Loei , in Isan, is one of the most sparsely populated provinces of Thailand. Neighboring provinces are Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Nongbua Lamphu, Khon Kaen, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok. In the north it borders Xaignabouli and Vientiane Province of Laos. The city of Loei is surrounded by mountain ranges whose summits are covered by fog and abundant with varied flora. The best known mountains in the province are Phu Kradueng, Phu Luang, and Phu Ruea.

    Nam Nao National Park is a protected area in Nam Nao District, Phetchabun Province in northern Thailand. It is 55 kilometres east of Lom Sak District. The park is a large forest still in its original state. It is filled with pineries, grasslands, and jungle. The park is home to more than 100 species of birds. The average annual temperature is 25 degrees Celsius. Between December and January temperatures drop to as low as 2-5 degrees Celsius. Nam Nao National Park is part of a Level I tiger conservation unit . It encompasses 1,000 square kilometres .

    Phu Wiang National Park is located in Phu Wiang District, Khon Kaen Province, northeastern Thailand. It is best known for its numerous dinosaur bone paleontological sites, The park is one of the world's largest dinosaur graveyards. In 1996, the remains of Siamotyrannus isanensis, a new family of carnivorous thunder lizards, were unearthed in the park. The Phu Wiang Dinosaur Museum is situated within the park and displays many of the park's finds. The park, measuring 325 square kilometres in size, is located approximately 85 kilometres northwest of Khon Kaen. The area is characterized by a central plain and the low hills of the western Phu Phan Mountains.

    Phu Soi Dao National Park , named after 2,120 m high Phu Soi Dao mountain, is a protected area at the southern end of the Luang Prabang Range in the Thai/Lao border area, on the Thai side of the range. It is located in Chat Trakan District of Phitsanulok and Nam Pat District of Uttaradit Provinces. The park was established as Thailand's 109th national park in 2008.Phu Soi Dao waterfall and Saithip waterfall are some of the attractions of the park. The landscape is similar to the area on the Phu Kradueng plateau further southeast, with grasslands and pine trees such as Pinus kesiya. Betula alnoides, Schima wallichii and Shorea siamensis are among the other species of trees present in the forest. Utricularia spinomarginata and Utricularia phusoidaoensis are endemic plants on Phu Soi Dao.
