Porsgrunn, Telemark
Video: 12 April 2019
Porsgrunn is a city and municipality in Telemark county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Grenland. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Porsgrunn. The municipality of Porsgrunn was established on 1 January 1838.
Bilfinger Industrial Services Norway AS, Equinor, RHI Normag AS, Porsgrunds Porselænsfabrik, Isola AS, BEHA, Eramet og Norcem er andre viktige industrielle aktører i Porsgrunn.

In 1925, the Hjørring-Hirtshals railway line opened to link the port of Hirtshals with the Danish rail network. In 1966, the harbour was expanded and became one of the largest fishing ports in Denmark.
Until January 1, 2007, Hirtshals was also the seat of Hirtshals Municipality which was merged with existing Hjørring, Løkken-Vrå, and Sindal municipalities to form an enlarged Hjørring Municipality.
Geography[edit]
The nature of Hirtshals: the beach, the cliffs, the North Sea and the history: the bunkers and the lighthouse
Hirtshals is located on the sand and clay promontory Hirtshals, overlooking the Skagerrak between the Jammer Bay and the Tannis Bay. The shoreline is backed by low cliffs, beneath which is a narrow and rocky beach.
Cityscape[edit]
The town's 35 metre high lighthouse, Hirtshals fyr, is a local landmark. Building was begun on June 28th, 1860, and it was first lit on January 1st, 1863. It is constructed of red brick, and covered with Dutch tile.

Memorial in Hirtshals to the crew of lifeboat RF 2, sunk in 1981
The sea level has been as high as 1 meter over the norm. But in days where there is no wind, the waves typically won't be higher than max 20 cm (8 in) over normal sea level.
Due to the proximity of the town to the coast, sea fog is not an uncommon occurrence. In the winter, the air temperature can fall as low as 1.6 degrees, but in the summer, it can reach over 25 degrees Celsius.
Waves[edit]
Hirtshals Havnekontor (Hirtshals' Harbor Office) keeps track of wave periods. On yearly basis wave periods fluctuate between half a second, up to about 9 seconds. According to Hirtshals Havnekontor (Hirtshals' Harbor Office) normal wave heights are between 2 and 2.5 meters.
Wind[edit]
The prevailing wind in Hirtshals is to the south or south-west. Wind speeds vary all year long, usually topping at 10 m/s during the winter.
Economy[edit]

Fishing plays a big role for the town and its inhabitants, as does tourism and the renting of summer homes. Due to the ferry connections with Norway, the shops in Hirtshals thrive on the large number of visitors, especially Norwegians, who shop in the small town all year long.
Culture[edit]
It is the home of one of the largest aquariums in Europe, the Nordsøen Oceanarium. This was built in 1984 as Nordsømuseet, The North Sea Museum, and got its present name after it was extended in 1998 to include a fish tank containing 4,5 million litres of water, making it the largest in northern Europe. The Oceanarium has 70 different species in its collection. A fire in December 2003 destroyed the new extension, but the Nordsøen Oceanarium was rebuilt and reopened on July 22, 2005.

Ferry trip from Høllen, Norway -- Kristiansand Port of Call// Fjords cruise (September)
Sunday morning (September 8th 2013), it was cold and windy and cloudy while arriving in our first Port of Call in NORWAY aboard RCI cruise ship, Vision of the Seas.
At 10:10AM, in Kristiansand, we decided to board the bus # 40 to Høllen (25 minutes trip). Bus ticket = 50 NOK/ person (local currency).
The *bus number 40* will take us to Høllen Brygge (Høllen Pier).
Høllen (located just under 20 kilometers west of Kristiansand) is a small fishing village in the municipality of Søgne in Vest-Agner.
In Høllen, we caught the ferry ride at 10:30AM (that ride takes approx. 75 minutes). Ferry ticket = 100 NOK/ person (local currency)
At 14:51 (or 15:51) you can board the bus # 40 back to Kristiansand (25 minutes trip). Bus ticket = 50 NOK/ person (local currency)
M/B Høllen is the only boat/ferry operating in September (from the Høllen pier in Søgne); it is a lovely trip and well worth a visit (especially in nice weather; there are seating indoor as well if the weather is not cooperating).
This ferry makes a number of stops at local islands.
Ferry - departure times: 10:30 and 16:35.
Ferry schedule:
POC ferry: julianne@hollenbatruter.no
(“To your information we always await for this bus from Kristiansand before departure, so you will make it. The bus stop are on the quay, and you will see the ferry boat from the bus.”)
Bus schedule:
While in Høllen - don't miss a walk down Høllegata (a quaint street with picturesque white timber houses a stroll from the pier).
There is also a gentleman selling fresh crabs from his boat at the dock; a stroll with an ice cream in hand is always good.
(It does seem strange I know, but Norwegians are actually one of the biggest consumers of ice cream in the world, only beaten by the Kiwis)
All the buildings are wooden in a choice of red or white. Figureheads (that have been retired from boat prows) now adorn some of the houses.
There are dogs on leash everywhere along with flowers tucked along fence lines.
