Ziro is a census town in Lower Subansiri district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. It has been a favorite town for World Heritage Site for a number of years now. In a meeting of Archeological Survey of India (ASI) on December 12, 2012 it was shortlisted for inclusion in Tentative List for further nomination to UNESCO for inscription in the World Heritage Site. Ziro town is also the district headquarter of Lower Subansiri district and is one of the oldest towns in Arunachal Pradesh. It was the headquarters of the undivided Subansiri district comprising the present districts of Upper Subsansiri, Kurung Kumey, Lower Subansiri and Papum Pare. It is located at 27.63°N 93.83°E at an elevation of 1688 metres (5538 feet) to 2438 meters (8000 feet). Its cool weather in summer is its major attraction. It is famous for its pine clad gentle hills around it and rice field all around. Ziro is home to the Apa-Tani tribe.
Ziro has highest numbers of Schools in Arunachal Pradesh. There are more than hundred private and Government Schools and one college run by Claretian Missionaries. Ziro has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 60%. The town is famous for its Paddy cum fish culture, Tarin fish farm, Ziro Putu, Shiva Linga at Kardo, Talley Valley and don't forget to taste Tapyo Salt - a Must Taste.
Arunachal Pradesh attained its statehood on 20th February 1987. It is situated in the North-Eastern part of India with 83743 sq. kms area and has a long international border with Bhutan to the west (160 km), China to the north and north-east (1,080 km) and Myanmar to the east (440 km). It stretches from snow-capped mountains in the north to the plains of Brahmaputra valley in the south. Arunachal is the largest state area-wise in the north-east region, even larger than Assam which is the most populous. It is situated between latitude 26° 30' N and 29° 30 ' N and longitude 91° 30' E and 97° 30' E. Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh and located at an altitude of 530 meters above MSL. It is named after Itafort meaning fort of bricks built in 14th century A.D.

Yazali town, Arunachal Pradesh
Yazali - Hidden in a green valley surrounded by the natural beauty of the forest. A small town located in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh in North-East India. It is a peaceful and picturesque haven blanketed in the natural beauty of sub-tropical forests with lush green hills.
Yazali lies 142 km away from Itanagar, the Capital of Arunachal Pradesh and is situated between Ziro and Itanagar. Just before reaching Yazali one can see the huge Ranganadi Dam. The Ranganadi River becomes narrow as it enters the valley of Yazali, gradually becoming the Panyor River which is also one of the major tributaries of the majestic Brahmaputra. Blessed with natural resources and rich in biodiversity, Yazali is home to the Nyishi tribe. A tribe that believes that they descend from the Abotani, their mythical forefathers. Like most of the tribes of north-east India, the Nyishi are nature worshippers and follow the Donyi Polo religion.
Yazali has both a favourable climate and soil, suitable for Horticultural crops of mainly oranges and bananas which grow in abundance in vast areas of the forested land. People here are mainly involved in fishing and the rice cultivation. It is the staple diet of the locals and is supplemented with leafy vegetables and meat. Bamboo is a prime resource used for everything from the construction of houses to being eaten as well as being used as a vessel to cook in.
Life in Yazali is quite simple. People love to showcase their colourful culture which is reflected in their festivals. Traditionally rich in culture, people here still prefer to live in Bamboo shaft houses which are 2 to 3 feet above the ground level. Each house has its own small in-house fireplace built right in the centre of the room in a square shape. The houses are not too far from each other and are basically clustered in small groups. The view of the little huts scattered over a plain area along with the Panyor River flowing across the heart of Yazali, surrounded by hills is truly amazing.
The Panyor is the river that flows down from Mengio in Papum Pare narrowing down until it reaches Yazali in Lower Subansiri District. From Ranganadi Dam, the river is known as Ranganadi till it meets the Brahmaputra in Assam beyond North Lakhimpur. A viewer clarified this to us. Thanks!

Ziro is a town that is located in the Lower Subansiri district of the state of Arunachal Pradesh. The town is said to be one of the most beautiful and pristine towns in the country. The place has a tribal heritage and many of the local population belong to the various tribes in the region. The Apani Tabu tribe is one of the main tribes in the region and the people of this tribe are extremely unique.
A unique feature of the town is the Paddy cum Fish rearing system of the town. This cannot be seen anywhere else in the country. These farms are a must see while travelling to the town of Ziro. The Tarin Fish Farm is also worth the visit and this is located around four km from the town of Hapoli. A hill called the Ziro Puto is located nearby and one can witness an outstanding view of the valley from this vantage point.
There are a few trekking spots that are located near the place as well. The Talley Valley is the main trekking site and it is a hot spot of bio diversity. There is a Shiva Linga that is located at Kardo and this is also a good place to see.

In Hari Village in Ziro Valley, one of the more prosperous villages of the valley has seen transformations in the last 5 years. Traditional bamboo houses have given way to more modern concrete houses. But most of the nature loving Apatanis have retained the traditional feel of the houses yet adapted to the comforts of modernity.
Apatani women carry out the household chores of gathering both wild and kitchen garden vegetables, cooking, fetching water, pounding rice, cleaning houses, washing clothes and utensils, nursing, looking after infants and children, ginning (clothes) and spinning of cotton, and other jobs associated with the household. In the field, the Apatani woman carries out the tasks that include gardening, seeding, transplanting of paddy and millet, weeding of fields, and other activities. At home, the internal family income is controlled by a woman. But the man also has his part of duty in looking after cultivation activities, and acts as the head of family in society.

Bamboo grove right next to the village: In Ziro Valley
The huts of the village adjoining the bamboo grove which is very typical of Apatani villages in the Ziro valley. Modern houses can be now seen in the traditionally tribal villages of Ziro Valley. Apatanis make traditionally houses out of bamboo, which are slightly raised on a platform. But with modern times, they have adapted to the comforts of modernity and gradually shifted from bamboo to concrete.
The fertile land of Ziro gives a incredible yield majorly owing to the progressive techniques of the Apatanis.
The Apatani, or Tanii, are a tribal group of people living in the Ziro valley in the Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh in India. However more Apatanis live outside this valley, making the total population approximately 60,000 all over the state.
