The Best Place To See Kangaroos and Koalas in Australia is Kangaroo Island!
Kangaroo Island is an incredible place to visit in Australia. The island is Australia’s second largest (after Tasmania) and is located close to Adelaide in the state of South Australia. A short car ride followed by a scenic ferry trip brings you to this wildlife paradise. There are lots of things to do on the island from diving and sand boarding to tasting local wines. Where Kangaroo Island really comes to life is its great nature and wildlife. The coastline is amazingly beautiful and wildlife such as Kangaroos, Wallabies (and even very shy Koalas) can be found everywhere. You could stay for a week on Kangaroo Island (and some people never leave), but 3 days is a great amount of time to explore the best of Kangaroo Island. What to do and where to go on your 3 Days on Kangaroo Island? See it all in our in depth destination guide and latest episode of Australian Adventurer, our original travel videos series where we discover the best of Australia.

City Description:
Kangaroo Island lies off the mainland of South Australia, southwest of Adelaide. Over a third of the island is protected in nature reserves, home to native wildlife like sea lions, koalas and diverse bird species. In the west, Flinders Chase National Park is known for penguin colonies and striking coastal rock formations, like the sculpted Remarkable Rocks and the stalactite-covered Admirals Arch.Established in 1836 as South Australia's first colonial settlement, the island’s main town of Kingscote is now a small tourist centre. On the south coast, Vivonne Bay is known for cray fishing and the Little Sahara sand dunes. Nearby, Seal Bay Conservation Park is home to a large colony of Australian sea lions. Also around the island are colonies of 33cm-tall Little penguins. On the northwest tip, the circa-1858 Cape Borda Lighthouse has daily cannon firings. Offshore, the Western Kangaroo Island Marine Park is home to dive sites around shipwrecks. Back on land, the Kelly Hill Conservation Park features dramatic limestone caves.
Weather and Events:
The island has a Mediterranean coastal climate and is warm and dry Nov–Mar, mild and rainy Jun–Sep. Peak travel takes place during summer holidays (Dec–Jan), with Feb–Apr and Oct also being popular times. Key events include the Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival (Feb), centred around horse racing, and the Kangaroo Island FEASTival (Apr/May, dates vary), showcasing the island's foods and wines.
