174-million-year-old ‘Amazing Dragon’ dinosaur discovered in China
174-million-year-old ‘Amazing Dragon’ dinosaur discovered in China:
Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos:
Ferocious carnivores like the Tyrannosaurus tend to take top billing when it comes to dinosaur pop culture, but the colossal plant-eaters known as sauropods are just as worthy of acclaim. This group of long-necked beasts include the brachiosaurus, brontosaurus, apatosaurus, and diplodocus as well as many others, and paleontologists in China are now ready to add another new species to the list. The creature’s long-still bones were discovered in a handful of different fossil sites in China, and with as many as 10 partial skeletons to draw from, researchers have been able to classify it as a new species. It has been named Lingwulong shenqui, which roughly translates to “the amazing dragon of Lingwu.” Don't Miss: Today’s top deals: $31 home cam, Instant Pot, Philips Hue at Prime Day price, sous vide, more The dinosaur wasn’t quite as large as others in the sauropod group, but it still would have been an impressive creature to see in person. It is thought to have measured between 35 and 55 feet in length, and like most sauropods it would have spent the majority of its days traveling in small groups and munching on vegetation. But what’s so special about this particular dinosaur to warrant the “amazing” tag? Well, that part is still up for debate. The dinosaur is thought to be unique in that it is the first member of its evolutionary family (Diplodocoidea) to be discovered in East Asia. “The new discovery challenges conventional biogeographical ideas, and suggests that dispersal into East Asia occurred much earlier than expected,” the researchers write. “Moreover, the age of this new taxon indicates that many advanced sauropod lineages originated at least 15 million years earlier than previously realised, achieving a global distribution while Pangaea was still a coherent landmass.” Classifying animals that have been dead for 174 million years is a tricky thing. Just where this species sits on the family tree is still being discussed, but if it is indeed a member of the diplodocoid family, it could seriously shake up how paleontologists understand the spread of these types of dinosaurs back when the Earth had one massive landmass rather than separate continents. Gyeonggi Philharmonic led by Korea's first woman chief conductor Sung Shi-yeon to perform Mahler...
The first female chief conductor of a Korean public orchestra will lead her very first regular performance this week.
Sung Shi-yeon took the reins of the Gyeonggi Phil-harmonic Orchestra... earlier this year.
Our Park Ji-won has more.
The Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra is busy rehearsing for its first regular concert this year... where they will perform Mahler Symphony No. 2 Resurrection.
The orchestra is receiving an unusual amount of media attention these days... because of its music director Sung Shi-yeon.
When she was appointed to the position earlier this year, she became Korea's first-ever female chief conductor in charge of leading a public orchestra.
Blazing trails is nothing new for Sung.
In 2006, she became the first woman ever to win the prestigious Sir Georg Solti International Conductors' Competition in Germany.
She followed that honor up the next year by winning the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition,... and has worked as the first woman assistant conductor at the Boston Symphony in the United States.
She was also the assistant conductor at the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra up until last year.
The 38-year old is well-known on the international music scene,... for her ability to balance orchestral sound.
She explains why she chose Mahler's symphony No. 2 Resurrection as the Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra's first regular concert of 2014.
The Mahler symphony is majestic and magnificent in its character,... and it demands a lot of practice. I wanted to show that the philharmonic is entering a new phase,... and show the audience our new determination.
The Gyeonggi Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1997,... and is full of youthful energy.
The average age of its members stands at just 34.
During my two years as music director,... improving the overall sound of the orchestra is my first priority. I also hope to present good performances by the Gyeonggi Philharmonic on the global music scene.
The Gyeonggi Philharmonic's Mahler Symphony No. 2 concert will be held at 8 p.m. on Thursday at Seoul Arts Center.

