The Abbey of Lorsch is a former Imperial abbey in Lorsch, Germany, about 10 km east of Worms.
It was one of the most renowned monasteries of the Carolingian Empire.
Even in its ruined state, its remains are among the most important pre-Romanesque–Carolingian style buildings in Germany.
Its chronicle, entered in the Lorscher Codex compiled in the 1170s is a fundamental document for early medieval German history.
Another famous document from the monastic library is the Codex Aureus of Lorsch.
In 1991 the ruined abbey was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The abbey was founded in 764 by the Frankish Count Cancor and his widowed mother Williswinda as a proprietary church and monastery on their estate, Laurissa.
It was dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
The founders entrusted its government to Cancor's nephew Chrodegang, Archbishop of Metz, who became its first abbot.
The pious founders enriched the new abbey by further donations.
To make the abbey popular as a shrine and a place of pilgrimage, Chrodegang obtained from Pope Paul I the body of Saint Nazarius, martyred at Rome with three companions under Diocletian.
In 1248 Premonstratensian monks from Allerheiligen were given charge of the monastery with the sanction of Pope Celestine IV.
During the Thirty Years' War Lorsch and its neighbourhood suffered greatly.
In 1621, Spanish troops pillaged the abbey and most of the buildings at Lorsch were pulled down.
After the Archbishopric of Mainz regained possession of it in 1623, the region was returned to the Catholic faith.
However, the abbey remained a ruin and served as a source of building materials for the whole region.
The most depressed period for Lorsch was during the wars of Louis XIV of France in the late 17th century.
Whole villages in the region were laid in ruins, the homes of the peasantry were burned, and the French soldiers torched the old abbey buildings.
One portion, which was left intact, served as a tobacco warehouse in the years before World War I.
The ancient entrance hall, the Königshalle or aula regia, built in the ninth century by King Louis II, is the oldest monument of Carolingian architecture.

Marienplatz (Mary's Square) is a central square in the city centre of Munich, Germany.
It has been the city's main square since 1158.
Marienplatz was named after the Mariensäule, a Marian column erected in its centre in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation.
Today the Marienplatz is dominated by the New City Hall (Neues Rathaus) on the north side, and the Old City Hall (Altes Rathaus, a reconstructed council hall with a ballroom and tower) on the east side.
In the Middle Ages, markets and tournaments were held in this city square.
The Glockenspiel in the tower of the new city hall was inspired by these tournaments, and draws millions of tourists a year.
Furthermore, the pedestrian zone between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz is a crowded area with numerous shops and restaurants.
The Mariensäule is a Marian column located on the Marienplatz in Munich, Germany.
Mary is revered here as Patrona Bavariae.
It was erected in 1638 to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War, to be precise, following a respective vow by Duke Elector Maximilian I of Bavaria if the ducal residential cities of Munich and Landshut would be spared from war destruction.
The column is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon as the Queen of Heaven, created in 1590.
The figure was originally located in the Frauenkirche.
Mariensäule in Munich was the first column of this type built north of the Alps and inspired erecting other Marian columns in this part of Europe.
At each corner of the column's pedestal is a statue of a putto, created by Ferdinand Murmann.
The four putti are each depicted fighting a different beast, symbolizing the city's overcoming of adversities: war represented by the lion, pestilence by the cockatrice, hunger or famine by the dragon and heresy by the serpent.
Three weeks before Christmas the Christkindlmarkt opens at Marienplatz and other squares in the city, selling Christmas goods and food and drink.

Mainau is an island in Lake Constance (on the south shore of the Überlinger See near the city of Konstanz, Baden-Württemberg, Germany).
It is maintained as a garden island and a model of excellent environmental practices.
Administratively, the island has been a part of Konstanz since December 1, 1971, when the municipality of Litzelstetten, of which Mainau was part, was incorporated into Konstanz.
Mainau is still part of Litzelstetten, now one of 15 wards of Konstanz.
The island belongs to the Lennart Bernadotte-Stiftung , an entity created by Prince Lennart Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg, originally a Prince of Sweden and Duke of Småland.
It is one of the main tourist attractions of Lake Constance.
Beside flowers there is a park landscape with views on the lake.
There is also a greenhouse with tropical climate and thousands of butterflies.
Mainau Bay is the location of the university sailing club.
Until the Napoleonic mediatisations and secularisations of small German fiefs this island belonged to the Order of Teutonic Knights.
It was later sold into private ownership.
In 1853 Grand Duke Frederick I of Baden purchased the island as his personal property and used the palace built by the Teutonic Knights as summer palace.
Mainau is a flowering island notable for its parks and gardens.
Frederick I, Grand Duke of Baden, created the island's arboretum, which now contains 500 species of deciduous and coniferous trees, many exotic and valuable, including fine specimens of Sequoiadendron giganteum (1864) and Metasequoia glyptostroboides (1952).
The island also contains about 200 rhododendron and azalea varieties.
The Italian Rose Garden laid out geometrically with pergolas, sculptures, and fountains, and includes some 500 rose varieties.
The Mediterranean terraces contain exotic pot plants, including palm trees, agaves, cacti, and bougainvillea.
The island as a whole contains about 30,000 rose bushes representing 1,200 varieties, and about 20,000 dahlias of 250 varieties.

