Just a two-hour drive from Los Angeles and a scenic four-hour jaunt from San Francisco, the Santa Ynez Valley is already home to more than 100 world-class wineries and a creative and eclectic culinary scene that is steeped in the farm-to-table movement.
There are also some really incredible unique wine tasting opportunities like horseback riding and combined with yoga class.

Santa Ynez, California is an unexpectedly laid back and inviting place to visit in California. The Santa Ynez Valley is comprised of a few very small neighboring towns that have an old school American vibe to most of. Except for Solvang, that town looks like it was plucked right off the streets of Copenhagen, making it a quirky and fun place to stay for a few days.
One minute you are driving past lakes and trees, and the next minute it's all cattle ranches and vineyards. That's how unexpected a trip here can be. Only about an hour and a half outside of Los Angeles, you wouldn't think that California could change so much so fast.

The highlight of our Pacific Highway Road Trip was Whale Watching in Santa Barbara California. Santa Barbara is a stunning coastal location just 2 hours drive north of Los Angeles. And it has some of the most prolific marine life anywhere.
Join us as we board the Condor Express for some whale watching action just off the coast of Santa Barbara. Here we found the extremely deep Santa Barbara Channel and the Channel Islands. The Condor Express took us straight to a humpback whale feeding frenzy, where we also spotted thousands of dolphins, sea lions, and sea birds. Even a Mako shark and an old sailing ship!
This is one day we will never forget off Santa Barbara California.

In 1850, when California gained statehood, the rich soil drew farmers and other settlers, and the Santa Maria River Valley became one of the most productive agricultural areas in the state. Agriculture is still a key component of the economy for the city and the entire region.
Between 1869 and 1874, four of the valley's prominent settlers, Rudolph Cook, John Thornburg, Isaac Fesler (after whom Fesler Jr. High School is named), and Isaac Miller, farmed the land that today corners on Broadway and Main Street. The townsite map was recorded in Santa Barbara in 1875. The new city was first called Grangerville, then Central City. The city's name was changed to Santa Maria on February 18, 1885, because mail for the community was being sent by mistake to Central City, Colorado. Santa Maria comes from the name that settler Juan Pacifico Ontiveros had given to his property 25 years earlier.
The Santa Maria Valley saw oil exploration begin in 1888, leading to large-scale discoveries around the turn of the century. In 1901, Union Oil discovered the large Orcutt Oil Field in the Solomon Hills south of town, and along with a number of smaller companies began pumping oil. By the end of 1903, Union Oil had 22 wells in production. Several significant discoveries followed. In the next 80 years several large oil fields were found, and thousands of oil wells were drilled and put into production in the area. Oil development intensified in 1930s, with the discovery of the Santa Maria Valley Oil Field right underneath the southern and western parts of the city of Santa Maria, which spurred the City's growth even further.[3][not in citation given] By 1957 there were 1,775 oil wells in operation in the Santa Maria Valley, producing more than $640 million worth of oil.
