Gateway Festival - Kings Mountain is a segment of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas, which aired in syndication on October 25, 2014.
In this episode we travel with Carl to the annual Gateway Festival at Patriots Park in Kings Mountain for a day of historical and cultural excitement.
One of the key attractions of the day is a re-enactment of the Revolutionary War's 1780 Battle of Kings Mountain in which the Patriots defeated the Loyalists and, by many accounts, turned the tide of the war in favor of the colonists. The use of authentic cannons and muskets, and period costumes, gives a heightened sense of historical accuracy.
Carl speaks with Rick Murphrey, Mayor of Kings Mountain, who emphasizes that the festival not only celebrates the Battle of Kings Mountain but also its status as a gateway to the three parks: Crowder's Mountain State Park, Kings Mountain State Park and Kings Mountain National Military Park.
Ellis Noell, Director of Special Events, summarizes the event as being an opportunity for guests to appreciate the re-enactment of the battle, local art history, music, and the culture of Kings Mountain. Numerous regional musicians perform throughout the festival, including bluegrass and new grass music.

Kings Mountain NC Gateway Trail Fall Colors
The Kings Mountain Gateway Trail is a greenway designed to connect the City of Kings Mountain to Crowder's Mountain State Park, Kings Mountain State Park, Kings Mountain National Military Park, the Overmountain Victory Trail and the Appalachian Trail. This 8 to 10 mile greenway will consist of paved trail, soft-packed gravel trail and single-track mountain biking trails. The trail is already providing recreational opportunities to thousands of people in our region, enhancing economic development for our community, and providing a venue for citizens to link to one another and the rich history of our region. Six signs located at different areas of the trail tell the history of the area.

“This was the main trade route between Charlotte and Asheville,” says Jim Proctor, former mayor of Lake Lure, NC. “And not only was this a trade route, it was very early on a tourist location. So, this was a place that travelers came to visit not just because it was a waystation, but because it was a great place to stay. And then around the turn of the last century, Lucius Morse came to visit, and he and his family are the folks that bought Chimney Rock Park at that time, and had the vision for Lake Lure. So in the mid-1920s, they ended up buying over 8,000 acres, and 720 acres ended up being what's now Lake Lure.”
“We bought the house as a vacation home. But then, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to move up here full-time,” says John Moore, Lake Lure resident.
“If you've traveled in European countries, and you've been on rivers and huge lakes in Geneva, Switzerland, you see these mountains rising up out of the water, and I think that that is what we have in Lake Lure,” says Paula Moore. “It's like a little piece of Europe right here in the United States, and we feel like we live on vacation, and that is one of the pluses.”
“Now, Lake Lure has just magnificent mountains, the rock cliffs, every kind of vegetation you can dream of, and of course, that's why a lot of folks come and why a lot of movies have been filmed here,” says Proctor. “Dirty Dancing was filmed right down the road, at what used to be Camp Chimney Rock. That was really fun. And then, of course, several years later, The Last of the Mohicans was filmed at Chimney Rock up the hill.”
“We love living around the lake, have a lot of friends who live here, spend time with them,” says Mr. Moore. “We can get to their houses by boat. We can get to the restaurants, to Larkin's and the restaurants downtown by boat, or the restaurants up at the resort.”
“There was an opportunity here in Lake Lure to live on the lake and run a restaurant that's also on the lake, that has its own boat docks, and we've been here, now, 15 years, and we still often commute to our restaurant by boat. Sometimes I even water ski to work,” says Mark Hammond, owner of Larkin’s Restaurant.
“Even when you consider, when I was growing up, there was probably 200 residents, and now there's 1,200, Lake Lure still doesn't have a signal light,” says Proctor. “We have one grocery store, one pharmacy. All the scenic beauty that was here when I was little is still here. It's remarkable that the mountain ranges are still just as scenic now as when I was growing up. The mountains that are literally surrounding this house, the vast majority of those mountains are now protected forever, and that's just real exciting for me.”

A True US Roadtrip: Roundtrip from North Carolina to Cali
This 11 minute tour of the United States from 'coast to coast' is a compilation of video footage recorded during a cross-country road trip from May 13, 2012 - June 13, 2012. The total miles driven were 8631, including a total of 19 states (listed below). ALL footage is 100% ORIGINAL, taken with a Canon PowerShot SX30 IS and Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS. I am not a professional photographer, director, or movie editor; just a guy with his girlfriend and a camera who explored this beautiful country during one incredible summer month. Cleveland County -The Epic History is a segment of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas TV Show, which first aired in syndication on January 24, 2015.
Carl first provides an enthralling history lesson about the namesake of the county, Col. Benjamin Cleveland, a militia leader of the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780. Using his rich skills of storytelling and the accompanying video battle reenactments, Carl brings Col. Cleveland's leadership and heroism to life with realism and charm.
Next, Carl takes us to the Webbley House located in the county seat of Shelby. This was the home of O Max Gardner, former governor of NC. Gardner's wife Fay Lamar Webb was the daughter of James L Webb and niece of Congressman Edwin Y Webb. Carl discusses several of the prestigious state and national political leaders from Cleveland County NC, including Congressman, Governor, and Senator Clyde Hoey and Tim Moore of King's Mountain, recently appointed Speaker of the NC General Assembly.
Finally, we get a fly-on-the-wall insider's view of the textile industry when Carl takes us with him on his visit to STI, a leader of furniture upholstery located in King's Mountain. He interviews John Kay, president of STI on the floor of the factory, and asks all the questions we'd ask if we were with him. It is an informative and very entertaining look behind the scenes of a fascinating industry.