'Mud Dragon' dinosaur unearthed in China
'Mud Dragon' dinosaur unearthed in China.
A new species of bird–like dinosaur was recently discovered at a construction site in Southern China. Dubbed Tongtianlong limosus, the winged creature had died after becoming mired in mud about 66–72 million years ago– hence it’s nickname, the ‘Mud Dragon.’
Before the well–preserved and near–complete skeleton was discovered, it had been damaged by dynamite while workmen were excavating a school near Ganzhou. Luckily, the workers found it before any more damage had been done.
“They very nearly dynamited it into billions of pieces, but thankfully they placed the dynamite just far enough away from the skeleton that most of it survived the blast,” study co–author Dr. Steve Brusatte of the University of Edinburgh told FoxNews.com. “I wasn't there when it was found, but they must have realized right away that they had found something important, and it's great that the fossil was conserved by a museum rather than sold off or auctioned away, where it would have been lost to science forever.”
The skeleton of the two–legged Tongtianlong limosus was lying on its back with its neck arched and wings outstretched. It also had a crest of bone on its head that researchers believed may have been used to attract mates or intimidate enemies.
Tongtianlong is the sixth species of the oviraptorosaur dinosaur family, a group of feathered dinos known for their sharp beaks and short, toothless heads. Oviraptors were thriving in the 15 million years before the comet that killed the dinosaurs hit Mexico, and Brusatte believes that the most important thing about the new fossil is that it gives us a glimpse of these last surviving dinosaurs.
“They were still diversifying during those last few million years of the Cretaceous, so they are a sign that dinosaurs were still doing really well right up towards the end,” the paleontologist said. “It was these dinosaurs that were undergoing the final wave of diversification before everything changed that day the asteroid hit.”
Despite its wings, the Mud Dragon was flightless so it had to rely on its feet to get away from predators such as the big tyrannosaur Qianzhousaurus, which was the top predator in the area at the time. It also had different feeding habits than a lot of its fellow dinosaurs.
“The Mud Dragon didn't have teeth, but rather a beak, so it wasn't a traditional meat eater,” Brusatte explained. “It may have eaten small mammals and lizards, but probably also plants, seeds, nuts, shellfish–all kinds of things. It was a classic omnivore, which is maybe one reason that these dinosaurs were so diverse and successful, because they could eat so many things.”
There’s been a wave of dinosaur finds over the last few years in China, with many new dinosaur discoveries emerging from the country every year. Brusatte said that things don’t look to be slowing down, either.
“Many of these discoveries are not found by professors or academic scientists with PhDs, but by farmers and workmen. This new discovery is a prime example of that. We would never know about it had there not been a building boom in southern China, had these workmen not been on the job that day, or had they not used just the right amount of dynamite to free the skeleton but not destroy it.”

Especially since those desert areas which had comparatively decent conditions have already been controlled. What we need to deal with now are the much more difficult areas - the higher density desert areas. We'll need more investment as the costs are high, more labour forces the environment is really exhausting. It is getting harder and harder to make progress. But we have better technology now and are even more determined. We have more experience now in sand control. We have more determination and confidence.

