Nepal नेपाल the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal सङ्घीय लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्र नेपाल is a landlocked central Himalayan country in South Asia. Nepal is divided into 7 states and 75 districts and 744 local units including 4 metropolises, 13 sub-metropolises, 246 municipal councils and 481 villages. It has a population of 26.4 million and is the 93rd largest country by area. Bordering China in the north and India in the south, east, and west, it is the largest sovereign Himalayan state. Nepal does not border Bangladesh, which is located within only 27 km (17 mi) of its southeastern tip. Neither does it border Bhutan due to the Indian state of Sikkim being located in between. Nepal has a diverse geography, including fertile plains, subalpine forested hills, and eight of the world's ten tallest mountains, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. Kathmandu is the nation's capital and largest city. It is a multiethnic nation with Nepali as the official language.
The territory of Nepal has a recorded history since the Neolithic age. The name Nepal is first recorded in texts from the Vedic Age, the era which founded Hinduism, the predominant religion of the country. In the middle of the first millennium BCE, Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in southern Nepal. Parts of northern Nepal were intertwined with the culture of Tibet. The Kathmandu Valley in central Nepal became known as Nepal proper because of its complex urban civilisation. It was the seat of the prosperous Newar confederacy known as Nepal Mandala. The Himalayan branch of the ancient Silk Road was dominated by the valley's traders. The cosmopolitan region developed distinct traditional art and architecture. By the 18th century, the Gorkha Kingdom achieved the unification of Nepal. The Shah dynasty established the Kingdom of Nepal and later formed an alliance with the British Empire, under its Rana dynasty of premiers. The country was never colonised but served as a buffer state between Imperial China and Colonial India. In the 20th century, Nepal ended its isolation and forged strong ties with regional powers. Parliamentary democracy was introduced in 1951, but was twice suspended by Nepalese monarchs in 1960 and 2005. The Nepalese Civil War resulted in the proclamation of a republic in 2008, ending the reign of the world's last Hindu monarchy.
Modern Nepal is a federal secular parliamentary republic. It has seven states. Nepal is a developing nation, ranking 144th on the Human Development Index (HDI) in 2016. The country struggles with the transition from a monarchy to a republic. It also suffers from high levels of hunger and poverty. Despite these challenges, Nepal is making steady progress, with the government declaring its commitment to elevate the nation from least developed country status by 2022. Nepal also has a vast potential to generate hydropower for export.
Nepal's foreign relations expanded after the Anglo-Nepal Treaty of 1923, which was recognised by the League of Nations. After a Soviet veto in 1949, Nepal was admitted to the United Nations in 1955. Friendship treaties were signed with the Dominion of India in 1950 and the People's Republic of China in 1960. Nepal hosts the permanent secretariat of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), of which it is a founding member. Nepal is also a member of the Non Aligned Movement and the Bay of Bengal Initiative. The military of Nepal is the fifth largest in South Asia and is notable for its Gurkha history, particularly during the world wars, and has been a significant contributor to United Nations peacekeeping operations.

Lepchajagat is a small village located 19kms away from Darjeeling town. The word 'Jagat' actually means the world', so it was the world of the Lepchas. It's all about dense forested area full with pines, oaks and rhododendrons.
Some nearby sightseeing areas:
1) Ghoom Station: This is the highest point of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway from where the Toy Train starts its descend towards Darjeeling town.
2) Ghoom Monastery.
3) Batasia Loop: Batasia means airy space. the As you stand on one side of the garden and see the toy train making a complete loop while hooting its whistle along the way and trying to negotiate the spiral track with a double loop, it's a fabulous experience.
There is no better place to get a 360 degree view of Darjeeling's landscape including the hill town and the snow covered peaks of the Eastern Himalayas with the majestic Kanchenjunga on one side. And all this from the middle of a lovely flowering garden around which the toy train track is laid.
Batasia Loop was commissioned in 1919 because it was an engineering requirement for the toy train to be able to handle a steep gradient. Just after Ghoom (which is the highest railway station) there is a sharp fall as the toy train moves towards Darjeeling. There was no way the toy train could negotiate such a drastic fall of about 140ft unless there was a way to somehow reduce the gradient of the slope.
There is also an Eco Garden in Batasia. It provides a lot of information about organic farming and plantations in Darjeeling. Here you will find many rare species of plants like the Gingko biloba. And there are Rhododendrons, Silver Firs and even tea plants.
At the center of the Batasia Loop is the War Memorial. This was opened in 1995 to commemorate the Gorkha soldiers of the Darjeeling Hills who sacrificed their lives in various wars after India's independence. At an elevated platform there is a Cenotaph and a statue of a soldier paying homage.
4) Sukhia Pokhri: Sukhiapokhri is near Nepal's eastern border with India at Ilam District, Mechi Zone. There is a crossing to Pashupatinagar town with a Nepal customs checkpoint. From Sukhiapokhri one can go to different tea gardens and other small towns or villages in the area. Jorepokhri is the home of the Himalayan salamander.
5) Jorpokhri: 'Jor' means two and 'pokhri' stands for a lake or water tank. The boundary of natural lake has been concretized with seating arrangements so that the visitors can enjoy the water area. There is a huge model of a snake and a fountain in the middle of the tank. In the water tanks you might be able to see the rare Himalayan Salamanders that are small lizard like amphibians.
6) Mirik Lake: The most prominent place in Mirik, The Sumendu Lake is beautiful, calm and yet invigorating. The lake also has an 80 foot bridge running over it for people who don't wish to walk around it.
Boating in the lake and a pony ride on the lakeside are exhilarating experiences. Also, the strategic advantage of the lake is that it is nearly walking distance to every place in the town.
7) Pashupati – It is a Nepalese town on Indo-Nepal border just 15 km or 30 minutes drive away from Lepchajagat. India tourists are allowed to go inside Nepal for shopping etc after making entry at the border check post, Indian tourist vehicles are not allowed to go inside, so you have to hire a local cab if you want to go the local market on the Nepalese side.Sukiapokhari or Sukeypokhari is the nearest town, it is just a 4 km walk away through beautiful conifer forest of pine, oak, maple, and chestnut. Though Sukiapokhari does not have much attraction on its own for tourists, you may visit Jorepokhari about a km from the town here. This used to be a natural lake where rare Salamander could be seen, now the entire lake is cemented and decorated, a Shiva temple has also been constructed nearby, there is also tourist accommodation here. The place is very peaceful and offers nice views of the mountains around.Darjeeling town being just 30 minutes drive (15 km) from Lepchajagat, you may stay here and enjoy all the tourist attractions of Darjeeling town as well. Also, Mirik town is 30 km or about 45 minutes drive away. One can go to Mirik for a day trip and enjoy boating at Lake Samendu there.
HOW TO REACH LEPCHAJAGAT:
You can get pre-paid taxis from NJP or Bagdogra for Lepchajagat. It takes about 3 hours to reach from NJP/Bagdogra (by the normal route - Hill Cart Road via Ghoom). Alternatively you will also get shared jeeps from NJP and Siliguri to Ghoom. From there take another shared jeep which will drop you near the lodge at the main road.
