Bellagio, Varenna, Tremezzo - Villages of Lake Como, Italy! The most romantic place on earth

Best app to navigate Italian trains - Trenit

Probably one of the most romantic places on earth is Lake Como (Como Lago) It is absolutely amazing, everywhere you go you have breathtaking views.
It is very easy to get to from Malpensa airport in Milan. You can either take a taxi for aprox 150Euros or save a bundle with the train and ferry. I chose the train and it couldnt have been easier. In terminal 1, I followed the sighns for the train which brought me to their ticket counter. I just told them where I wanted to go and they gave me my tickets. The fastest was to Como Lago is with a stop in Sarrona. This train runs aprox every 20 minutes and is around a 20 minute ride. Then you will grab the Como Lago train, which runs less often, and is an aprox 43 minute ride, ending in Como. I found an amazing app, TRENIT, just search for it in your app store. This app will show you all options for trains as well as platform information. This was awesome because I only had 2 minutes to change trains or I would have to wait for the next one which was 1-2 hours later. So since I knew that I would be arriving on platform 2 and departing on platform 4, I was able to run and made it perfectly. There are plenty of awesome places to stay right there in como, or head to one of the other lake villages. I stayed at Tremezzo, which is just across from Bellagio so I grabbed the ferry. They have the fast ferry with inside seating which only takes about 43 minutes, they also offer the slow ferry, with inside and outside seating. This one takes much longer because it stops at each village on its way.
Once in Tremezzo, I stayed at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, which was AMAZING!!! after I got situated I bought a ferry day pass for only 15EURs which takes you between Lenno, Tremezzo, Bellagio, Varrena and Menaggio. Get off and on as much as you want.
Bellagio is ine of the favorites for most vacationers, but I fell in love with Varrena. You can hike up to the top of the mountain and visit Castela de Vesio, also explore Villa Monestero which offers amazing gardens and views.

TRAVEL TIP: How to Relax in LAKE COMO, ITALY
// ABOUT //
A relaxing week in Northern Italy at Lake Como in the towns of Varenna and Bellagio. This was just what we needed after two months of aggressive sightseeing in Europe. We took a 2 hour and some change train ride from Milano to Varenna. There isn’t a fast train option; therefore you don’t need to book your train in advanced as the train is a regional one. I found booking regional trains online actually cost more than paying upon arrival. And the seating is first come first serve! Being high season, lodging centrally in the lake front town of Varenna was out of our price range so we stepped a few minutes drive outside of Varenna and into the mountains of Perledo. Our terrace looked directly over Lake Como and the view was breathtaking. Walking into town every day was a scenic downhill stroll and an uphill taxi return for 10 euros. Follow the Rick Steves walking tour of Varenna and find yourself at the end of this tour on a tiny beach on the lake. Pack a picnic and soak in the sun. Eat and drink your way back through the town, walking of course. While we were recommended to visit Bellagio, it wasn’t our favourite place to see. We found it too ritzy for our taste. Instead, perhaps a ferry boat ride to Menaggio instead, next time. However, no matter where you are on Lake Como, you’ll find yourself in a state of bliss. Each town has a boat load of history, charm and delicious pasta and wine. Lake Como is the perfect quiet getaway in Italy!
Travel tips:
✔ Don’t book the train in advance (to avoid extra online fees)
✔ Stay in Varenna (it has the most charm)
✔ Book lodging several months in advanced (especially in high season to avoid inflated prices)
✔ Be open to hopping around on the ferries (it’s fun and the three main towns to see are in a triangle connected by lake)
✔ Eat at the train station in Varenna (it was one of our favourite restaurants believe it or now!)
✔ Bring walking shoes (there is a lot to see)
✔ Be leery of restaurants on the water (off the beaten track restaurants are much cheaper and more authentic serving)
