Northern Coromandel Tour with Coromandel Adventures – New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year
Day 6: Taking a Northern Coromandel Tour with Coromandel Adventures is today’s stunning activity on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year. Join us in the Northern Coromandel Peninsula!
Yesterday - Day 5 -
Tomorrow – Day 7 –
About this video:
Day 6’s activity of New Zealand Biggest Gap Year is with Coromandel Adventures. We join Coromandel Adventures for a day tour of the Northern Coromandel as part of a Northern Coromandel Sunset Tour. Despite the disastrous weather of yesterday’s activity it turns out to be a stunning day as we drive north on the Coromandel Peninsula of New Zealand. Willie, our Coromandel Adventures tour guide, shows us the hidden gems of the Coromandel, from the Muriwai Coastal Track to the beautiful Fletchers Bay.
Since we left our campervan at the Coromandel Top 10 Holiday Park, we are grateful to be able to venture down the gruelling winding roads of the Northern Coromandel Peninsula with Coromandel Adventures. Otherwise, our campervan just wouldn’t make a trip like this! On the way back, we find out why this tour is described as a “Sunset Tour” with awesome views across the Coromandel Peninsula at sunset.

The 309 Road in the Coromandel – New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 7: Today, we take the 309 Road in the Coromandel seeing Waiau Falls and arriving in Whitianga for some classic New Zealand fish and chips!
Yesterday - Day 6 -
Tomorrow – Day 8 –
About this video:
It’s Day 7 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year and a whole week since we started our challenge of 365 activities in 365 days in New Zealand. Today’s activity is a road trip on The 309 Road in the Coromandel. Along the way, we stop off at Waiau Falls, a stunning waterfall just off the side of the 309 Road among beautiful forest scenery. The trip takes us on a winding gravel road through the stunning valleys as we travel from the west coast of the Coromandel to the east coast.
We arrive in the Coromandel town of Whitianga where we treat ourselves to a classic New Zealand meal: fish and chips! We take them down to the Whitianga waterfront, but little do we know that we are being followed... Someone, or something, is after our fish and chips!
After the fish and chips incident, we check out the relaxing Whitianga Beach for a taste of coastal life on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Hot Water Beach, Coromandel Peninsula, New Zealand
Hot Water Beach is internationally renown for beautiful scenery and unique geothermal activity. Voted one of the world's top ten beaches by Lonely Planet, come visit, bring a spade, arrive 2 hours before low tide and start digging your own thermal hot pool.
Where the thermal hot water bubbles up through the sand (just above the low tide mark) it's boiling hot, be careful, the trick is getting the right balance of hot and cold water in your pool.
Relax and enjoy it until the tide comes in and cold ocean water crashes over your pool and sends you home.
A unique kiwi experience in the Coromandel. This was filmed on a long weekend (Labour day) and shows how busy the geothermal section of the beach can get. Visit mid-week or in the off season (winter) and you may get it all to yourself!
Filmed with GoPro 3+ Black on a TBS Discovery Pro drone.