Reichenau Island is an island in Lake Constance in southern Germany.
It lies almost due west of the city of Konstanz, between the Gnadensee and the Untersee, two parts of Lake Constance.
With a total land surface of 4.3 square kilometres and a circumference of 11 kilometres, the island is 4.5 kilometres long and 1.5 kilometres wide at its greatest extent.
The highest point, the Hochwart, stands some 43 metres above the lake surface and 438.7 metres above mean sea level.
Reichenau is connected to the mainland by a causeway, completed in 1838, which is intersected between the ruins of Schopflen Castle and the eastern end of Reichenau Island by a 10-metre-wide and 95-metre long waterway, the Bruckgraben.
A low road bridge allows the passage of ordinary boats but not of sailing-boats.
The island was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000 because of its monastery, the Abbey of Reichenau.
The Abbey stood along a main north–south highway between Germany and Italy, where the lake passage eased the arduous route.
The Abbey of Reichenau housed a school, and a scriptorium and artists' workshop, that has a claim to having been the largest and artistically most influential centre for producing lavishly illuminated manuscripts in Europe during the late 10th and early 11th centuries, often known as the Reichenau School.
The abbey's Münster (minster church) is dedicated to the Virgin and Saint Mark.
Two further churches were built on the island consecrated to Saint George and to Saints Peter and Paul.
The famous artworks of Reichenau include (in the church of St George) the Ottonian murals of miracles of Christ, unique survivals from the 10th century.
The abbey's bailiff was housed in a two-storey stone building to which two more storeys of timber framing were added in the 14th century, one of the oldest timber-frame buildings in south Germany.
Among the Abbey's far-flung landholdings was Reichenau, a village on the upper Rhine in the municipality of Tamins in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, named for the Abbey.
Today the island is also famous for its vegetable farms.
The Wollmatinger Ried next to the island is a large nature preserve, a wetland area of reeds which is used by many birds as a stopover during their annual migration.

Michelstadt in the Odenwald is a town in the Odenwaldkreis (district) in southern Hesse, Germany between Darmstadt and Heidelberg.
Michelstadt had its first documentary mention in 741 from Mayor of the Palace Carloman, Charlemagne’s uncle.
Michelstadt is one of the oldest settlements in the inner Odenwald.
Its castle grew out of a Frankish baronial estate.
This was built into a refuge for the local inhabitants.
As a royal estate, Prince Carloman donated it in 741 to Saint Boniface’s pupil Burchard, the first Bishop of Würzburg.
This donation was apparently meant for Bishop Burchard personally, for the Michelnstat area passed back to the Frankish Crown upon Burchard’s death in 791.
Timber-frame house at the marketplace with the market well
In 815, the Michlinstat area was donated once again.
Einhard also built the Einhardsbasilika.
In 819, he bequeathed his Odenwald holdings to Lorsch Abbey and in so doing precisely defined the boundaries of the Mark Michelstadt.
Upon Einhard’s death on 14 March 840, the monastery came into its inheritance.
In the 17th century, the first houses outside the town wall were built.
In 1773, a new town gate was built, called the Neutor (“New Gate”).
Out of what was once a small farming community grew a sizeable town with important industrial operations on the foundation of the centuries-old ironworking.
A new economic era began.
From the clothweavers’ and dyers’ guild grew a cloth factory; from foundries grew machine factories.
Ivory carving was a starting point for businesses in the souvenir industry and plastics processing.
Michelstadt's Old Town features many timber-frame houses.
Particularly worthy of mention are the following buildings, some within the old town, others in the surrounding countryside: The historic Town Hall, the Diebsturm (Thief's Tower) at the town wall, the Kellereihof (a Frankish, early mediaeval castle complex refurbished in an early Renaissance style) in the town wall ring, the late Gothic town church (late 13th century), the Einhards-Basilika, the palace of the Counts at Erbach-Fürstenau (Schloss Fürstenau, within which are parts of an old moated castle in Michelstadt-Steinbach), Jagdschloss Eulbach with an English landscape garden and a Roman bath and castra, formerly part of the Neckar-Odenwald Limes.

Speyer. Medieval city centre | Germany #4
Video tour through the medieval town of Speyer. One of Germany's oldest towns. The city is dominated by the Old Town Gate (Altpörtel) and the Romanesque Cathedral with its restored nineteenth-century westwork. After walking down the main street (Maximillianstraße) we enter the Cathedral. A number of German emperors are buried in the crypt, the most famous being Henry IV, who walked the Road to Canossa to ask the Pope for forgiveness after he was excommunicated during the Investiture Controversy (1077). After visiting the Cathedral, we climb the tower to have great views over the old town and the Rhine valley.
