My Favorite Food in Yangon, Myanmar 2016
Burmese food at its finest. This is a typical Burmese rice lunch set at Aun Thu Kha Restaurant. During the frantic lunch rush you should just sit down and order from a menu. it is more quiet, then coming directly up to the food prep station and ordering might be a better option because you can view your food. The traditionally cooked proteins were all excellent. None were too salty, which tends to happen in rice based dishes. Burmese flavors are very mild and nothing too extreme, which is what I generally prefer. My favorite dishes were the prawns and the brain... yes... brain.s
Make it a point to try a Burmese rice lunch when you're in Myanmar.

About Koi Fish
Koi (鯉?, English /ˈkɔɪ/, Japanese: [koꜜi]) or more specifically nishikigoi (錦鯉?, [niɕi̥kiꜜɡo.i], literally brocaded carp), are a group of fish that are ornamental varieties of domesticated common carp (Cyprinus carpio) that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens.
Koi varieties are distinguished by coloration, patterning, and scalation. Some of the major colors are white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. The most popular category of koi is the Gosanke, which is made up of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, and Showa Sanshoku varieties.
Carp are a large group of fish originally found in Central Europe and Asia. Various carp species were originally domesticated in East Asia, where they were used as food fish. Carp are coldwater fish, and their ability to survive and adapt to many climates and water conditions allowed the domesticated species to be propagated to many new locations, including Japan. Natural color mutations of these carp would have occurred across all populations. Carp were first bred for color mutations in China more than a thousand years ago, where selective breeding of the Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio) led to the development of the goldfish.
The common carp was aquacultured as a food fish at least as long ago as the fifth century BC in China, and in the Roman Empire during the spread of Christianity in Europe. Common carp were bred for color in Japan in the 1820s, initially in the town of Ojiya in the Niigata prefecture on the northeastern coast of Honshu island. By the 20th century, a number of color patterns had been established, most notably the red-and-white Kohaku. The outside world was not aware of the development of color variations in koi until 1914, when the Niigata koi were exhibited at an annual exposition in Tokyo. From that time, interest in koi spread throughout Japan. It was from this original handful of koi that all other Nishikigoi varieties were bred, with the exception of the Ogon variety (single colored, metallic koi) which was developed relatively recently.
The hobby of keeping koi eventually spread worldwide. Koi are now sold in many pet aquarium shops, with higher-quality fish available from specialist dealers.
Extensive hybridization between different populations has muddled the historical zoogeography of the common carp. However, scientific consensus is that there are at least two subspecies of the common carp, one from Western Eurasia (Cyprinus carpio carpio) and another from East Asia (Cyprinus carpio haematopterus). One recent study on the mitochondrial DNA of various common carp indicate that koi are of the East Asian subspecies.[6] However, another recent study on the mitochondrial DNA of koi have found that koi are descended from multiple lineages of common carp from both Western Eurasian and East Asian varieties. This could be the result of koi being bred from a mix of East Asian and Western Eurasian carp varieties, or being bred exclusively from East Asian varieties and being subsequently hybridized with Western Eurasian varieties (the butterfly koi is one known product of such a cross). Which is true has not been resolved.
Etymology
The word koi comes from Japanese, simply meaning carp. It includes both the dull grey fish and the brightly colored varieties. What are known as koi in English are referred to more specifically as nishikigoi in Japan (literally meaning brocaded carp). In Japanese, koi is a homophone for another word that means affection or love; koi are therefore symbols of love and friendship in Japan.

Big Bischofia Javanica in Shuri
Shuri, Naha City, Okinawa
In Naha City, near Shuri-jo Castle, there are national monuments of Japan: Oo Akagi of Shuri. A conditon of the path to this spot is not good. Make sure you wear suitable shoes for walking. Six Akagi trees are standing at the road side of a branch road of Kinjo-Cho Stone Pavement. Those trees survibed through Battle of Okinawa and aged around 200 to 300 years. At the part near the root of the biggest tree, there is a small shrine in the hollow. It's said that every 15th of June in Lunar Calender, God visits this sacred place and make one's wish come true... Please visit and feel spiritual atmosphere.

Thanks to Frank and Jerry of Zouba Tours: for taking me around. I paid for this tour, but they did a great job and I would recommend them.
Kunming, Yunnan, China - Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan province China. So I was excited to explore the local market in Kunming and eat as much street food as possible!
Here are all the Chinese street food dishes we ate throughout the market:
Rice pudding - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was slightly fermented, and sweet, like a rice alcohol pudding. It was pretty good, but quite sweet, so I couldn’t eat that much of it.
Dumpling - 1 RMB ($0.15) - I saw these dumplings sizzling and hissing and there was no way I could walk by without trying one. Stuffed inside were leek and egg. They were a little on the oily side, but delicious.
Whole duck - 20 RMB ($3.03) - Yunnan is famous for roast duck, and there’s a version that’s comparable even to Beijing style. Style I was excited to find a stall that at the market that specialize in Yunnanese roast duck. It was delicious and the owners were very friendly as well.
Pickled pears - 5 RMB ($0.76) - This was an interesting snack, and supposed to be very healthy and good for digestion.
Drink - 2 RMB ($0.30) - This drink was incredible sweet, but refreshing.
Tofu Noodles - 5.5 RMB ($0.83) - Another extremely popular Chinese street food snack at the market was tofu noodles - I’ve had tofu and noodles, but not really mixed before. It was a little plain and starchy, but from all the sauces, it was taty.
Rice balls - 5 RMB ($0.76) - We also tried sesame rice balls which were delicious.
Jacuzzi braised ½ chicken - 15 RMB ($2.27) - This was one of the highlights of the market for me, mainly because the owner was so friendly and his giant jacuzzi of boiling chickens was amazing to see! The chicken was a little bony, but flavorful.
Yellow soybean porridge - 3.5 RMB ($0.53) - As we were leaving the market, we stopped for one last bowl of soybean porridge to eat with youtiau, Chinese donuts. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did, but it was delicious. It was very warming and hearty.
Finally to complete this Chinese street food tour in Kunming, Jerry and I, along with his family ate Chinese Yunnanese bbq. It was tasty and a great way to end this amazing day of street food.
Special thanks to Zouba Tours ( for arranging everything in this video. I paid for this tour, but I think they did a great job, and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and the tour.
That completes Day 4 of this Chinese food tour of Yunnan. If you haven’t already, watch the full series here:
