Crossing the border between Mae Sot, Thailand and Myawaddy, Myanmar and walking over the Friendship Bridge. It's an easy crossing but you have to get your Myanmar visa in Bangkok, Thailand first. There is no visa on arrival for Myanmar.

Welcome to the northern most town in Thailand, Mae Sai. It’s a border market town where you will see hundreds of vendors and people crossing over the border to Myanmar by bus, car or foot. It cost 500 Baht or 10 USD per person, if you want to do it bring your passport. The Thai officials will hold your passport until you return to Thailand.
Here you can find everything from fruits, vegetables, clothing, antiques, toys and even homemade wine. I decided to try a few and they were delicious! If you’re hungry you can find some amazing street food all around the market.
If you decide not to cross into Myanmar, you can always take a picture at the sign marking the northern most point in Thailand. If you are in Chiang Rai it’s a one hour drive north and makes for an easy day trip. I would recommend visiting both Mae Sai and the Golden Triangle on the same day.

If you want to let loose and dance as if no one is watching then Zoe in Yellow is the best place to be in Chiang Mai Old City. This bar and club can be heard before it is seen, as house music is pumped out for an eager, mostly backpacker crowd to dance the night away.
North Gate Jazz Co-Op
North Gate Jazz Co-Op is the premier live jazz bar in Chiang Mai, with an immensely talented roster of live musicians. It is located close to the Chang Puak Gate on the north side of the moat in the Old City. Even though this bar lacks the views and the ambiance of the several Riverside Bars popular with jazz fans, we love North Gate Jazz Co-Op for sticking true to jazz classics and not watering it down pop standards as some places are prone to do in Thailand.
Loi Kroh Chiang Mai Hot Street
Just south of Tha Pae Gate, the short strip leading towards Night Bazaar is a jungle of girlie bars, massage parlours and go-go pubs with their prettiest staff members outside beckoning patrons like sirens. While some have labelled this area a little bit in-your-face, it’s the place to go if you’d like some easy company.
The UN Irish Pub
Irish pubs are a ubiquitous sight in any tourist area, and the Old City in Chiang Mai is no different. I’m confident you know the score by now: oak and brass fittings, hearty pub grub, football on the telly, Guinness on tap – The UN Irish Pub isn’t reinventing the wheel but they are the best at what they do in Chiang Mai.
C.M. Entertainment Complex and Muay Thai Stadium
C.M. Entertainment Complex is an entire warehouse dedicated to adult nightlife – a lot of fun but not the best place to bring your family. Easily spotted by the glowing red neon sign that says “Free Show”, the complex houses some 30 girlie bars with pool tables and loud, throbbing music.
THC Rooftop Bar
If the neon graffiti lining the staircase doesn’t tell you what kind of place this is, then the throbbing drum and bass tunes certainly will! THC Rooftop Bar is extremely popular with backpackers with cushions on the floor, low tables, and a tree-house vibe thanks to lots of bamboo flooring. Partially covered but open-air, the views from the fourth floor rooftop look out over Tha Phae Gate and the moat for a classic Chiang Mai cityscape.
John's Place
Definitely a place to go if you enjoy elevated seating, this rooftop bar is the sort of place you can get stuck in for hours it’s that nice, with the soft breezes and friendly staff. You can either relax, talk and not get drowned out by overbearing music. Enjoy yourself within the spacious social area, good for dancing and meeting people.
Reggae Bars
Considering Chiang Mai is so chilled out it’s not surprising there is a small but lively reggae culture here. For those interested in the Rasta bar scene, the best place to find it is behind Zoe in Yellow bar and club, just off Ratvithi Road in Old City Chiang Mai.
The Writers' Club & Wine Bar
With a décor concept best described as ‘electronic colonial’ The Writers Club & Wine Bar is Chiang Mai’s unofficial press club open to anyone who enjoys good conversation and drinking with Chiang Mai’s media set. There is a constant influx of guests – from British authors to Burmese painters – who ensure a stimulating evening. The Writers Club & Wine Bar is located on Rachadamnoen Road, close to Wat Pan Tao in the centre of the Old City.
Spicy Nightclub
Spicy Nightclub is well known as the last place to close in Chiang Mai. Pumping out dance music late into the night it is loved and hated in equal measure, but if you don’t want to the party to stop this is the place to be. Spicy Nightclub in Chiang Mai is located on the outside of the moat, just north of Tha Phae Gate.

For your ultimate cultural experiences! Mochit Bus Terminal, or the station of Bangkok’s north is the one that covers most distance. It is the largest, the busiest and covers the northern and north-eastern part of Thailand. To get there, get off at the BTS Mochit or MRT Chatuchak Park and take a 10 minute taxi ride to the bus terminal. For your ultimate cultural experience, these buses will take you there!

Our latest travel video adventures had us waking up early in Chiang Mai to board a crammed van en route to Mae Si, Thailand for a Thai Visa run border crossing with Tachilek, Myanmar (Burma). Packed tightly like sardines in this tiny little van - with faulty air conditioning - we set off on a full day trip to receive a new entry stamp back into Thailand. Audrey and I both couldn't believe our full month in Thailand had already expired; it felt just like yesterday that we arrived at Don Muang Airport in Northern Bangkok. Our van was full of other farangs (Thai for foreigners) in a similar predicament. None of us were taking this trip to explore the frontier areas of Northern Thailand/Myanmar. Our mission was quite clear; our Thai visas had expired and we had to all renew them.

If feeling cramped and uncomfortably hot wasn't quite enough to deal with, our driver chipped in with his best efforts to accentuate the situation by driving like a kamikaze pilot on a suicide mission. We were both beyond relieved when we finally arrived at Mae Sai to cross the border over to Tachilek, Myanmar.
The process was easy as pie. I really wish all immigration procedures were this simple and efficient. After receiving our exit stamp on the Thai side we entered Myanmar immigration where we paid 500 Baht, had our photos taken and were given a temporary ID card that allowed us to roam around in this Burmese border town.
Having only one hour to complete this entire process we were rushed for time and only briefly had the opportunity to explore Burma. Touts and aggressive street vendors tried to peddle us cartons of cigarettes and Viagra. Although, I'm no longer a wet behind the ears backpacker, I hope I'm not at the stage where it appears I need a libido booster :P
Without time to have a proper sit down meal, I randomly bought some deep fried snacks from a Burmese street food vendor with limited English and/or Thai. Luckily, it only came to 10 Baht (roughly 0.33 USD).
Once we crossed the border back into Thailand we literally had only 15 minutes to grab a bite to eat. We quickly found the closest Thai restaurants which had wifi. Mistaking when my team (the Chicago Blackhawks) played in the Stanley Cup finals we were on the bus when they were taking on the Boston Bruins. With more excitement that a child ready to open a birthday present on Christmas, I rushed to check the score. Sweat dripped from my eyebrow as I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach. As the page slowly loaded an image of a celebrating Blackhawk flooded the screen. I leaped up off of my seat and did a fist pump in the air. They won the game!
On the entire ride back to Chiang Mai I was over the moon. I was excited my team won I hardly even noticed how crazy things were on the road:
