Travel Day 3: I MADE IT! From Toulouse to Agen, to Condom, to Gondrin, France // 018
After a 13-hour plus overnight delay on my second day of travel, I finally can leave Toulouse to head to the small rural town of Gondrin, where I'll be staying on a vineyard for 4 weeks.
After getting the expected rip-off from a taxi to bring me to the train station in Toulouse (30 Euros!), I bought a ticket to Agen and spent the next hour wondering which numbers on my ticket told me which train I needed to be on. Thankfully, about a minute before my train took off, some nice man told me that 1B is on the totally opposite site of the tracks than I was on. Following the guy running in front of me, I jumped on the train about fifteen seconds before it pulled out of the station. About ten minutes into the ride, I realized I was in first class, and kept waiting for a train staff member to pick up by my shirt and toss me off like a cartoon.
No worries, no one even glanced in my direction, let alone at my ticket. I arrived in Agen with over four hours before I needed to catch my bus to Condom, France. I asked the woman near the sign that said gare routiere, (meaning, I hoped, bus station), if there was a bus going to Condom here.
I said Condom? She said not here, in a mix of french words. Sure I was in the right place, I asked, Condom, oui? Or Condom, no? She shook her head and frowned. Eventually, after looking at every sight and google map I could find to see where there might be another bus station in Agen, I realized she meant I couldn't BUY the ticket there. About four hours later, I bought the ticket after I got on the bus.
While I waited in Agen, I decided to trek up a nearby hill with beautiful houses spotted along it. The videos barely so the sights justice. It was more beautiful than I expected. A great spontaneous adventure!
In Condom, I immediately was picked up by Keith, one of the hosts I'm staying with in Gondrin. I was so thankful he spoke English that we chatted along the whole 20-30 minute drive up to the vineyard.
Once on the vineyard, about 7:45pm, June 28th, I was shown the cute caravan/trailer/camper I'd be staying in, and told to get comfortable while they finished up dinner. Soon we all sat down to a beautiful dinner that only Keith would call a quick whip-up, and I told them about the exhausting 50 hours of travel I was so happy to have finished!
