Places to see in ( Dinan - France ) Basilique St Sauveur
The Saint-Sauveur Basilica of Dinan is a religious building dedicated to Roman Catholic worship located in Dinan , France. Only parish church intramural included with the St. Malo church , it is also a place of Marian devotion to Our Lady of Virtues, bas-relief of the xv th century formerly kept at the Couvent des Cordeliers. The object of local veneration, this representation of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary allowed the building to be erected in a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII on May 23, 1954.
The church is located in the French department of Côtes-d'Armor , municipality of Dinan , in the heart of the protected area . It overlooks the Rance . Behind the bedside is the English Garden, former cemetery. According to the legend, Riwallon le Roux would have founded in 1112, on his return from the Holy Land , the priory Saint-Sauveur de Dinan. Taken prisoner during the First Crusade , the knight, grand son of Josselin I st Dinan, son of Olivier I st Dinan and brother of Geoffroy I stof Dinan, would have vowed to build a church dedicated to the Holy Savior and the Holy Trinity if he ever saw his country again.
The church of the 12th century century is the subject of a campaign of important works from 1480: a aisle with a line of chapels is built north of the Romanesque nave; the upper level of the facade is rebuilt. South of the nave, a side aisle was planned but not built; instead, a small chapel with three sides is built at the former location of a door, from 1500. The chevet is completely rebuilt from 1507, under the direction of a master builder named Roland Bougnard. The ambulatory and the radiant chapels are vaulted before 1545, date of the collapse of the bell tower. After this event, we renounce to vault the upper parts of the choir and the transept, begun in 1557. These parts are completed in 1646 by a wood paneling,th century .
Outside, the Romanesque part is exceptional: the western facade is of a very unusual style in Brittany and the south wall seems of Byzantine influence. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin of this architecture, some see a style imported from the Near East to the return of the Crusades, other indirect Byzantine influence through Poitevin monuments Roger Great looks for this second hypothesis. The lower part of the western facade is actually closer to a more widespread Romanesque style in the regions of Poitou and Saintonge in Britain (the upper part rebuilt in the xv th century belongs to the Gothic style). Réné Couffon recalls that some authors compare it to the facade of the church of Saint Nicolas of Civray.
The south wall is very original, the lower part takes the configuration present inside the basilica: double arches separated by buttresses in columns or pilasters joining the terminal cornice (similar structure to that of the school Poitevin). The arches rest on carved capitals (representations of vices and animals). In the upper part, an alternation of windows and concave niches recall a composition of Byzantine style. The cornice rests on a series of carved modillions . The Chapel of St. John located at the third span when the xv th century, it could have been built on the site of an ancient gate between the two pilasters.
The Saint-Sauveur basilica was rebuilt in the xv th century and xvi th century, builders have adopted are the flamboyant Gothic architecture as the Saint-Malo Dinan church whose construction is contemporary with that of the basilica. Given the duration of the works, Renaissance elements were also introduced within the architecture ( bedside tables , credence inside the chapels).
The lateral and radiating chapels are covered with simple vaults except for three of them which are covered with a vault with multiple ribs ( liernes and tiercerons ) and pendulous keys . The keystones are carved in the form of portraits of characters, one of them could represent the veil of Veronique. The credenzas of the radiant chapels are remarkable, they are abundantly carved and represent foliage, characters, the instruments of the Passion , ... That of the axial chapel is bordered by a Renaissance panel (wild and griffin ) inspired by art grotesque very common in the achievements of this era.

What an unexpected gem, we knew the Pyrenees would be great but Cauterets far exceeded our expectations. This is definitely one of those places to put on the todo list.
We stayed at Camping Cabaliros which is about 15 mins walk into Cauterets. A good site but on a slope so some pitches are difficult to get level

Built by Father Philip Ruh who was the most influential architect of Ukrainian Catholic churches in Western Canada. He combined the Byzantine church architecture of Ukraine with the architecture of the great western European cathedrals to build some 40 churches, mostly in Western Canada.
Construction of this church began at the worst time, in 1930, just as the Great Depression was starting. It took 22 years to complete and was built with all volunteer labor and parishioners' donations.
That included 20 boxcars filled with cement and thousands of tonnes of gravel and sand, all of it mixed by hand. Youths were trained to handle saws and levels; men dug the foundation ditches; women hauled rocks; children carried smaller stones, wrote David Butterfield and Maureen Devanik Butterfield in their book, If Walls Could Talk: Manitoba's Best Buildings Explored.
The church construction took on no debt and was built entirely with hand tools. Ruh forbade any power tools, even a cement mixer. It was nearer God that way. A pulley was the only modern machinery used, he told the Winnipeg Free Press at the consecration Sunday July 27, 1952. That opening service lasted five hours.
The grotto next door that Ruh patterned after the famous grotto in Lourdes. Grotto construction began in 1954. It was made with 23,110 bags of cement, 44 tonnes of steel, 6,592 yards of gravel. It wasn't completed until 1970 by the Knights of Columbus, eight years after Ruh died of cancer.
Walking about you notice something odd. You realize the church's exterior brickwork isn't brickwork at all. It's a concrete composite, dabbed with white spots and stenciled over with black lines to make it look like brickwork. This imitation is found inside the church, too. The marble isn't marble but a kind of feathered paintwork to make the wooden arches look like marble. The grotto is concrete that has been shaped to look like the natural stones in Lourdes.
There is at least one central dome on a Ukrainian church, representing Jesus Christ. There can be any number of smaller satellite domes around it. If it is accompanied by two domes, that forms the Holy Trinity; four extra satellite domes represent evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and John; seven domes in total represent the sacraments: baptism, confirmation, holy eucharist, penance, holy orders, marriage, and extreme unction (last rites). The artwork of the church was always to show some evidence of the kingdom of heaven, one priest explained.
Most church's floor plans are cruciform--shaped like a cross laid flat on the ground. The buildings have three chambers with the central chamber the largest and representing the cross piece. Inside the churches, the cross shape is outlined by red carpet that runs up the center aisle.Ruh was a self-taught architect a self-taught Ukrainian. He was born in 1883 in Alsace-Lorraine, then German territory and now in France. He always regarded himself as more German than French, and later in Canada changed his name from Roux to Ruh.
After he was ordained in 1910, the Roman Catholic Church assigned him to Ukraine. He adapted quickly to the Ukrainian language and culture, and remained in the Ukrainian church all his life. He came to Canada in 1913 and began missionary work in northern Alberta. There he began designing and building many small Ukrainian churches. He was also a builder and labourer on the churches, and there are many photos of him pushing a wheelbarrow.
Today, Ruh's grave site is memorialized with a special place of honor, surrounded by spruce trees, in the cemetery next to the Cook's Creek church. His right-hand men in church construction, master builders Mike Sawchuk and Michael Yanchynski, are buried beside him.
