Kuakata (Bengali: কুয়াকাটা) is a town known for its panoramic sea beach. It is located in south-eastern Bangladesh, and is the number two tourist destination in the country. Kuakata beach is a sandy expanse 18 kilometres (11 mi) long and 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) wide. From the beach one can have an unobstructed view of both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal.
Kuakata offers a full view of the sunrise and sunset from the same white sandy beach in the water of the Bay of Bengal. Locally known as Shagor Kannya (Daughter of ocean), the long strip of dark, marbled sand stretches for about 18 kilometres (11 mi). The long and wide beach at Kuakata has a typical natural setting. This sandy beach has gentle slopes into the Bay of Bengal. Kuakata is also a sanctuary for migratory winter birds.
On the eastern end of the beach is Gongamati Reserved Forest, an evergreen mangrove forest and snippet of the original Kuakata. When the Rakhines settled in the area in 1784, Kuakata was part of the larger Sundarbans forest. However, the Sundarbans is now at a distance of one-hour by speed boat. As a mangrove forest, Gongamati, like the Sundarbans, offers some protection against tidal surges, however it too is being threatened by logging and deforestation. The best way to reach the forest is by foot or bike along the beach, where a flock of flag flying fishing boats can be seen trawling the coast. Choosing to visit Gangamati in the late afternoon is a perfect time to watch the sun cast shadows on the abstract exposed mangrove roots.
The name Kuakata originated from the word Kua English word “Well” dug on the sea shore by the early Rakhine settlers in quest of collecting drinking water, who landed on Kuakata coast after getting expelled from the Arakan (Myanmar) by Moughals. Afterwards, it has become a tradition of digging Kua-Well in the neighborhood of Rakhaine tribes for water.

List of Transports that can take you to Kuakata:
Direct bus route from Dhaka to Kuakata. “Sakura” costs around 450 Taka (US $8.00). It leaves every night at 10:30 from the Gabtoli Bus terminal near Technical Mor. A direct BRTC bus service is also available from Dhaka to Kuakata that leaves from Sayedabad Bus terminal at night takes 12 hours to reach Kuakata. These buses are clean and comfortable. Dhaka to Barisal by large river boat locally known as “Launch”. They leave from Dhaka Sadarghat launch terminal between 6 to 9 PM. This comfortable overnight journey to Barisal will cost around 500 to 700 per person in a comfortable cabin (double is around 900 to 1400 taka). You will enjoy the unique beauty of Bangladesh Rivers at nighttime during this journey. If you prefer to camp out on the deck it’s cost about 120 taka. You will arrive Barisal around 5 to 7 AM but you can get off the boat when ever you are comfortable to leave. From Barisal you have to take a local bus to Kuakata. It’s just 90 km but it takes about four to five hours because of the five river ferry on the road. Buses stop in almost every major villages but they aren’t particularly clean or punctual, but are cheap. The fare costs hardly 50-80 taka.
2-3 hour Bike Ride by the Beach:
If you don’t do this you will miss half the fun of Kuakata. I mentioned about the bikes at the beginning of this article. You can hop on any of these bikes (from your hotel or town center) and the driver/guide will take you to some breathtaking places along the beach. This generally covers Kauar Chor, Lebur Chor, Red Crab Beach, mangrove forest etc. But to me the 15-20 kilometer ride along the beach itself was simply the best. You can truly feel the raw beauty of the nature. If you stop at different spots then it can take around 2-4 hours to complete this ride. A bike can carry maximum 2 passengers.
Tourist attraction place:
Sunrise and Sunset from the Beach-Fatra’r Chor-Gangamati Reserved Forest & Jhau Bon-Keranipara, Misripara & Amkholapara Buddhist temples-Kuakata Eco Park (Kuakata Eco Park is at 2.5 km east from the Kuakata zero point)- Lebur Chor-Shutki Polli

Over 400 people belonging to a hundred Rakhain families in coastal districts Patuakhali and Barguna are now
passing busy time, weaving warm cloths ahead of winter season.
We weave different kinds of warm cloths like shawls, sweaters, neckties, and mufflers, in addition to shirt
pieces, lungis, and napkins, using traditional handloom, said Manua, 35, a Rakhain at Mistripara in Kuakata
area. Manua's mother Antheang and brother Ubathen are also engaged in the job, weaving various cloths
round the year and their products are very popular, especially to tourists coming to Kuakata and adjacent
areas. The Rakhain handloom products are sold at different shops in Kuakata of Patuakhali and Taltali of
Barguna district and tourists who visit there especially in the winter season are the main buyers of these items.
Depending on quality and size, a shirt piece sells for Tk 300 to 500, shawl Tk 400 to 800, muffler Tk 170 to 250,
lungi Tk 250 to 400, bag Tk 30 to 400, saree Tk 800 to 1,200, bed sheet Tk 300 to 600.
Warm cloths produced by the Rakhains have special design and patterns and are comfortable to use.
These are cheap too, said Mizanur Rahman, teacher of Bakerganj Government College in Barisal district,
who bought some warm clothes during his visit to Kuakata recently. This correspondent found Rakhain woman Mamache, 25, and her mother Mathuse, 40, weaving a shawl in front of their house at Mistripara.
They run their five-member family with the job.We weave cloth with handloom but we have to compete with
machine-run products. We need electricity-run auto weaving machines to survive the challenge. Besides,
problems like rise of cotton price need to be addressed, said Mathuse.
Price of cotton doubled in last five years. The government should give subsidy for the weaving industry
as many Rakhain families are dependent on it, said Enayet Hossain of Taltali area, who supplies different
types of cotton for the handlooms in Patuakhali and Barguna, after buying the item from Dhaka.
Uchachi Babu, president of Patuakhali district unit of Buddhist Welfare Association, urged the government to
provide financial and technical help to ensure survival of the industry run by over 400 people of around 100
Rakhain families in Patuakhali and Barguna districts.
