The capital of the state of Sabah located on the island of Borneo, this Malaysian city is a growing resort destination due to its proximity to tropical islands, lush rainforests and Mount Kinabalu. Generally referred to as KK, it is located on the west coast of Sabah within the West Coast Division. KK is the largest city in the state in Sabah and is the main gateway into the island of Borneo.
KK lies by the coast overlooking South China Sea on a narrow flatland and occasional hills bordered by Crocker Range which hosts Mount Kinabalu. The urban sprawl is concentrated along the coast towards the north and south of the city.
Kota Kinabalu is a growing city of around 500,000 inhabitants. Recent economic growth has resulted in urbanisation of the city reaching adjacent districts of Penampang and Putatan with a total population of almost 800,000. Recent growth and importance is due to being the administrative capital, a major transportation hub, growing port, manufacturing hub, growing tourism as well as being the major gateway into Sabah and East Malaysia. Kota Kinabalu was granted city status in 2000 becoming the sixth city and also currently the sixth largest urban/metropolitan area in Malaysia.
Kota Kinabalu was previously known as Jesselton while under British colonial rule from the late 1800s until 1963 when the British left and after Sabah became part of Malaysia. Most of the town was destroyed due to bombings during World War II hence there are not much pre-war historical sites around the city. Before the British arrived, the area was also known by a number of other names such as Deasoka (below the coconut tree), Singgah Mata (pleasing to the eye), Api-Api (fire!) and Gaya Bay.
The people of KK consists of Chinese, Kadazandusun, Bajau, Brunei Malays, as well as significant migrant population from Indonesia and Philippines, many of which are naturalised citizens. There are also many migrant/expat population from India and a growing number from Republic of Korea.
Central Kota Kinabalu is often referred to as Kota Kinabalu City Centre or the Central Business district (CBD) or simply Downtown KK and is located on the narrow coast overlooking Gaya Island. This is where most hotels, travel agents, transportation bases and most of the action are found. Most of the city centre lies on reclaimed land due to shortage of land in the area as it is blocked by Signal Hill (Bukit Bendera). Areas which lie within the city centre includes Kampung Air, Api-Api, Segama, Sinsuran, Bandaran Berjaya, Gaya Street, KK Port and towards south are Karamunsing, Sembulan, Tanjung Aru and Sutera Harbour.
Due to lack of land in the city centre, other important commercial areas have sprouted outside CBD. Some of these areas have been long in existence as small townships (pekan) such as Luyang, Inanam and Menggatal and in adjacent districts of Penampang (Donggongon) and Putatan while some are recently developed residential-commercial areas such as Alam Mesra, Kingfisher and 1Borneo near Menggatal; Lintas, Penampang Baru and Bundusan.
The climate in KK is charaterised by uniform year-round temperature of 32°C (90 °F)(avg. high) and 22°C (72 °F)(avg. low). Rain falls quite often with occasional dry streaks. Low rainfall begins in January till April, increasing in May till August, intensifying in September till November and slows down in December.

Best Place To Chill in Kota Kinabalu - KK City Waterfront
Best Place To Chill in Kota Kinabalu
KK City Waterfront
July 2, 2017
Compared to other Southeast Asian countries, Malaysia doesn’t have a drinking culture mainly because majority of the population are Muslims. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have nightlife and bars. So if you are a tourist visiting this capital city of Sabah in Malaysian Borneo, the best place to booze is at KK city Waterfront.
This attraction in Kota Kinabalu has about 2 kilometers of Waterfront Boardwalk that offers an array of restaurants, bar and spas. Nothing Feels like relaxing while having a bottle of beer and watch the sun slowly sets over the South China Sea.
Best time to come is during happy hours from around 5pm to 9pm wher beer costs at around RM 12.00 to 16.00 per bottle and normally goes up to RM 22.00 after happy hours.

