36 RAINY HOURS | TROMSØ, NORWAY MINI VLOG
In which I spend a lovely 36 hours in Tromsø, Norway, but have a nightmare filming and editing. Went up north to stay with my friend Sylvi for a few days and it was the best weekend in a while, but unfortunately it rained constantly (and a LOT) so my informative-talky vlog turned into a rather hastily filmed clip-compilation. I also lost some footage so there is no ending to this video, but I hope you enjoy the little bits and bobs anyway! X

Polaria (I was going to explain this in the video but alas. Polaria is an experience centre based on research from the University of Svalbard and the Arctic University of Tromsø as well as the marine life institute. It presents research and information through videos, small aquariums and informational plaques, as well as a seal research facility.)

Our routes for Fjords Excursion as provided by our guide, Ms Meda of Chasing Lights:
After leaving Tromsøya to the West, we entered Kvaløya (Whale Island) which is Norway’s fifth largest island. We stopped for a view over to Tromsøya, continued to the island Håkøya where we visited the wreck of the 1944 sunk Tirpitz, the world’s biggest battle ship. After returning to Kvaløya, we drove past Kaldfjord. We continued to Ersfjordbotn, Ersfjord and later on drove to Litlevatnet, the „little lake“. After this we continued to Sandy Beach in Grøtfjord. Finally, we turned back towards Grøtfjord village where we had a campfire and lunch. On our way back to Tromsøya we had clearer sky and we decided to stop again close to Ersfjord and I think it was the right decision, because the view there was spectacular.

We left Tromsø to the South, drove to the mainland to Nordkjosbotn (the town with the Mack brewery) and continued to the East towards the Finnish border. We stopped just before Finland, where we enjoyed amazing starry sky and the first beautiful Northern Lights. We were even more lucky because the Green Lady decided to stay with us for most of the night and she was as magical as always!
It was pretty cold night but cosy campfire helped us to survive real Arctic weather. In the end we had a quick visit crossing over to Finland before returning to Norway.
Iceland Itinerary:
Super Jeep Adventure snowmobile ride on Langjökull glacier, while visiting some of Iceland's most famous and exciting natural wonders.
Day 1: City tour of Reykjavik by foot after checking in to Hotel Borg. Dinner at the Fish Market Restaurant.
Day 2: The Golden Circle tour by Superjeep covering Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir National Park, which is one of Iceland’s most significant historical sites, and a snowmobiling tour on Langjökull, Iceland’s second largest glacier.
Day 3: Pick up 4W drive car from Hertz and drive to Hotel Ranga in Hella near Vik. Visit Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss and nearby areas. Watch a 25min documentary of the Eyjafjallajökull 2010 eruption in a nearby museum.
Day 4: Take the scenic southern coastal drive to the Blue Lagoon at Grindavik passing thru lava fields and black sand beaches. Thereafter drive back to Reykjavik. Check in Hotel Borg.
Day 5: Depart Reykjavik. Return car at the airport.

About Hammerfest

Hammerfest is a city and municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. The municipality encompasses parts of three islands: Kvaløya, Sørøya, and Seiland. Hammerfest was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The law required that all cities should be separated from their rural districts, but because of low population, and very few voters, this was impossible to carry out for Hammerfest in 1838. (See also Vadsø and Vardø.) The rural district of Hammerfest (Sørøysund) was separated from the city on 1 January 1852, but it was merged back into the city on 1 January 1992 (but without the area of Kvalsund, which was separated from Sørøysund as a municipality of its own in 1869).
Hammerfest - the name
The town is named after an old anchorage. The first element is hammer, referring to a number of large rocks, good for mooring boats, called Hamran (Old Norse: Hamarr - steep mountainside). The Hamran were covered up in land reclaiming during the early post-war years. The last element is fest, from Old Norse festr which means 'fastening' (for boats).
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from relatively modern times. They were granted on 16 December 1938. The arms of Hammerfest, a silver polar bear on a red background, were prepared for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the town's foundation in 1939. The polar bear was chosen as a symbol for the fishing in the polar seas north of Norway. The polar bear itself is not native to mainland Norway.

Sjunkfjorden is a fjord in Sjunkhatten National Park. The fjord itself is 11 km long and surrounded by over 1000-metres high mountains on three of its sides. A handful people live at the farm in Vassvika year-round, while some others have their holiday cabin at Færoyvatnet, close to the nearest town of Rørvik.
Overall though, Sjunkfjorden is a wild place, situated deep in the heart of Sjunkhatten National Park, and in the shadow of Sjunkhatten mountain - the mountain reminding of a hat, which actually is Norway's 8th most difficult one to climb. I wouldn't advise you to try.
