How Locals Do Tapas in Spain on Travel with Kate
Tapas and Spain go together like baguettes and France. As promised here is my first episode from Sevilla, Spain chasing my passions and my storybook vacation with Expedia. In this video, a local, David Ciudad of the website Notjustatourist.com, showed me a couple of his most beloved restaurants in the Triana neighborhood of Sevilla.
Triana is a bustling part of town that is markedly different from the rest of the city. The concentration of historic architecture and manicured gardens found across the river in Sevilla are replaced here by a vibrant local scene. Triana has it's own festivals and is a hub of Flamenco culture. In fact, many who live in Triana identify as Trianeros rather than Sevillians.
Whether in Triana, in Sevilla-proper or Spain at large, I find that eating tapas is a really fun and social way to dine. Often in bars like we visited in the video you have the option to stay standing while eating or you can find a seat. Tapas are best enjoyed by sharing and trying as many tastes as you can. With all the flavors, I tend to feel more satisfied after a meal of tapas than if I do with regularly coursed meals. All that variety makes for a special experience.

Luang Prabang is an amazing historical city in Laos, and it also happens to be an amazing city for food. You’ll find an array of incredible Lao food to experience.
Morning Market - One of the best places to get started eating Lao street food in Luang Prabang is the morning market. It’s low-key, relaxing, the vendors are incredibly friendly, and there’s so much delicious food to try. From wild grilled beehive to khao piak sen noodles, the food is so good, it’s hard to ever go anywhere else when you’re in Luang Prabang. The food highlight for me was the grilled honey comb, since it was so rare and unique. Additionally, you’ll have a blast checking out all the ingredient at the market. Here’s what I ate:
Grilled beehive - 5,000 LAK ($0.60)
Mung bean cake - 5,000 LAK ($0.60) for 2
Naem
Khao gee - 5,000 LAK ($0.60) for 3
Noodle rolls - 10,000 LAK ($1.20
Khao piak sen - 15,000 LAK ($1.80) per bowl
Phosi Market - One of the biggest markets in Luang Prabang is Phosi Market. Unfortunately there wasn’t much pre-cooked food when we went there in the middle of the day, but luckily we found some amazing food.
Sai oua - Sai oua is the northern Laos version of sausage, and it’s a life-changer. This stall served some of the best sausage, not only that I’ve had in Laos, but in the world. You’ll find sai oua all over Luang Prabang. Price - 10,000 LAK ($1.20) each
Sticky rice feast - I desperately wanted a Luang Prabang sticky rice meal for lunch, so eventually after walking around a little we found the perfect spot. She had a variety of different Lao food stews to choose from and they all look great. All the dishes were delicious, but the best Lao food of the meal for me was the bowl of aw bon (or bon) - made from taro leaves.
Total price - 40,000 LAK ($4.79)
Finally, for dinner to finish off this Luang Prabang street food tour, we headed to the evening market, located perpendicular to the night market walking street. We ordered a Mekong fish and then some very interesting Lao dishes from the curry stall. The algae salad was particularly interesting and delicious.
Fish - 80,000 LAK ($9.58), farmed fish were considerably cheaper
Dinner total - 60,000 LAK ($7.18)
It was an amazing day exploring Lao street food in Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang is a food paradise.

Tapas in Barcelona
We bring you to several excellent tapas bars in the heart of Barcelona and show you the routine: Go right up to the food counter and help yourself to items that look delicious, order your drinks then sit down and enjoy. After several rounds of these delicious little tastes the waiter will come by and count the toothpicks to determine how many items you ate, and collect your money on the spot. Quick, delicious and not expensive, tapas are very satisfying because you are in control, selecting from a wide variety lined up at the bar. In some bars you point to items and the waiter will serve you, in others it is self-service. Tapas fit beautifully into the Spanish life-style because they eat dinner very late, usually after 9:00pm, so they are getting hungry in the late afternoon, and thirsty as well, plus they want to talk and socialize. Tapas are the perfect ingredient to bring all those Spanish elements together. Found throughout Spain, the wide variety of tapas in Barcelona are among the best.
