Ma'alot-Tarshiha is a mixed city in the North District in Israel, some 20 kilometres east of Nahariya, about 600 metres above sea level. The city was established in 1963 through a municipal merger of the Arab town of Tarshiha and the Jewish town of Ma'alot. In 2017 the city has a population of 21,267.

In the Biblical account of the battle of the Israelites against the Philistines on Mount Gilboa, the bodies of King Saul and three of his sons were hung on the walls of Beit She'an . In Roman times, Beit She'an was the leading city of the Decapolis. In modern times, Beit She'an serves as a regional center for the settlements in the Beit She'an Valley. The ancient city ruins are now protected within the Beit She'an National Park.
