Travel tips for Brindisi, Italy:
The city was important in times in war, such as World War II. You’ll notice this when you see the various lookout points, castles and forts.
Due to local safety regulations guests are not permitted to walk inside the port of Brindisi. A free shuttle bus service was provided to take you between the ship and the city center.
Don’t forget to pick up a map at the excursion office. The map they have here is faded. Here are some of the places you can visit.
You don’t need a city tour guide for this town. It’s really small and walkable. I would recommend booking a tour to Lecce. It’s 40 minutes away from Brindisi. The cruise offered a tour for 58.90 euros a person. I didn’t go personally but this town was pretty boring so I feel like any other place might have been better than here.
It’s pretty useless to get dropped off here at 2 when everything is closed for riposo (rest time). The siesta is between noon to 4. The only thing left to do is walk around and look at all the monuments.
The name Brindisi comes from the latin brundisium through the greek brentesion and message brenton meaning “head of deer.” Because of the shape of the port looks like the head of a stag.
Brindisi is part of the beautiful Salento region – the “heel” of the Italian boot. This city is a major port for trade with Greece and the Middle East. Brindisi was an ancient Greek settlement predating the Roman expansion.
Top Sights in Brindisi:
1) Brindisi Cathedral is the main religious structure in the city
2) The Monument to Italian Sailors is one of the most iconic structures in the city.
3) Roman Columns: symbolizes the ending of the road. Only one column survived, and the top was replaced with a copy. The original capital is inside the museum of Nervegna. I’ll show you this later. The other column fell in 1528 only the base and a rock area is left. The other part was given as a gift to the city of Lecce.
4) Casa Del Turista (The Tourist House) This house is built on top of an ancient Roman ruin.
5) Ruins of the Roman Aqueduct - this is close to Porta Mesagne gate. The tanks were collecting drinkable water by means of pipes coming from a place named “Pozzo de Vito” The flow of the water through several tanks allowed natural cleaning of water by decantation before supplying it to town’s fountains.
6) Best Gelato in Brindisi, Italy: Bar Rosso e Nero. Get the Croccantino e Rhum (Crunchy rum) and Nocciola (Hazelnut) with panna (cream). Cost €2,50 = $3.06 US dollars.

If Puglia were a movie, Lecce would be cast in the starring role. Bequeathed with a generous stash of baroque buildings by its 17th-century architects, the city has a completeness and homogeneity that other southern Italian metropolises lack. Indeed, so distinctive is Lecce’s architecture that it has acquired its own moniker, barocco leccese (Lecce baroque), an expressive and hugely decorative incarnation of the genre replete with gargoyles, asparagus columns and cavorting gremlins.
Swooning 18th-century traveller Thomas Ashe thought it 'the most beautiful city in Italy', but the less-impressed Marchese Grimaldi said the facade of Basilica di Santa Croce made him think a lunatic was having a nightmare. Either way, it's a lively, graceful but relaxed university town with some upmarket boutiques, decent Pugliese restaurants, and a strong tradition for papier-mâché making. Both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas are within easy access and it's a great base from which to explore the Salento.
Lecce is a historic city of 95,766 inhabitants (2015) in southern Italy, the capital of the province of Lecce, the second province in the region by population, as well as one of the most important cities of Apulia. It is the main city of the Salentine Peninsula, a sub-peninsula at the heel of the Italian Peninsula and is over 2,000 years old.
Because of the rich Baroque architectural monuments found in the city, Lecce is commonly nicknamed The Florence of the South. The city also has a long traditional affinity with Greek culture going back to its foundation; the Messapii who founded the city are said to have been Cretans in Greek records. To this day, in the Grecìa Salentina, a group of towns not far from Lecce, the griko language is still spoken.
In terms of industry, the Lecce stone a particular kind of limestone is one of the city's main exports, because it is very soft and workable, thus suitable for sculptures. Lecce is also an important agricultural centre, chiefly for its olive oil and wine production, as well as an industrial centre specializing in ceramic production. Vito Fazzi Medical Center is the biggest medical center in Apulia.
According to legend, a city called Sybar existed at the time of the Trojan War, founded by the Messapii. It was conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC, receiving the new name of Lupiae.
Under the emperor Hadrian (2nd century AD) the city was moved 3 kilometres (2 miles) to the northeast, taking the name of Licea or Litium. Lecce had a theater and an amphitheater and was connected to the Hadrian Port (the current San Cataldo). Orontius of Lecce, locally called Sant'Oronzo, is considered to have served as the city's first Christian bishop and is Lecce's patron saint.
Lecce is home to Lega Pro (the third highest football division in Italy) football club U.S. Lecce, who have played 15 seasons in Serie A. Since 1966, they have played at the 33,786-seater Stadio Via del Mare. Lecce experiences a Mediterranean climate (Köppen climate classification Csa) with an average annual temperature of 16.5°C.

Piazza Sant'Oronzo is today the true center of the city. Until the first half of the twentieth century, the appearance of the square was totally different as the Roman amphitheater had not yet been brought to light . In ancient times it was called Piazza dei Mercanti, here were the shops and commercial facilities, in this area on the edge of the historic center and connected, via via Trinchese, via del Mare, and then with San Cataldo and the ancient port .
Since it was decided to highlight the Amphitheater, known through essays made at the end of the nineteenth century by Cosimo de Giorgi, a scholar and passionate local, the appearance of the square slowly begins to change, through the fascist and lateral architecture that accumulate surrounding space. In addition to the Roman amphitheater, some important monuments of the history of Lecce remain in the square.
At the center of the square there is the Sedile , a parallelepiped building, with large pointed arches, rich friezes, with heraldic crests of the city and of Philip III of Spain, trophies, armor, high angular pillars and a large Renaissance loggia in the upper part with three arches-windows bordered by balustrades. What we see is only part of the largest building that housed the offices of the local representative of the King and other local institutions. It was built in 1592 as a hall of hearings and meetings, whose large windows had to be a guarantee and symbol of transparency of public acts by mayor Pietro Mocenico and was the municipal seat until 1851.
The armors recall perhaps the fact that in the rooms behind the loggia the city guarded armor or ammunition. Inside on the walls and the vault were the figures of the patron saints of the city and scenes depicting episodes related to the taking of possession of the Kingdom of Naples by Charles V of Habsburg.
Beside the Seat there is the Church of San Marco , memory of the secular relationships that united the Serenissima in Lecce, which in its walls housed a thriving colony of Venetian merchants and in some of its churches still preserves artistic objects shipped from Venice. The church, with simple Renaissance lines but with a portal full of intaglios, stands on a more ancient chapel dedicated to Saint George and was rebuilt in 1543, with the intervention of Gabriele Riccardi, from the numerous and active Venetian community present in the capital.
The portal is flanked by two columns and a very decorated lintel on which there is a lunette with carved the lion of San Marco, the unmistakable coat of arms of the Serenissima, and higher up a very stained rose window. Once placed on the area of the Amphitheater, the column of Sant'OronzoIt was erected in the mid-seventeenth century by the people of Lecce who wanted to thank the Saint for having put an end to a plague epidemic.