Kota Kinabalu (pronounced [ˈkota kinaˈbalu]), formerly known as Jesselton,[1][2] is the capital of the state of Sabah, which is located in East Malaysia. It is also the capital of the West Coast Division of Sabah. The city is located along the northwest coast of Borneo facing the South China Sea. The Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park[3] lies on its west and Mount Kinabalu, which gave the city its name, is located towards the east. Kota Kinabalu proper has a population of 452,058,[4] while the larger urban area, which includes the Penampang district, has an estimated population of 628,725.[4]
Kota Kinabalu is often known as KK within Malaysia and internationally. For the locals it is also known as Api-Api.[5] It is a major fishing destination and a popular gateway for travellers visiting Sabah and Borneo.[2][6] Kinabalu National Park is located about 90 kilometres from the city and there are many tourist attractions in and around the city. Kota Kinabalu is also one of the major industrial and commercial centres of East Malaysia. These two factors combine to make Kota Kinabalu one of the fastest growing cities in Malaysia.[7][8]
There are a number of cultural venues in Kota Kinabalu. The Sabah State Museum, situated near the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, is the main museum of Sabah.[3] In the vicinity of the museum are the Science and Technology Centre, Sabah Art Gallery, and the Ethno Botanic Gardens. Wisma Budaya Art Gallery in the city centre hosts some national as well as regional art exhibitions. The Hongkod Koisaan building in Penampang is home to the Kadazan-Dusun Cultural Association (KDCA).[92] It hosts the annual Kaamatan or Harvest Festival and the Unduk Ngadau beauty contest, which is held concurrently, in March. Monsopiad Cultural Village (Kampung Monsopiad) features cultural shows related to the Kadazan-Dusun culture. It is named after the legendary Kadazan-Dusun headhunting warrior, Monsopiad.[93]
Kota Kinabalu also features a number of shopping malls. These include Kompleks Karamunsing, Centre Point, Wisma Merdeka, Warisan Square, Plaza Wawasan, Kompleks Asia City,[3] City Mall, KK Plaza, Suria Sabah and 1Borneo, which is the largest hypermall in Kota Kinabalu.[69] Newly constructed malls in Kota Kinabalu include the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, which currently holds GSC Kota Kinabalu, and Megalong Shopping Mall, which is situated in the district of Penampang.[69] Karamunsing, where Kompleks Karamunsing is situated, is an area that has more computer shops per capita than anywhere else in Sabah.[110] The weekly Gaya Street Sunday Market features a gathering of local hawkers selling a wide range of items from traditional ethnic cultural souvenirs to pets and flowers.[111] The Kota Kinabalu Handicraft Market (formerly known as the Filipino Market) features vendors selling traditional handicrafts, souvenirs and foodstuffs.[112]
There are many leisure spots and conserved areas in and around Kota Kinabalu. Anjung Samudra (KK Waterfront) is a waterfront entertainment spot in the city centre which features restaurants, cafes, pubs, and a nightclub. The Royal Sabah Turf Club in Tanjung Aru hosts weekly horse racing events but has since closed and moved to Tambalang Race Course in Tuaran due to the expansion of Kota Kinabalu International Airport. The North Borneo Railway, which begins its journey from Tanjung Aru station, offers a scenic tour of the countryside in the West Coast Division and the Interior Division.[15] The railway journey ends in the town of Tenom.[15] Sutera Harbour Golf & Country Club near the city centre was built on reclaimed land.[3] It features a golf and country club, a marina, and two hotels.
Tanjung Aru, located about 6 kilometres from the city centre, is one of the beaches along the West Coast. Its name was derived from the casuarina trees (locally called Aru trees) that grow on the shoreline.[97] The beach is over 2 kilometres in length and is complemented with a number food and drink stalls, restaurants, and night entertainment clubs. In the vicinity of Tanjung Aru lies the Kinabalu Golf Club, Prince Philip Botanical Park, KK Yacht Club, and Shangri-La's Tanjung Aru Beach Resort. This beach is famous for its sunset.[98][99]

Follow Us to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah as Jim hosted our friends from Poland! (^_^)
We took an afternoon flight from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu with AirAsia. Our choice of accommodation was Le Meridien Kota Kinabalu. After enjoying our happy hour in the hotel which is complimentary for the Marriott Platinum guests, we visited the night market right opposite the hotel.
We had a sumptuous breakfast the next morning and it was island hopping thereafter! Starting our island-hopping at 10am, we opted to spent about 3 hours each in Manukan Island and Sapi Island.
An enjoyable trip indeed!
