Ko Kret, Nonthaburi, Bangkok - Thailand 4K Travel Channel
Ko Kret, an island in the Chao Phraya River, lies approximately 20 km north of central Bangkok .By minibus we drive to the ferry that brings us to the island. At the north eastern tip of the island, a white leaning Chedi catches the eye. It's Phra Chedi Mu Dao, the symbol of the island. The river has undermined the foundation, so that the sanctuary leans dangerously to the side.
The island has no natural origin. About 200 years ago the tribe the Mon settled here. The bend of the river bend was joined by a channel which was continually rinsed out, so that the river bend has become an island today. The island is 9 square kilometers in size and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. Alternatively, one can make a trip around the island by boat.
The island alone has 6 temples. The most important is the Wat Poramai with the leaning Chedi.
However, Ko Kret is known for its ceramics and its market. After we have tasted some freshly prepared delights, we try to get an initial overview. But this is not so easy, as the market leads straight along the water.
At one stall, we buy an anti-mosquito spray. The seller gave me some money back and I did not pay further attention. When we are already several metres away she comes after me and gives me another 400 Bath, because I have paid with 500. We have not expected so much honesty here!
In general the market is a little rural and differs from the markets in Bangkok, where one struggles for every centimeter of space. Here is still a bit homely.
Another saleswoman used her cat for promotional purposes. The cat in the basket was the perfect mean for advertising the products.
We see some fish and turtles in baskets. At first we suspect that they are offered for a meal. But then we see that a man buys some of them and releases them into the water of the river. (Where the sellers presumably catch them again. Well, we do not have to understand everything.)
A few meters further, a talking bird welcomes the passing tourists; however, in Thai. We were told that it means ? Good day, how are you

Hi everyone! Today I’m going to the Island!!!!!!!! but it’s not too far from Bangkok, it’s in Nonthaburi. “Koh Kret”
FYI : Koh Kret is a small island in the Chao Phraya River, just north of Bangkok, Thailand. It’s known as a settlement of the Mon people, whose famed terracotta is on display in the Kwan Aman Museum. This traditional earthenware is still produced in potteries along the river. On the northeastern tip of the island, Wat Poramai Yikawat is an important Buddhist temple featuring a reclining Buddha and a leaning stupa. (Wiki)
At the First Zone, after you drop down from the ferry boat, you’ll see the little food market. There have many kinds of Thai street food such as flowers, vegetable, and seafood deep fried ( 50 baht~ 1.5$), Thai waffle with corn ( 10 baht ~ 0.3 $), Sugar Paste ( start from 30 baht ~1$ , it depends on shave) for the sugar paste,it’s Thai candy. You can order Rose, Dragon, flowers or anything, just ask the vendor. He is so kind.
So We’re moving to the second zone where is Pottery village. There have lots of Art products to buy. I mean it’s not too Art, it’s just handmade things from the artist such as pottery, you can buy from the market as in video or you can make them with Thai artist at the academy. In this zone, there have much kind stuff to shop such as lady purse, silk clothes, handmade indigo clothes, handmade accessories, handmade perfume, soap scrub, lotion with Thai flower and herb. You will take 3-4 hour in this zone, it’s really good product there.
The last Craft spot that I’d like to share you, “Craft Beer”. This is “Chit Beer” after you drop down from the ferry boat, go to the right way and go straight, the bar will be on the left hand ( or use google map :p ) Chit Beer is a Thai Craft beer bar, There also is academy, you can book and workshop there on Saturday. Most of Beer is Thai from Many Thai brewers, some of them are from the students who studied there. You can taste 20 kinds of them in one day. The price is cheaper than Craft beer bar in Bangkok, it just starts at 100 baht ~ 3$ per pine.

Koh Kret - The Island Life in Bangkok
Bangkok may be many things but relaxing and traffic-free it is not.
So, it may be surprising to know that just 20km from the concrete towers of downtown Bangkok is an island where there are no cars and life is lived at a much slower pace.
Koh Kret is in the province of Nonthaburi just to the North of Bangkok. Situated in the middle of the Chao Phraya river, the island can be reached by ferry from a pier inside the Wat Sanam Neua Temple. Ferries operate every few minutes from 6.00 am until 9.00 pm. It’s very cheap at only 2 baht!
A few minutes later, you arrive in a place that seems a long way from the hustle and bustle of the city. With no cars or trucks on the island and only the occasional motorbike, the best way to get around the island is by bicycle or on foot. The road that loops around the island is about 6km long.
The area around the pier on the Eastern side of the island is the most touristy part. Here there are quite a few cafes and a popular craft beer bar. It’s a nice way to spend an afternoon.
The narrow, winding streets are lined by old wooden houses and there’s a lot of interesting sights.
Away from the pier area, the village gives way to farm land and is very peaceful and relaxing.
This video was shot using the DJI Osmo Pocket.

