1. Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine Kyoto
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the head shrine of the god Inari, located in Fushimi Ward in Kyoto, Japan. The shrine sits at the base of a mountain also named Inari which is 233 metres above sea level, and includes trails up the mountain to many smaller shrines which span 4 kilometres and take approximately 2 hours to walk up.First and foremost, Inari is the god of rice, but merchants and manufacturers have traditionally worshiped Inari as the patron of business. Each of the torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha has been donated by a Japanese business. This popular shrine is said to have as many as 32,000 sub-shrines throughout Japan.

Kiyomizu-dera , officially Otowa-san Kiyomizu-dera , is an independent Buddhist temple in eastern Kyoto. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto UNESCO World Heritage site.The place is not to be confused with Kiyomizu-dera in Yasugi, Shimane, which is part of the 33-temple route of the Chūgoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage through western Japan, or the Kiyozumi-dera temple associated with the Buddhist priest Nichiren.

Gion is a district of Kyoto, Japan, originally developed in the Sengoku period, in front of Yasaka Shrine . The district was built to accommodate the needs of travelers and visitors to the shrine. It eventually evolved to become one of the most exclusive and well-known geisha districts in all of Japan. The term Gion is related to Jetavana. The geisha in Kyoto do not refer to themselves as geisha; instead, they use the local term geiko. While the term geisha means artist or person of the arts, the more direct term geiko means essentially a woman of art.

Nanzen-ji , or Zuiryusan Nanzen-ji, formerly Zenrin-ji , is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Emperor Kameyama established it in 1291 on the site of his previous detached palace. The Kyoto International Manga Museum is located in Nakagyō-ku, Kyoto, Japan. The building housing the museum is the former Tatsuike Elementary School. The museum opened on November 25, 2006. Its collection of 300,000 items includes such varieties as Meiji period magazines and postwar rental books. The museum is a public-private partnership of Kyoto Seika University and the city of Kyoto. The city provided the building and land. The university operates the facility under the oversight of a joint committee.

There are a million things to do in Kyoto, but these were my personal favorites from my time in the most historical city in Japan.Here are my 10 best things to do in Kyoto:
** The most important advice I can give is to wake up as early as possible, I mean super early.
1. Rent a bike - this is the best way to beat the tourist traffic in Kyoto.

2. Bamboo Forest - Small forest in the neighboring area of Arashiyama.

3. Fushimi Inari Shrine - It is literally a mountain of hidden shrines, symbolic figurines and a seemingly never-ending pathway to spiritual enlightenment.

4. Ninja Dojo Class - Kyoto is the cultural mecca of Japan, and while you’re here its good to get a taste of that - be it fact or folklore.

5. Kyoto Samurai Experience - As you’ve seen in last week’s video, begin to understand the way of the warrior through samurai training.

6. Imperial Palace - Within Kyoto’s Central Park, is the Imperial Palace. Its a massive campus with pristine gardens and lots of room to do royal things.

7. Kinkaku-ji - “the Golden Pavilion” another expansive grounds centered around this lavish zen buddhist temple.

Kamogawa River
We’re starting at one of Kyoto’s most scenic spots, Kamogawa. Locals have referred to it in the past as Blue Dragon or the river where gods live.
During the Edo period, Kyoto became a gorgeous geisha quarter and the locals often spent time at Kamogawa cooling off at the restaurants and bars on the river and shallows. There used to be about 400 shops back in the day, but were taken away due to levee works and are now being slowly rebuilt since the Showa period.
Worth noting is that Pontocho street runs parallel to this river and you can see many of it’s restaurants extend towards the river with temporary terraces called Seiryotoko. Definitely worth enjoying a meal or drink at one of these spots if you are around during this time.
It’s also perfect afternoon spot in the spring and summer months to have a picnic or a cold beer with friends.
