My travels in Peru with Audley Travel
Peru’s high-up-in-the-world Andean scenery is as much a boon as its Inca legacy. You can absorb both on a classic route around Peru that moves from the Spanish conquistador city of Arequipa (where you can adjust to the altitude) to the terraced farmland and alpaca corrals of the Colca Valley. Then, it’s on to Lake Titicaca and finally Machu Picchu.
Helen from Audley visited Peru on a two-week trip and filmed as she went. She started in the white city of Arequipa, where you can tour the Santa Catalina convent — a village in size, whose community of nuns continues a centuries-old tradition of shuttered devotion.
Then, driving into the Andes toward the Colca Valley, you’ll skirt around the active volcanic cone of El Misti and cross the highest road pass in Peru, an offering point for hundreds of stone cairns known as apachetas.
The Colca Canyon is South America’s answer to the Grand Canyon, its edge a reliable viewing platform for watching Andean condors wheeling above you and riding the thermals in search of carrion.
From nearby Chivay, you can travel onto Puno on the edge of Lake Titicaca. A half-hour boat ride from shore, the Uros people live on floating reed islands on the lake. During a visit, you can see their reed-constructed homes and take a ride on one of their trademark high-prowed boats.
A day-long train or bus ride across Peru’s altiplano brings you to Cuzco, the old Inca capital. It’s a compact, walkable city, where you’ll see two styles of building in its walls — the precision stonework of the Inca overlaid with less quake-resistant colonial stone courses.
Cuzco is your entry point into the Sacred Valley, the Inca farmland, and — the finale ultimo of your trip to Peru — Machu Picchu.
