DISCOVER LAKE ORTA | Best places to visit

Among the corners of Piedmont of the most exciting poem, Lake Orta is certainly the most romantic mirror of water in Italy. Set between rolling hills and green mountains, it stretches from north to south, from the slopes of Mottarone to the extreme north of the Novara plain. Framed by a handful of picturesque villages, some of which leaned along its banks, others higher up on the heights. The village of Orta is indisputably the pearl, overlooking the island of San Giulio dominated by the Benedictine abbey and not by chance defined the island of silence.

Tra gli angoli di Piemonte di più emozionante poesia, il Lago d'Orta è sicuramente lo specchio d'acqua più romantico d'Italia. Incastonato tra dolci colline e il verde dei monti, si allunga da nord a sud, dalle pendici del Mottarone all'estremo nord della pianura novarese. Gli fanno da cornice una manciata di pittoreschi borghi, di cui alcuni appoggiati lungo le sue sponde, altri più in alto, sulle alture. Il borgo di Orta è indiscutibilmente la perla, affacciato sull'isola di San Giulio dominata dall'abbazia benedettina e non a caso definito l'isola del silenzio.

We had the amazing opportunity to stay in Stresa, Northern Italy, on Lake Maggiore at the beautiful Hotel Villa e Palazzo Aminta. One of the most luxurious hotels in Northern italy, we take you on a full tour of the hotel including our Junior Suite. The hotel also has a pool area, two restaurants, a bar, a beautiful lobby and an amazing spa. We had an incredible view from our room of the islands in Stresa, including Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori and Isola Madre.

Hotel Villa e Palazzo Aminta:
Set on the shores of Lake Maggiore, Villa e Palazzo Aminta offers a luxurious wellness centre, a private beach, and an outdoor heated swimming pool overlooking the Borromean Islands. Parking is free, and there is also a private pier. Villa e Palazzo Aminta Hotel is a 10-minute walk from Stresa. A free shuttle to the town centre is available.

Part of the Leading Hotels of the World, the Aminta has a bar open all day. Drinks and snacks are served out on the sun terrace or by the pool. The Le Isole restaurant serves gourmet cuisine, and Italian dishes can be enjoyed at the I Mori restaurant.

Stresa:
Stresa is a town and comune of about 5,000 residents on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, about 90 kilometres (56 mi) northwest of Milan. It is situated on road and rail routes to the Simplon Pass.

Main sights at Stresa
Villa Ducale, commissioned by Giacomo Filippo Bolongaro and dating from about 1770. In 1848 the villa passed to the Italian philosopher Antonio Rosmini-Serbati and today it houses the International Centre for Rosminian Studies.

Villa Dell'Orto, built in 1900. It was commissioned by the painter Liberto Dell'Orto and designed by Boffi.

The large Villa Pallavicino, between Stresa and Belgirate. It was the inspiration of Ruggero Bonghi in the 1850s and now is the site of a zoological park.

Lake Como, Italy

There are five major lakes in the Italian lake district.  From west to east they are Lakes Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Iseo and Garda.  Each has its own particular character.

We were spoilt for choice so we had to do a bit of research when trying to decide on which one to stay at.  Do we stay put and travel around as many as possible on day trips, or stay a night or two at different lakes?

We decided to stay put at Lake Como which is the third largest lake in Italy after Lake Garda and Maggiore.  It covers 146 square km and over 400 metres deep.

It offered a bit of everything that we wanted, pretty towns and villages perched on the water's edge.  A backdrop of mountains and historic buildings.  Most of all, stunning scenery with great walking tracks.

Lake Maggiore, Itlay

We were staying 4 nights at Lake Como so we had an opportunity to travel to Italy's 2nd largest Lake, Lake Maggiore. Our more indirect route took us through Switzerland twice but we didn't mind.....it is such a novelty to travel through different countries just on a day outing.
