Medan, Indonesia In 3 Minutes
Again, another short escape over the weekend (18 to 20 Nov 2016) and this time, I went to Medan, Indonesia. Medan is located in North Sumatra & it is the 3rd largest city after Jakarta & Surabaya. Arrived on Friday late evening and didn't manage to get any clips. The next day, woke up at 05:00 hours as a driver to pick us up at 06:30 hours to start our tour to Taman Simalen Resort. Enroute to the resort, first stop was at the Lumbini Natural Park where you can see the replica of Shwedagon Pagoda in Myanmmar. It only opens at 09:00 hours and we were there 1 hour earlier so only able to snap some photos from the entrance. Taman Simalen Resort was 3 hours away and the main attraction was the Lake Toba. The locals called it Danau Toba. It's a large natural lake occupying the caldera of a supervolcano. The lake is about 100 kilometres long, 30 kilometres wide, and up to 505 metres (1,666 ft) deep & surface elevation of 900 metres. The sight was magnificent ( but it will be good if it wasn't that cloudy)! The best view in the resort to view the lake is to head to One Tree Hill as it is the highest viewing point in the resort.
After that it was lunch time & left Taman Simalem Resort to Sipisopiso Waterfall (about 1 hour drive) Due to time constraints, it was see, snap and shoot . After that another 90 minutes drive to Berastagi Fruit Market. You see lots of colourful fruits and vegetables that are locally farmed ( and for export too ) I am not sure if you notice those bright orange carrots as I'm pretty sure the ones I see back in Singapore aren't in such bright colors! Free sampling are available at most of the stalls & I must say the passion fruit was the best! Though it look pale but it tasted sweet (and cheap too!)
Later on another few hours on the MPV back to Medan city. It was pretty late and I was (very hungry). I managed to get some where to eat tips for local food which is in Brastagi Mall ( thanks to Christina) There is a supermarket in the mall and next to it a food court which serves local food. The food court called Kedai Pojok. For all the food clips you see, it cost only SGD 17.00 which was pretty cheap.
Lastly, the must do and eat in Medan is Ucok Durian ; it is a restaurant but they serve only DURIANS! Durian is a thorny husk like fruit and once opened, some likened the smell of the fruits as overnight socks with fouling cheese smell but I personally loved it a lot as it tastes sweet and creamy. Whether you like it or not, this is a must place to visit and must eat when you are in Medan. The locals paid about SGD 3.00 onwards per fruit ; I've paid mine for SGD 4.00 which was pretty reasonable (and cheap too!)
Also thanks for Charlene ( the girl in red sweater ) for getting the private driver in this trip , also to Christina for her foodie tips in Medan - terima kasih ( it means thank you in Indonesian) !

5 Best Places to Visit in INDONESIA : Bromo National Park - Lombok Island - Komodo National Park - Yogyakarta - Bali Island
With 18,330 islands, 6,000 of them inhabited, Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. Indonesia is home to 167 active volcanoes, far more than any other country.
Hardly surprisingly in the world’s largest archipelago, beaches are also a major draw. Aside from the obvious like Bali and Lombok, there are many other wonderful beaches in off-the-beaten-track locations.

SUMATRA - how to travel Indonesia? (Mentawai Islands, Bukit Lawang, Medan etc.)
How to travel Indonesia? Indonesia has 17.508 islands you could possibly visit: Bali, Java, Kalimantan, Lombok, Komodo or Sumatra.
We travelled Sumatra and had a spectacular time here.
Let's start with some quick facts about Sumatra. First of all, Sumatra is a big island. Whatever you plan to cover on your trip, you will realize fast that it is hard to see all the highlights of Sumatra. We had to skip a lot. It's not only that the island itself is so big, it is also hard to get around. Compared to other countries in Southeast Asia we think that Indonesia is one of the countries which makes it a little bit harder to get around. There are not many tourist busses like in Thailand or Cambodia (and no open bus tickets like in Vietnam). This is also nice as you will definitely meet and travel with locals. On the other hand it was really hard sometimes to find the right bus terminal and not to end up being scammed. Another quick fact about Sumatra: this island was quite touristy for a while, like 20 years ago, but it is not anymore. There are some main spots like Lake Toba or Bukit Lawang for example. But at places like Bukittinggi, Harau Valley, Lake Maninjau you can be pretty much alone - not seeing (m)any other tourists.
As I said it is hard to cover all the main spots of Sumatra. Here is a list of the places we went to:
1. Medan: huge city, 2 Million people are living here, we tried to leave as quick as possible.
2. Bukit Lawang: The main spot to go. Here you can hike through the jungle spotting wild Orangutans and other species.
3. Bukittinggi: nice small town - not many tourists.
4. Lake Maninjau: a place to relax, swim in the lake, eat some fresh fish or try other Indonesian food.
5. Harau Valley: rock formations, waterfalls and rice fields. Here you can wake up in your guesthouse next to a huge rock, having beakfast on the balcony.
6. Padang: bigger, smelly city, nice hotels, restaurants and malls.
7. Mentawai Islands: beautiful islands, perfect for snorkeling and surfing, really hard to get here on you own, jungle trekking to meet the tribe people.
