Tipperary to Waterford Greenway Proposal
The Rail line between Limerick-Junction and Waterford that is losing 5 million euros a year and is threatened with closure. The bus service along the same route gives a better and far more frequent service and is used far more. To redevelop the rail line into a Greenway would not cost much, and would provide more employment and social and economic benefits. It would attract tourists and day-trippers, who would pay for accommodation, meals and visit other attractions. A greenway would provide a safe environment for walking and cycling. The route has good motorway, rail and bus connectivity.
Along the route the rolling countryside is sparsely populated with fertile land, trees and hedgerows that are field boundaries, there are spectacular views of rolling countryside, distant mountains and the Sure river.
The farming comprises; dairy, cattle fattening, tillage and horse breeding and training farms, along with country parkland estates. The greenway would provide the opportunity to experience small mammals, birds, flowers, plants, the smells of rich vegetation, countryside sounds and the sights of historic structures in Ireland’s Ancient East.
On Thursday 31st August I took the train from Tipperary town to Waterford, this is what I found. I was the only person to get on the train in Tipperary. On average there were only 15 persons on board. 15 persons by an average fare of 5 euros gives 75 euros for Irish Rail. There are 4 train journeys per day. The train has 3 coaches with a total of 175 seats.