Koh Kret – Day Trip to Bangkok’s River Island
Did you know there’s an island in the Chao Phraya River near Bangkok? Koh Kret (เกาะเกร็ด also sometimes spelt Ko Kret)is an island in the Chao Phraya River, 20 km north of Bangkok, Thailand.
If you’re in Bangkok and looking for a great experience and a day trip out of the city, Koh Kret (เกาะเกร็ด) is a fun place to visit.
a laid-back atmosphere once you’re on the island.
This is a 2 part video of our trip to Koh Kret
New Meaws Girlfriend takes us around the island for a tour
and we also cruising the river this time right around the
take nice shots of the golden Buddha
and a walk through the market which was basically closed but a few interesting things open

Today we visit Mews girlfriends house on Koh Kret an island in Bangkok nobody knows its there.
She is preparing to have it renovated as a homestay and will spend 10 Million on renovations
We have some lunch on one of the many barges along the river then off to the market for some shopping
All in all a great day out
The island dates only to 1722, when a canal was constructed as a shortcut to bypass a bend in the Chao Phraya river. As the canal was widened several times, the section cut off eventually became a separate island.
The Chao Phraya green flag express boat offers a direct service from BTS Saphan Taksin to Pak Kret (pier N33) during peak hours only. Boats operate every 15-20 min from 06:15 to 08:00 in the morning from Ko Kret south to Bangkok, and again from 15:30 to 18:00 in the evening from Bangkok northwards to Ko Kret, with no service on Sundays. The trip costs 20 baht and takes just over an hour. As the service from Pak Kret operates INTO town in the morning and OUT of town in the evening this service is not particularly helpful for day trippers from Bangkok.
Sightseeing boats that do a circuit of the island (see itinerary below) leave the pier every single hour from 09:00 to 17:00, costing 50 baht/person. There is also the possibility of renting a boat at the price of 500-4,000 Baht depending on the distance and the size of the boat. It will take around 1 hour and a half for the whole trip. For more information, contact Wat Poramaiyikawat Pier at +66 25 845 012.
While the locals speak little English, there are useful multilingual maps of the island near the ferry pier and at a couple other points around the island. There are occasional distance signposts along the footpath, and most sights around the island have been labelled in English.

Ko Kret - The island in the Chaopraya river Thailand
Ko Kret - the island in Chaopraya river, Nontaburi, Thailand
Ko Kret – The Island On Chaopraya River
The island of Ko Kret, is a small island on the Chaopraya River. It is very close to the north bounds of Bangkok, and is formally located inside Pak Kret, which is a district of the Nonthaburi province. The district borders the northwest side of Bangkok and constitutes, together with the city of Bangkok, one giant urban entity. The border between the two is almost unnoticeable.
Ko Kret’s history begins on the year 1722, when it was decided to dig a canal in order to make a shortcut to the local river bend. The canal was widened and eventually created an island, known today as Ko Kret. The island served as a refuge for the people of the Mon Tribe, and they brought with them the art of traditional pottery. Some of the tribe people live on the island to this very day and practice the same traditional art.
The island is square shaped and is not big; it is 2 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide. The population is around 6000, in 6-7 villages. The largest village is called – Ban Mon.
Ko Kret was severely damaged during the floods around Bangkok a few years ago. As you can see in the attached Map, the island is very close to my workplace – the Thai Ministry of Public Health, and I closely followed its restoration.
It took over a year and a half to recover.
On the island you’ll find several temples, the largest and most important one is Wat Poramai Yigawat temple, an ancient temple, built in the style of the Mon, it holds a major part of the tribe’s activities. One of the island’s symbols is the temple’s slanted Chedi (as seen on the photo to the Right).
The island is a total contrast to the atmosphere that prevails upon the giant bubbly urban bloc, found only meters away. Similar to the green lung of Bangkok – Bang Krajao, the feeling is as if you are in a small rural area far away from the capital. Because Ko Kret is much smaller then Bangkok’s green lung (Bang Krajao), it is very easy to get around.
The temples are not the main attraction on the island, but rather these 3 topics – handcrafts, various foods and pottery. All are bound under the name OTOP.
