I was driving around the streets of Thanjavur city. A very pleasant experience as the streets are filled with temples, a variety of different people and some historic structures. This driving video has both day and night time views. Also in some areas it is crowded and in other areas, it is totally deserted. At the end, I've added the outskirts of Thanjavur, where it is full of farmlands.
Some of the key attractions in Thanjavur are the Brihadeeswarar temple, Thanjavur Palace and Raja Raja cholan manimandapam.

Old India in 1913. Religious ceremonies Pondicherry
From an old French coloured film showing religious customs and ceremonies in Mailam in South India 30 km from Pondicherry. See my other clips on old India.
A viewer reports: This video looks like Maasi Magam Festival being celebrated in Pondicherry in the Tamil month of Maasi (probably 15 February to 14 of March) seashore every year. Urchavar Idols from the shrines around Pondicherry are gathered on the Vaithikuppam beach for Kadal Theerthavaari. People from villages and towns have come together to workship God, the special idols are Mailam Murugan, Tindivanam Ranganathar & Theevanur Pillayar

A walk through Madurai town - TamilNadu - South India
Madurai is one of the oldest cities of India, with a history dating all the way back to the Sangam period of the pre Christian era. The glory of Madurai returned in a diminished form in the earlier part of this millennium; it later on came under the rule of the Vijayanagar kingdom after its ransack by the ravaging armies of Delhi (Malik Kafur). During the 16th and 18th centuries, Madurai was ruled by the Nayak Emperors, the foremost of whom was Tirumalai Nayakar. The Sangam period poet Nakkeerar is associated with some of the Tiruvilayaadal episodes of Sundareswarar - that are enacted as a part of temple festival traditions even today.
The Sangam age or the Golden age of Tamil literature -- produced masterpieces way back in the Pre christian era and in early 1st millennium . Madurai was the seat of the Tamil Sangam or Academy of learning. The entire city of Madurai, is built around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple -- the temple par excellence. Concentric rectangular streets surround the temple, symbolizing the structure of the cosmos.
Many people come to Madurai to visit the famous Meenakshi Temple and the Jallikattu but the real high points of Madurai life you will find on the countryside and around the temple in the city.
