situated next to the Independence square to the Moniuszko Square.
