Old Homestead Site and Cemetery in North Carolina (Goldmine Loop Trail)
Take a journey with me as I explore along the Goldmine Loop Trail and surrounding wilderness in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. The Goldmine Loop Trail was once part of a community during the 1800’s and early 1900’s known as Goldmine Branch. It was a logging and farming community closely tied to the nearby community of Forney Creek. Many of these places were abandoned in the 1930’s and 40’s with the construction of Fontana Dam. Traces from the past still remain today in this wilderness such as old homestead sites and cemeteries. As always all artifacts and remaining history was left undisturbed during my visit. Please be respectful of the sites when visiting.
Dymond City Road, NC - Haunted Roads and Bridges
Dymond City, North Carolina is now a ghost town with little reminder of what once was. All that remains is a long dirt road that once led into the town. Where buildings from a bygone era once stood, now nature has come back to reclaim the land. Visitors to this area report seeing strange lights among the trees, the spirit of a possessed little girl, and a red devil-like figure that serves as a bad omen to all who witness him. Jeff and Linda venture along this dark stretch of road in an effort to find evidence of the ghostly sightings.

Rock Jock Trail, Linville Gorge Wilderness, NC
For our second hike in the Linville Gorge Wilderness we drove down to the Conley Cove Trailhead and planned on doing the northern half of the Rock Jock Trail, hitting the highlights. We skipped the side trails to Lost Dog and started with Fern Point. Next up was Hacker Point, where we first spotted highliners across the gorge on The Chimneys. The southern cliff of Hacker Point, a couple hundred feet south of the labeled point, I think has better views. It is the first wide open view south and provided great views of climbers on Blue Jay Point. Diving into Blue Jay Canyon the trail is a mess around the curve with some big blowdowns but less than two weeks after we hiked here the big dead hemlocks were cleared.
We skipped Blue Jay Point and headed for our turnaround location, the side trail to Zen and Razor Points. We took a nice break on Razor Point, which is mostly covered with small pines providing good shade. I think I stared too long at Razor's Edge so I had to check out the approach. From above, the monolithic rock looks narrow and slanted, but it turns out the toughest scrambling was descending the notch that cannot be seen from above. I included a picture of the top end of the notch. The long, slanted rocks were tricky going down and up. My friend passed on this trip, so he watched me from above getting pics and video. His phone is much older than mine, so his picture and video quality were not as good. Razor's Edge is an awesome rock formation with huge vertical drops. Even more impressive were the walls of Zen Canyon and Razor's Edge Canyon on either side. It looked like they were easily 500+ feet high on all sides. Unfortunately, I left my almost brand new hat on the rock and didn't realize it until I made it back to the trail. Oh well, otherwise it was a great day being the LG tour guide for my hiking buddy.
Hike was 4.4 miles with 2,018 feet elevation gain in 3 hours and 10 minutes.