Leslie Cheung - A Chinese Ghost Story (Cantonese version) 倩女幽魂 - 张国荣 1987
It is interesting to compare Leslie's Mandarin singing of the song to his Cantonese singing of it. Here is his Mandarin version and here is a TV performance of it in 1987, part of which you can see at Leslie really has an electrifying presence. You can watch the film itself at Dawn, Please Don't Come sung by Sally Yeh is also featured in the film. It is sung when the hero and the ghost make love for the first time. It begs the dawn not to come, because as soon as it does, the ghost must leave him and return to the Tree Demon. The film was released on 18 July 1987 in Hong Kong. It was based on The Magic Sword, a short story written 500 years ago by Pu Song Ling. It was directed by Ching Siu-tung. Leslie Cheung is Ning Choi-san, Joey Wong is Nip Siu-sin , Wu Ma is Yin Chik-ha, Lau Siu-ming is the Tree Demon, and Lam Wai is Hah Hau, a rival swordsman.
The film plot is as follows: Ning Choi-san (Leslie Cheung) is a timid debt collector who takes shelter in a deserted temple in the forest where he meets a beautiful lady called Nip Siu-sin. He falls in love with her but then discovers that Nip is actually a ghost, forced to lure young men to their death for the Tree Demoness who feeds off their yang energy. Nip tells him how she is eternally bound to serve the Tree Demoness, as long as her remains are buried at the foot of the tree. Ning tries to free her from her suffering, and seeks the help of a Taoist priest, master swordsman, and ghost-hunter called Yin Chik-ha. Yin fights the Tree Demoness but fails to free Nip's soul which is taken to the underworld. Ning and Yin enter the underworld, and eventually find her. Ning and Nip see each other briefly when they are able to return. She tells Ning that the only way to save her soul is to place her remains in a new place before she returns to the darkness. Ning follows her instructions and with Yin's help, Ning buries Nip's remains near the top of a hill.
Leslie Cheung (Zhang Guorong) was born Cheung Fat-chung (張發宗) in Hong Kong on Sept 12, 1956 to Cheung Wut-hoi, a tailor, and Poon Yuk-yiu. The youngest of ten children in a middle-class Hakka family with ancestry from Meizhou, Guangdong. His parents divorced when he was quite young. At the age of 12, he was sent to Norwich School in England. He later worked as a bartender at his relatives' restaurant in Southend-on-Sea, and sang during the weekends. He chose his name, Leslie, because I love the film Gone with the Wind. And I like Leslie Howard. He attended Leeds University where he studied textile management but his time there was cut short as he returned to HK to help his father who was ill.
As well as being a much-loved singer, he was ranked as the favourite actor in the 100 years of Chinese cinema. In 2010, he was voted the third Most Iconic Musicians of All Time (after Michael Jackson and The Beatles). Leslie committed suicide on April 1, 2003 by jumping off the 24th floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Hong Kong. His suicide note in translation: Depression! Many thanks to all my friends. Many thanks to Professor Felice Lieh-Mak (Leslie's last psychiatrist). This year has been so tough. I can't stand it anymore. Many thanks to Mr. Tong. Many thanks to my family. Many thanks to Sister Fei. In my life I have done nothing bad. Why does it have to be like this? Bless you Leslie, and thank you for the treasures you gave us.

A Chinese Ghost Story
Lyrics and Music by Huang Zhan
English Translation
Life is a dream like a long road
Wind and frost on the road
In the red dust
How many dreams do you have?
Find a Dream full of Love
The road is boundless
Life is a dream and a longing
A faint tear in my dream
Where did you go?
To find My way
The wind seems to sigh in the dream
The road is boundless
Happy young man on the road
The road is rugged but sunny.
How many directions are there in the dust
A glimmer of wind and rain
The road is boundless
A glimmer of wind and rain
The road is boundless

Hot air Balloon Festival
A hot-air balloon festival has opened to public recently in Lingwu City in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Over 100 pilots with 32 hot-air balloons along with six delta wing aircraft have taken part in the week-long event starting from July 31 in the Baijitan National Desert Park. As part of the festival, the hot-air balloon flight competition is one of the most eye-catching activities for visitors from around the country. People say, throughout your life, you may never fly a hot-air balloon on one same track once again. So, each flight for me is full of novelty and unknown, said Cheng Peng, a hot-air balloon pilot with 14 years of experience. Apart from watching the competition and exhibits during the festival, visitors can also board the hot-air balloons and the delta wing aircraft to take a bird's eye view of the breathtaking scenery of the park. I came from Zhengzhou City to watch the flight of hot-air balloons. I thought I wouldn't be brave enough to take such a flight. But the moment I got on it, I found it very interesting. The balloons are hot, the weather is hot, and the locals are so friendly, said a visitor surnamed Wu from central China's Henan Province. Another tourist called Wu Liping who experienced flight with delta wing aircraft shared the similar happiness and excitement. I thought this place would be something like a desert. And I felt so lucky to experience the delta wing plane today. I looked down at the whole Baijitan desert park and found the vegetation here is so great. I felt it just a miracle, an oasis in the desert, she said.
