Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary | Best South Indian Bird Photography Site
Koonthankulam Birds Sanctuary is a unique sanctuary actively protected and managed by the Koonthakulam village community. The largest breeding water bird reserve in south India attracts more than one lakh birds annually. It is located 35 kms away from Tirunelveli in Tirunelveli Thisaianvilai Road comprising of Koonthankulam and Kadankulam tanks covering an extent of 129.33 hectares and declared as sanctuary in 1994.
It is significant that the local people have taken keen interest in protecting this sanctuary and they live together in total symbiotic relationship.
The birds coming to their backyards for five generations are protected vehemently by villagers and regarded as harbingers of luck. The excreta of birds–‘guano’ is collected by villagers in summer along with silt to use as fertilizer in their fields. From children to grannies in the village all protect them, their nests and fledglings. Chicks fallen are taken care of in the rescue centre till they are able to fly on their own. Anybody troubling the nests are punished inn their own methods of shaving the head, or making the procession on donkey.
The Babul plantation of 30 ha. in koonthakulam is the main breeding ground.
More than 43 water birds both resident and migratory are visiting every year regularly in the month of January/February and used to vacate in the month of July/August after nesting, hatching and nurturing the young once. Many large water birds especially Painted stork, Flamingos have been nesting annually around koonthankulam village over a long period . Accacia nilotica trees grown in the tank foreshores by the Social Forestry Division of Forest Department and also in village trees.

Vedanthankal / வேடந்தாங்கல்
Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is a 30-hectare (74-acre) protected area located in the Kancheepuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The sanctuary is about 75 kilometres (47 mi) from Chennai on National Highway 45 (NH45), south of Chengalpattu. More than 40,000 birds, from various parts of the world visit the sanctuary during the migratory season every year.
Vedanthangal is home to migratory birds such as pintail, garganey, grey wagtail, blue-winged teal, common sandpiper etc. Vedanthangal is the oldest water bird sanctuary in the country. Vedanthangal in Tamil language means 'hamlet of the hunter'.
This area was a favourite hunting spot of the local landlords in the early 18th century. The region attracted a variety of birds because it was dotted with small lakes that acted as feeding grounds for the birds. Realising its ornithological importance, the British government undertook steps to develop Vedanthangal into a bird sanctuary as early as 1798. This was established in 1858 by the order of the Collector of Chengalpattu.
The best time to visit this sanctuary is from November to March. During this time, birds are seen busy building and maintaining their nests. Villagers near this sanctuary are very concerned about the sanctuary and its winged residents, and they have taken many serious steps to avoid disturbance to the flow of birds.

Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary (Karnataka)
From Sakrabyle Elephant Camp we went to Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary which is about 15 kms from Gajnur and 30 kms from Shimoga. It is a huge area of forest and an island in the river Tunga. There are large numbers of white birds (5-10 thousand) in this island. There is a watchtower to climb and watch the birds from a hight. It is a good place for bird and nature lovers.
