Our Lady of the Isles is a sculpture of the Virgin Mary, on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. The statue is situated on the western slopes of Ruabhal, a hill near the northern end of South Uist. It is to the east of the A865 road, and a paved path runs from the road to the statue. The statue was commissioned following proposals from the Ministry of Defence for a large missile testing range. This would have covered much of Uist, and involved construction of a military town as well as facilities for building missiles. This caused concern it would destroy much of the island's way of life, culture and language. Resistance to the proposals was led by Canon John Morrison, the local parish priest. Oban is a resort town within the Argyll and Bute council area of Scotland. Despite its small size, Oban is the largest town between Helensburgh and Fort William. During the tourist season, the town of Oban can play host to up to 25,000 people.

Oban occupies a setting in the Firth of Lorn. The bay is a near perfect horseshoe, protected by the island of Kerrera; and beyond Kerrera, the Isle of Mull. To the north, is the long low island of Lismore, and the mountains of Morvern and Ardgour.

The area around Oban is rich with attractions for tourists, from the dramatic scenery of the coast and mountains to the fascinating histories of the local castles and ancient religious sites. There are also many activities available for families and those interested in more active pursuits. The Oban and Lorn tourist information website has detailed information for visitors. The Oban Visitor Information Centre, operated by VisitScotland, is located in the Columba Buildings on the North Pier.

Oban lies at the western end of the A85 road. It also has a railway station from where a number of Abellio ScotRail trains run to and from Glasgow Queen Street daily. The town is also an important ferry port: it is Caledonian MacBrayne's busiest terminal. Oban is known as the Gateway to the Isles, with ferries sailing to the islands of Lismore, Colonsay, Islay, Coll, Tiree, to Craignure on Mull, to Castlebay on Barra and to Lochboisdale on South Uist. In 2005, a new ferry terminal was opened, and in 2007 a second linkspan opened, allowing two vessels to load/unload at the same time.

Traveling through Edinburgh, Scotland

This is the first vlog of my adventures through Europe. This one starts in NYC but is based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is a very cool city in Scotland famous for its castle and good viewpoints. I am here because it is the cheapest place to fly into Europe to travel around. This city has a very down to earth atmosphere, but it is quite rainy. So, if you don't like rain, do not plan such a long trip here. I stayed in Kick Ass Hostels which is only about $13 a night if you are trying to travel on the cheap. At that price, I could stay here a whole month and never leave (because wifi, bar, food, and cafe inside) for the cost of living in my house in Texas. With this trip, I plan on heading through Europe to see some old friends and new places. I will be going to Amsterdam, Brussels, Stuttgart, Catania, and Oslo for sure on this trip. I am in no hurry, so they may not be all in a row. My reason for coming on this trip, was 1. to get a little adventure and get out the house to go where all the people and money is... outside or traveling. And 2. to find a cheap place (perhaps Budapest) to settle down for a bit and work on a digital advertising business called Hearten Marketing where I intend to help small business owners grow their businesses to hit there goals and gain more freedom to live life.
