the script of this video:
Opening
VO:
- when you think about Berlin, cherry blossom is probably not the first thing that pops into your mind. But believe it or not, every year spring, the city Blooms with pink and white Japanese cherry trees, taking away the misery and despair of winter.
Live:
- hey everybody, It’s me Amir. Welcome back to GoOn Berlin.
- I was not aware of the awesome amount of cherry blossom in Berlin until my 3rd year here.
- I think I saw the pink trees every year, but never stop to think about it… because, well, Japanese Sakura trees in Berlin? Really?
Explanation:
VO:
- the Sakura trees in Berlin are still young and not very tall. A clue for how they got here in the first place.
- it’s all started when the Berlin wall came down in 1989, the Japanese took it to heart and the television network Asahi was able to raise donation from countless people across japan, for this beautiful tribute of planting around 10,000 Sakura trees alongside the Berlin. A symbol of peace to celebrate the reunification of Germany.
Where to see?
Live:
- I am standing in my favorite Sakura plantation in Berlin, right next the train station S Bornholmer. On my right side the neighborhood Wedding in west Berlin and to my left Prenzlauer Berg in east Berlin and right here the Berlin wall stood.
VO:
- there are 2 main types of cherry blossom in Berlin, one type blooms earlier and last only a few days. And the 2nd type is in my opinion much more impressive and stays for a bit longer.
By the time this video goes live type A has already wilted and type B is opening up. And you have a chance to go and see for yourself! (just harry up, it will last only until the end of April)
- there are other places in Berlin where you can see the cherry blossom:
- east side gallery, the longest section of the Berlin wall, has two plantations, type A: near the Überbaum bridge and type B: closer to the other side of the gallery, on the side of the river spree. This is also the youngest Sakura plantation in Berlin and the trees are quite small.
- in the northern part of Mauer Park alongside Schwedter strasse and the elevated park next to it, a beautiful plantation of type A.
- The Volkspark am Weinberg is a bit farther away from the wall but there you can find big and beautiful type B trees.
- at Britzer Garten there are enormous white sakura trees, they are quite hidden, so you will have a good excuse to discover every small part of this amazing park.
- At the bridge of spies, Glineker Bruke, you can see the first plantation of the sakura trees in Berlin.
- You can’t make a video about the Sakura in Berlin without talking about the plantation in Teltow / Lichterfelde. Every year a big Hanami festival is taking place in this large and impressive sakura plantation, it’s a bit far from the city center, but worth the visit.
- Another annual event is taking place at the gardens of the world (Gaerten der Welt) in the Marzan neighborhood.
- Today you can see sakura trees all over Berlin, not necessarily alongside the Berlin wall, in Kottbosser tor there are beautiful trees that give this place a unique atmosphere that time of the year. And also, in my back yard there is a Sakura tree, greeting me every time I through my garbage away, lucky me!
Closing
VO:
- I also find a practical use for the Sakura, I like to dry the flowers in salt and use them for cooking white asparagus, the flavor of the salted sakura is very unique, somewhat like almonds and roses but also indescribable: full recipe in the blog (link in the description box).
- last year I took a big bottle of Sake and soaked sakura flowers in it, I was aging this sake for one year and now it’s time to try it out!
Live:
Drinking from the sake and improvising.
