After checking out the 7 castles valley we had another day in Luxemburg. We decided to do the Mullerthal trail, I had heard a lot about it and I must say the scenery is absolutely beautiful! The trail is also called little Switzerland, find out for yourself why.

Clervaux (Luxembourg)
Een bezoek aan het prachtige plaatsje Clervaux in Luxemburg. Het kleine plaatsje ligt in een prachtig dal ingesloten en is vanaf een uitzichtpunt op de doorgaande weg te bekijken. Het heeft 4600 inwoners. Het Kasteel van Clervaux is gedateerd in de 12e eeuw en de 17e eeuw. In het kasteel is een klein oorlogsmuseum gevestigd. Ook is hier de permanente fototentoonstelling The Family of Man, van Edward Steichen. Deze tentoonstelling is reeds in 1955 geopend in het Museum of Modern Art in New York en is sinds 1964 in Clervaux te zien. Sinds 2003 staat hij op de Memory of the world lijst van UNESCO. Het plaatsje heeft zwaar te lijden gehad in de tweede wereldoorlog. Het kasteel is daarna dan ook weer herbouwd. De kerk is van ongeveer 1910.

LUXEMBOURG: Beaufort Castle
The oldest part of the castle of Beaufort dates from the early 11th Century. It was a small square-shaped fortress on a massive rock, surrounded by a wide ditch and a second wall facing the valley.
Around the first half of the 12th Century, a flanking tower was added and the access gate was moved and enlarged.
The House of Beaufort became ruined by the Thirty Year War. Over time the old abandoned knights' castle slowly decayed.
In 1850 the Luxembourg government declared the castle a cultural heritage.
As of 1893 Beaufort castle acquired a new look under the new owner Henri Even and his son Joseph Linckels. The new palace was restored and the sheep farm was expanded.
In 1928 Edmond Linckels cleared the rubble from the castle and the well and made the site available to the public.
Since 1981 the castle and the chateau are owned by the Luxembourg state.

LUXEMBOURG: Echternach town
Echternach, the oldest town in Luxembourg, was founded in 698 by St Willibrord, an English monk from Ripon, Northumbria (in present-day North Yorkshire, England). It lies near the border with Germany.
The picturesque town, still surrounded by its medieval walls with towers, was badly damaged in World War II and has been thoroughly restored.
There are two churches at Echternach. The larger is the Abbey's basilica of St Willibrord, now surrounded by the eighteenth-century abbey (now a school) in the town's historical and cultural centre. The other is the parish church of St Peter and Paul.
