We spend some amazing days in this diving paradise. The Maldives are a must if you are traveling to Sri Lanka (and you can do it Low Cost!). We stayed at the hotel Kaani Village & Spa on the Maafushi island (super cheap compared to the Resorts).

Maafushi Maldives 2017!

After our wedding, we decided to visit the local island of Maafushi in Maldives for a mini honeymoon.

Maafushi is a local island located at the South Male Atoll. It is a local name that means “Big Island” (Maa means “Big” and fushi means “The island”). We decided to stay on a local island this time round as we had already experienced living in Baros Maldives (a luxury resort island) previously and we wanted to try something different.

Maafushi is an idyllic island destination that provides the ideal balance between convenience and lifestyle. It is an easily accessible location that is just a 45-minute speedboat ride away from Male Airport. The first tourist guesthouse on the local island was only built in 2009, and since then more tourist accommodations have been steadily springing up across the island. However, Maafushi is still not overly commercialized (yet), and staying on the rustic island provided interesting insights into the local culture. At the same time, we had loads of fun as there were plenty of beach/sea activities as well as great food.

After reading Velana’s great reviews on TripAdvisor, we decided to stay at this premier boutique hotel even though it charges a slight premium over other hotels. And it was worth every single cent as the room was extremely well-furnished. It had a modern chic decor with a king-sized bed that was super comfy. Water was replenished every day too. It felt great to return to such a pleasant room at the end of a tiring day!

In this video we show Maldives Budget travel to 5 islands.

The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. It’s known for its beaches, blue lagoons and extensive reefs. The capital, Malé, has a busy fish market, restaurants and shops on the main road, Majeedhee Magu, and 17th-century Hukuru Miskiy (also known as Friday Mosque) made of carved white coral.

Maldives snorkeling is a memorable and unique experience. This group of atolls in the Indian Ocean south of India, offer a good destination for a snorkel adventure. But unlike many other locations on this website, where you can visit an island and rent a car, the best ways to visit the Maldives for snorkeling are: to stay at a resort with a good house reef, or book yourself on a snorkeling liveaboard trip, which is difficult to find. We were lucky enough to do both.

The native Maldive anemonefish has black bottom fins. These are common to see snorkeling there.

We were enticed to visit the Maldives years ago by folks telling us they thought it was the best snorkeling in the world. But, because of the distance from the U.S. and cost, we delayed going. We were offered the opportunity to snorkel there by a former snorkel trip partner, and we took it.

As for whether we agree that the Maldives has the best snorkeling in the world, unfortunately, we do not. While at most spots, we did see the most fish we have seen anywhere else, and we saw an amazing array and number of other creatures, the reefs were being severely affected by global warming, and we saw for ourselves a brand new bleaching event in the southern part of the country and at the resort we stayed at in the north. There was a similar event in the northern part of the country in 1998 and other smaller ones since. Time will tell if the dying and dead reefs will continue to support the fish and other creatures. The picture below shows the mix of amazing fish life with a lot of coral bleaching.
