The Classic Townhouses on Ile-Saint-Louis
Dating back to the seventeenth century, the island's buildings are for the most part townhouses built for members of the rich middle class, many of them officials who worked for Louis XIV. Since those times, the island has had many illustrious residents such as the poet Baudelaire, physicist Marie Curie and Voltaire. In the 1920s it was a favorite haunt of Hemingway.
Definition of Hôtel
Many historic buildings in France have the word Hôtel in their names. This does not mean they are actually hotels; in French hotel often refers to a prestigious single family residence or mansion.
The Hôtel Lauzun (17 quai d'Anjou)
The Hôtel Lauzun is just such a mansion. One of the most beautiful in all of Paris, the mansion is famous for two things: its exquisite baroque interior and its later residents. You can take a guided tour of the mansion every Tuesday. Baudelaire lived here while writing some of the poems of his famous Flowers of Evil (Les Fleurs du mal).
3 quai d'Anjou
The house at 3 quai d'anjou was designed by and the personal residence of Louis Le Vau.
The Hôtel Lambert (1 quai d'Anjou)
Another of Paris' finest mansions is the Hôtel Lambert. In the nineteenth century, the Polish government bought the mansion and welcomed Polish exiles such as the musician Chopin and the poet Adam Mickiewicz, together with their French friends. This mansion had a large garden, which was unusual for a mansion on the island, as there was so little space.
24-26 quai de Bethune - Pompidou Residence
The building at 24-26 quai de Bethune was built on the site of a beautiful mansion also designed by Louis Le Vau. All that is left of the old mansion are the door panels, but they are considered the loveliest doors on the island. This is where the late president of France, Georges Pompidou, lived.
The Polish Library and Adam Mickiewicz Museum (6 quai d'Orléans)
The Polish Library Building also houses three museums in one, the first devoted to the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz, the second to Chopin, and the third to artist Boleslas Biegas. It can be visited on Thursdays.

L'Eglise Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile
The Saint-Louis-en-l'Ile church, designed once again by Le Vau was dedicated to King Louis IX, who after his death was made a saint. The front, hemmed in by buildings, hides a white interior, highly decorated with gilt, and filled with works of art and other treasures. It is a splendid setting for the many concerts given here throughout the year.

Hi guys, Sorry it's been so long...some of you may or may not know that my plans changed direction when the USA decided to refuse me entry into the USA....due to a misdemeanor 13yrs ago i needed to apply for a visa before entering. So i took a flight to Madrid & spent a few weeks relaxing & topping up my tan at Mum & Micks in Coin. I was very well fed & watered & the sun shone everyday reaching temperatures of over 40degrees! I then decided to visit my friend Andy in France,so took the train from Malaga to Madrid, then Madrid to Irun which is on the border of france & Spain & Andy was kind enough to drive 450km to pick me up!! Thankyou so much Andy! Andy lives in a quaint little french village called Couhe & it is surrounded by lots of countyside & fields & fields of sunflowers. We had lots of lovely 3 & 5course lunches & dinners with many of Andy's friends,we took walks in the countryside & visited lots of little villages. We went to a concert in Couhe & also a concert in Cognac where they make all different brands of brandy & we sampled quite a few of them too! We were invited to a BBQ with Robair & many of Andy's friends came also,Sidney & Ilene from England & Debroah from USA. Lots of great food & booze. We also went to visit The Martyr village of Oradour sur Glane where time has stood still since June 10th 1944. A whole village was murdered by the Germans after the war. Very sad but definately worth a visit. Ilene & Sid invited me to spend the day at their B&B to make use of the swimming pool which was much appreciated. We also visited La Vallee des singes which is a beautiful monkey sanctuary with over 30species of monkeys. They are not in cages but roaming freely in the trees where they come down to see us weird tourists. They appear friendly & happy within their enviroment & you can attend feeding times throughout the day. The only thing that seperates you from them is water which apparently they don't like to cross! I have a few days left here & we are heading north a little past Poitiers to stay with a friend of Andy's & then i will take a night Hotel train on Wed eve to Malaga where Mum & Mick will pick me up for another week at theirs to celebrate Mum's birthday & then i will fly to Copenhagen & continue my travels around Europe. Just wanted to add a quick note to say what a wonderful time i had in the countryside in Roche-Posay with Andy, Katy, Lidia & Felix & 4 very beautiful dogs! We stayed up all night long drinking, talking & eating Katy's divine French Crusine, weird & wonderful cheese,s & lots of bubbles. I was made to feel like one of the family. The weather was fantastic & we all went walking with the dogs to a beautiful river for a well needed swim. I will remember you always.xxx Bye for now, will write again soon. Next stop Copenhagen.

Child trailer on Canal Du Midi is not recommended.
Here a small group of German cyclists who stopped by the store. They used their own bikes and equipment to cycle from Toulouse to Beziers (and probably farther) along the Canal Du Midi. We often get requests for baby trailers to do a multi-day trip along the Canal Du Midi. The towpaths are however not wide enough in many places, plus they are also too bumpy in other places. However, people do not believe us when we tell them a baby trailer is not a good idea. Hence, I decided to ask these people about their experience.
